Today, my goal is to buy a new hair dryer for the salon.

I was checking prices and specs online when I realized that “there are like, a million different types of hair dryers out there.” I feel like it’s good to know the correct terms and how to choose the best of the best hair dryers, so I want to pass this info on to you.

So here is a bit of hair dryer terminology for your pleasure…

There are Three Types of Hair Dryer Coils:

Ceramic vs tourmaline? Do you know what all the hair dryer terminology means?

  • Metal coils are the most typical and were most commonly used in the past. They are cheap but not favorable since they do not heat your hair evenly.
  • Ceramic coils are a preferred choice since they have the ability to heat your hair quickly and evenly, which cuts down the blow-dry time and reduces the damage that comes with blow-drying.
  • Tourmaline coils are made from a precious stone. This is why they are generally the most expensive. The stone emits large numbers of negatively charged ions, which cuts down on frizz and static. The water breaks down quickly with the tourmaline, which makes hair absorb hair products more efficiently, leaving the hair feeling soft and sleek.

The Best Hair Dryers Are Ionic

Ionic hair dryers shoot out negatively charged ions (similar to tourmaline). It leaves the hair free of frizz and static and cuts down on blow-dry time. Negative ions neutralize the charge in the hair that would normally cause static.

Nozzle Attachment

In my opinion, all of the best hair dryers will have a nozzle attachment. I recently started using one and it’s pretty awesome. It’s a good attachment to use while straightening your hair with a hair dryer, as it will promote faster dry time, and smoother, frizz-free hair. Furthermore, it works by focusing the air stream where you need it.

How To Use Hair Dryer Attachments

Finger Diffuser

The purpose of this attachment is to aid with the styling of curly hair. To use a finger diffuser, place it on your scalp and move it around with a circular motion until your hair is dry. This helps distribute heat evenly all over the entire head and encourages shine. Best of all, it will define your curls and cut down frizz.

Comb-Pick Attachment

These are similar to the nozzle attachments but have a comb built into it. You can use it for different styling abilities and use the pick to “pick up the hair,” which creates volume.
