Maybe you have some suspicions about your hair type, but don’t know for sure if it’s fine or not. How ever will you know the truth?
Well, my friend, there’s a super easy trick that will tell you exactly if you have fine hair and here it is:
- Pull a strand of hair from your head.
- Place it between your index finger and thumb.
- If you can feel your hair between your fingers, it’s medium or coarse. If you can’t feel anything, you have fine hair.
You can also use common sense and judgment to tell if you’re hair is fine. For example, I can only use a tiny bit of hair product before my fine hair gets too oily. If you have the same problem, you likely have fine hair as well.
How To Choose The Best Flat Iron For Fine Hair
So let’s quickly go over some hair science.
Fine hair refers to the diameter of your hair, not the density. It’s entirely possible to have a lot of hair and still have fine hair.
Fine hair has a very small diameter and is typically missing the innermost layer (called the medulla). Because it’s smaller and weaker than other hair textures, it’s more susceptible to breakage and also responds more quickly to heat.
It’s imperative that you take extra care to protect fine hair when straightening it.
Temperature
Since fine hair responds quicker to heat than other textures, you should use a lower heat setting. This helps protect it from breakage and preserves the natural moisture in the hair.
You should go with the lowest setting possible, but it’s safe to go up to 300° F with fine hair.
Material
The materials that the flat iron is made of is super important when choosing the best flat iron for fine hair.
Materials like gold and titanium are designed to get really hot, and really hot should be avoided with fine hair.
On the other hand, ceramic is the preferred material for fine hair. It heats evenly, preserves moisture and emits negative ions to smooth the hair. It also styles the hair at lower temperatures, which we already know is crucial.
