Hi there. I'm Megan Graham, and this is Megan, Graham Beauty at Home.. So today I wanted to talk to you about the best hair color for older women., So this may not apply to all of you, but I deal with it on a day-to-day basis. At my hair salon in Boston Massachusetts., And I think it's a really important topic., So I've been a hair colorist for 20 years and I do my job even when I'm just walking around.. I could be at the gym on the treadmill and I see someone walk by and I can't help but look at people and just make them over in my head. And it's not because I'm trying to be critical of them. But it's my job at my work to bring out everybody's inner beauty and make every woman every person look the best that they can look.. So I think what a lot of women do is they choose a hair color when they're 18 and they just keep buying that same color and using that same color and thinking that it works just as well at 60 as when they were 18.. But the thing that you really have to remember is that your skin is constantly changing. And what you really want to do is to bring out the absolute best in your skin and to really subdue the flaws.. So it doesn't mean that you're trying to look like someone completely different.. It just means that you're doing whatever gives you a little bit more of a glow and a little bit more of a healthy look.. I have a little dog walking right by me.. Come here. Poppy would you like to say hello Poppy just wants to say hello, and then she wants to get out of the frame. Anyway.. So basically, the color that you had when you were say, 18 years old, is almost always going to be a little bit darker than what works for you when you're 45 years old, 50 years old, even your skin, starts changing at 30 years old.. I know it's hard to imagine, but I would say that that's when we really start to notice the signs of aging.. First of all, I just wan na say: there's absolutely nothing wrong with aging and I'm not trying to devalue anybody. That'S older., I mean I'm 43 and I just work with everything that I have and I always work on taking care of myself and looking my absolute best.. So this is really about accentuating your natural beauty and working with what you have.. So for me, when I think about the best hair color for older women, I always think that a little bit of softness behooves almost everyone.. So for me, when I'm in the salon, I find that almost every client looks better with slightly lighter hair.. Now the thing to remember is that when I say slightly, lighter, probably not more than two levels lighter than what's naturally growing out of their head.. So if you're a dark brown, you might just look better as a medium brown or even a light. Brown.. I'M not saying you have to go blonde, because actually that could have the opposite effect and it could actually make you look older and it could take away your natural glow.. So for me, I find that almost every woman, as she ages looks better with just a little bit more warmth and a slightly softer color than she had as an 18 year old.. So I do think that there's a lot of pushback and I see a lot of brunettes that are trying to hang on to super super dark hair color.. But when an older woman that has more mature skin wears darker color, what actually happens is she's bringing all of the flaws forward in her skin.. So if there's anything wrong, if you have a blemish, if you have maybe some pigmentation for the sun or something like that by putting really dark color against your face, everything looks a little bit worse., It's really interesting.. So I often times a very, very popular service that I offer is a color correction where women come in and they have dark hair and I just bring their hair, maybe to a light brown or something like that., And it's so amazing the compliments that they get. How much better they look just when they walk out of the salon because they are glowing.. Their skin looks like they just applied fresh makeup, but it's really just that the color suits them.. So I think something really important to remember, as your skin matures a little bit is that bringing a little bit of softness bringing a little bit of warmth. And also besides the color, just spending a little bit of extra time. To give that moisture. Back to your hair and that shine. Those are the beautiful things that will work out so well with a hair color.. I myself am known for being a very natural hair colorist.. So I can't say I'm someone that specializes in super crazy hair transformations and things like that., A lot of clients that come to me are looking for something that looks like it's growing out of their own head.. So anyway, I just wanted to bring you a little of my thoughts, a little of my wisdom on what color works for older women.. But my general rule of thumb is that almost every client looks slightly better, lighter instead of darker.. The opposite could be true. If you're 20 years old., But when you're over 35, going just a little bit lighter, is more gentle on you and it really just brings some life to your skin tone.. So, thank you so much for following along. And also thank you so much for bearing with me as I get my sort of like my practice in on YouTube.. I have not done YouTube forever and I think that it's felt a little bit like a first date.. So, every single day I get a little bit more comfortable talking to you guys.. I really look forward to all of your comments.. I look forward to any of your questions. And below my video. If you can hit like and subscribe and just give me any of your comments, I would appreciate that so much.. My goal is to reach 1000 followers. And if you can help me reach that goal, I would be so incredibly excited.. I am doing all of this. During the coronavirus and just getting my creative juices flowing., So thank you so much and stay healthy and stay beautiful.

Terrie Johnston: Hi Megan. You have a natural "Warm Presence" in front of a camera. And i found the info. you shared very helpful.

Nikki Stalling: So nice of you to advise everyone at every age! Its a misconception that only youthful women care about what they look like! Keep up the good work :)

Madmarie: Thank you very much for this video. This is kind of what I was thinking, but I really needed confirmation from an expert. I think it's really hard when you have pale skin and very dark hair-it's hard to know what to do with that when you get older. This has been very, very helpful. Thanks!

Trainurbody: Hi Megan....Congratulations on starting your own channel. This is a GREAT topic and your information is very helpful. I've been trying to find a stylist who has an eye for what looks best on ME, taking in my age, my skin tone, my facial structure, lifestyle, etc. Seems more difficult to find than I thought. I'm in my 60's and realize that has it's challenges, but I still want to look my best. I'm looking forward to learning more tips from you.

Louisiana Grandma: I just discovered you, Megan. I would never have guessed that you were new to doing videos, until you mentioned it. I like the fact that it feels as if, you're talking to me as a friend. You're not pretentious, just natural. I couldn't agree with you more, about dark hair colors on older women. I'm 71 and my younger, natural hair color was a dark, deep brown. Using dark browns overwhelms my face now. Asking my granddaughter what type of skin and haircolor I have, she came up with Mario Lopez, lol. My problem, is that I don't know if he would be considered a warm or cool color, if he changed his hair. Do you think I would be able to use a box and do it at home, or should I have the dye job I've used be lifted professionally and then colored by a stylist? I have many greys, especially in the front that pick up the color I put in and then my hair is two different colors. Thanks for your help.

Miss Mellie: Nice video. Wish you could have shown some samples of what colors are "acceptable" for us gals over 60 who don't want to go blond or grey. I'm a brunette who likes Jaclyn Smith's hair color and she is in her early 70's and looks great.

Annie Morgan: I really appreciated this video! You don’t even know how much you have helped me. I would love if you did a video on haircuts/styles for older woman also. Thanks again!!

spiritual love: Hi thank you for making this video. Im 42 years old I noticed I'm getting gray hair. My normal hair color is a medium brown but I colored my hair black to cover the gray . I noticed i look more older so this week im going into the salon to figure what to do. Im so glad I ran into this video it helps. I was thinking of lighting my hair with highlights? Is that safe? Lol

Vechizolu Khusho: Thank you for your amazing advice love it

Cynthia Hamil: It would be great to have you post some before and after pics of the type of transformations that you are talking about! Have you seen "the Makeover Guy"? He has a lot of videos where he is actually filming the transformation process. It has helped him to build a great business where people fly all over the country to have him work with their hair. They have a whole staff dedicated to makeovers. Check it out! I think you'd like his videos.

Olga Steam: Thank you so much for this material! That was really helpful

Marie van Wyk: Thanks for your excellent advice - much appreciated

Loves Dogs: Great advice. I dont mean to sound mean, but I am really tired of seeing the worst with pink hair, I wish this off the charts stuff would go away. My own color is still very dark, making it a conundrum.

Yeghine Nazarian: everything you said makes sense and your hair and makeup looks great.

Shayla Loveland: Megan, this is Shayla Tonya’s granddaughter. I love watching your videos!

Annette Garcia: Thanks so much I'm 62 years old i keep get my hair dyed and bleached and messing up follicles to stay healthy

STELLA Glover: Spot on, thank you

Gonzalez .: Thank you for the video ❤

Arlene Nipp: What do you suggest for moisture. I am 57 and my hair is fine texture but very thick and wavy. As a youth I was dirty blond. I have highlights but my big issue is dryness

Stephanie Kost: Great video and helpful.

Annette Garcia: I'm also 62 i keep bleaching and coloring my hair and messing up my hair follicles Thanks so much for your video

Iris Arroyo: Thanks for the advice about the haircolor

Deliciouslyme: Love the colour of your hair! As you can see from my profile picture my natural hair colour is dark brown. After a horrible last year I felt very heavy in spirit and decided to go ahead and bleach my hair at home and go blonde!!! I have to say I absolutely loved it but lately can see I look older because of it. It served its purpose of lifting my spirits but I’m just about to reluctantly go to the hair shop and get a caramel brown colour. I’m so glad I watched this as I was quite sad to let go of the blonde but your video just confirmed that indeed it can make one look older and at 49 when people saw me with dark hair they always thought I looked in my 30s now they know my age straight away . Nothing wrong with getting older BUT nice to keep youthful for as long as we can get away with it! Also, the dark hair made me look harsh and you are so right about one blemish standing out etc. Great and very useful video. Thank you! ❤️

Doris Porter: Great video!!!! So glad I found your channel!! Wish I lived closer!!

Sonia Pizarro: I wish I could go to your salon..thanks for the info..Megan

Barbara Buonincontro: Hi barb from Staten Island. Thank you. I'm 58 I would like to know what color blonde should I be my hair is very blond with dark highlights

Joanne Keefe: I really love that using a bit lighter but I still like the darker roots like you have but mine have gray in them. Or what do you call that? Shadow lighting? What about that?

Tumblelina Truth: Thank You Megan

Karina P: I think you should soften your eyebrows a little bit. They are too dark.

Dorota Anna J.: Thank you ,thank you ,thank you

Amy p: Could you call me??I want to get my hair redone and have been wanting that glow...to match my skin tone...I have stuck to blond highlights for since college....I think it suits me best....since your in Massachusetts..do you know of any one in west Jordan Utah or close by it?? I'm Amy...

166PolarBear: Yeah like she’s an older women, I doubt she’s even hit 40, pretty girl though

Chrissy: Megan I'm in Vermont now, but Haverhill in tha house!!! Weahs yah accent????

Kathy Smith: Thanks ur com.

Deb King-Foster: This didn’t help me at all….I have, at 72 yrs old, grey hair roots and some black still in the back. I learned nothing helpful at all from this video and had so hoped to.
