10 Fashion Classics You Should Never Part With | Fashion Trends 2022

A new year is always a good time to give your closet a little update but there are some pieces that fluctuate in popularity but they never actually disappear and in today's video I’m sharing 10 fashion classics to never purge from your closet.

It's all too easy to make the mistake of discarding pieces you've owned for a while. Familiarity breeds contempt - or so they saying goes. So it's easy to be a little too hasty when you're faced with a new year and you want to start afresh. But I wanted to give you a little friendly reminder that some pieces really do deserve to hang in your closet for more than a season or three. These pieces are our classics (btw they don't have to be boring) and the real foundation pieces to lots of different outfits. So if you're in the mood for a little early spring cleaning then maybe think twice before you discard these 10 fashion classics.

I'd also love to hear in the comments below if there are any items I haven't mentioned in this list that you will never part with. Anyway, I hope you managed to get some down time over the holidays and you're as excited as I am about the new year ahead.

Thanks for watching and see you soon.

A new year is the perfect time to give your closet a little bit of a makeover, but you do need to be careful because there are some classic pieces that may fluctuate in terms of popularity, but they never ever go out of style. And these are the pieces that you need to make sure you hold on to so, if you'd like to see what they are, then just keep watching hi, i'm leonie and welcome back to my channel and of course, if you're new here hello, welcome. I'M really pleased that you've found me. I have some exciting fashion videos planned for this year, so if you enjoy this, one, maybe consider subscribing now a new year is the perfect time to revisit our closets and kind of have a little bit of a look at the pieces that we own and ask Ourselves, whether they're, actually serving us or not, and if they're not now, is a good time to move them out. But you do have to be really careful that you don't move out some of the good core basics, and these are the pieces that you may not be that excited about. But they are pieces that deserve to stay in your wardrobe for the long haul they're the pieces that when you do move them out and get rid of them, you will regret it. So to avoid any new year regrets. I thought i would share some of the classic pieces that, regardless of what happens in fashion, they are worth holding on to okay, first up the one piece that i think is a real essential and of course, this is only if you are into this particular style And that is blazes. I know that some of my viewers aren't really fans of blazers but blazes, regardless of the fact that they are very on trend at the moment. They do obviously fluctuate in terms of popularity, but they are pieces that you can pull out years down the track and they will still work. They will still look modern and, of course, with all of these classic basic pieces. You can give them a modern, fresh, updated edge by pairing them back with some on trend pieces. So these pieces are very much the basics that you need to hold on onto. So if you have blazers in your lineup, whether they are fitted cropped or oversized, which is the current look at the moment, hang on to them, don't part with the blazers that you own already and of course, if you don't own any blazers, maybe it's worth considering Adding one to your lineup and just seeing whether it's a look that works for you, a blazer is a great finishing piece to a lot of outfits, so they are well worth giving a go now. Denim jeans is the next piece that i think we have to be really careful before we actually part with our denim now. At the moment, the trend in denim is for slightly oversized looser baggier, wide leg, denim jeans, but that doesn't necessarily mean that our skinny jeans, our slim fits, are gone forever. We know that fashion is cyclical and denim jeans, regardless of what is on trend at the moment, are always going to work. They'Re always going to help. You create some really cool outfits. So if you love your skinny jeans or whatever style, you're into really think twice before parting with your denim jeans, because they can be modernized really easily just with some fresh current updates so hold on to your denim, it really doesn't date. Now i learned this lesson. The hard way because i moved out a lot of my knee-high boots a couple of years ago when i moved house now, my thinking was that i wasn't working in a corporate office and i didn't actually need those knee-high boots. Most of them had heels, although no hang on a couple of them were flats, but i tended to move them all out and now i would love to own a couple of pairs of those exact boots that i moved out. So for that very reason, i have learnt my lesson the hard way i think knee-high boots and the same goes for ankle boots as well, regardless of the heel, the toe shape. These sorts of pieces are items that you really need to hold on to, and i know that heels and toes change on boots. But if you hold on to them for long enough, you are going to get that wear out of them. So really think, long and hard before you move out some of your good quality, footwear and speaking of footwear, the other classic that i think you should really hold on to is retro sneakers and obviously every season we see sneaker trends coming and going. You know some seasons, it's just all white sneakers, some some seasons, it's chunky, dad style, sneakers, some seasons, it's just really retro, but whatever it is that you own sneakers, are always going to be a good look and help. You create some really fab casual outfits so hold on to your sneakers, especially if they're in good condition and still look great hold on to them, because they really don't date, another classic that's worth holding on to, and this almost goes without saying, but i have included It on my list here and that is button-down shirts. Now i'm wearing a little short sleeve one today and it's not really a classic, because it has this kind of modern print on it, but just classic straight button-down, long-sleeve shirts are definitely worth hanging on to now. At the moment, we know that the oversized button-down shirts are trending, but all shirts are going to be a piece that you can pull out. You can wear them on their own, wear them as layering pieces, wear them as little beach cover-ups with the sleeves rolled up. There are so many different ways to wear a versatile, button-down shirt, and for that reason, and because they generally don't date, i really urge you to hold on to these pieces before you move them out. The other fashion item that is really worth holding on to for the long term uh your chunky, knits. Now, i'm sure a number of you are wearing and enjoying your chunky knits. Now they are amazing for snuggling up, especially when it gets cold outside. So these cozy chunky knits are obviously really practical, but they are the sort of piece that you can pull out year after year after year, and they will still look modern and there's just always a good look. In my opinion, super sized chunky knits are where it's at for this season, but any style chunky knit is going to work, no matter what every single winter so and again, as i said earlier, if you do want to give some of your classics a little bit Of a modern edge, you can do that with accessories with new purses or earrings or scarves, but some of these core basic pieces are well worth holding on to now. Personally, i kind of go on and off this trend a little bit, but it's the classic breton stripes, now, whether it's a striped tee or a long sleeve, tee or a top or a striped knit that classic britain stripe is never ever going to go out of Style and of course it will is there'll, be some seasons where it's more popular this season, it's not as popular, although stripes are trending at the moment that classic britain stripe is one that you can pull out and wear and look fresh and chic and stylish. No matter what so, if you're, having second thoughts about whether to hold on to some of those britain stripes, just those classic striped pieces, i would definitely say: stick with them another classic that is worth holding on to for a really long time. Are your long line coats now, i'm talking about your sort of maxi or calf length coats now, obviously, these coats are generally expensive, but they don't tend to date either. So, regardless of what's happening with the lapels, the collars, the the texture, the styling, whether they're, belted or not. These sorts of pieces are really timeless and they are the kind of finishing piece to an outfit in winter and not to mention they are warm and cozy. And super practical - and you guys know i'm all about being practical, so really hold on to your your good quality winter coats, because they will serve you for many many years now when it comes to keeping warm the other classic piece to hold on to is your Puffer coats, jackets and vests and of course, we've seen lots and lots of puffers currently and in lots of different colorways, and i think what happens with puffers and i did move one out a number of years ago and i think the reason i did that was Because it was so bulky and taking up so much space in my closet now, what i needed to do was just to move it out and pack it away until the following winter, because it is a piece that is going to be really versatile and lightweight. So easy to travel with there are so many pluses to a puffer or, as we've seen this season quite a few quilted coats as well or cloud coats as they tend to have been called. But these pieces really are essentials that are great for just keeping you warm and adding a little bit of a fun fashion edge, especially as i said, some of the colorful puffers that we've seen around this season so hold on to those puff of pieces. And if you don't already own any, maybe now is a good time to invest, because there are some great sales happening at the moment too. So have a little look now. The next one is a personal favorite of mine and it is a slip dress. Now i have a couple of slip dresses in my lineup and they've got me out of a bind so many times when i've kind of had nothing new to wear, and the great thing about them is that they really are a trans, seasonal piece, so slip dresses And also camisole slip tops as well, because they're, a great layering piece with the option of either layering, something underneath them or layering something over them and a slip dress can look more like a skirt if you layer over a chunky, knit and pair it with some Knee-High boots, i love the fact that they are just so versatile and so trans seasonal as well, and if you don't like showing off your arms, then use layers to disguise some of those areas of your body that you don't like to show off, but a classic Slip dress in any colorway or a slip. Camisole are two pieces that will always remain in my closet, no matter what the last classic that's really important to hold on to, and these are the pieces that are really kind of easy to move out and we tend to regret them, and that is our favorite Dresses now beautiful dresses tend to be really timeless pieces, and it's kind of easy to forget that now, i'm not talking about evening dresses, i'm just talking about the dresses that you would say where to work. Or i know, i've got a couple of linen dresses that i've worn over summer here in new zealand, and these are pieces that, regardless of what's happening in terms of trends and fashion i'll, be able to wear for years to come. If i think about some of my favorite dresses they're pieces that i've actually owned for many years, so it's all too easy to get caught up in the trends and think that this particular style isn't trending. But remember it's really easy to give some of your favorite pieces a bit of a modern update with accessories so really think twice before you move out some of your classic and trusty dresses anyway. That'S it from me today. I hope you enjoyed this one. If you did i'd love you to give it a big thumbs up, don't forget to subscribe to my channel for more and i'll catch you in the next one bye. For now, you

Lynette Raab: This is such great advice and is especially timely in the new year when people tend to go "declutter' crazy. I have made the mistake of being too quick to get rid of pieces then later regretted it, and also had the experience of hanging on to something I never wore for a couple of years, then when I did finally start wearing it, it turned out to be a wardrobe workhorse! Now I've moved to a new job in a new state which will require some changes in my wardrobe, I am making these changes very slowly and thoughtfully though based on my previous experiences. Thanks as always for your great videos and content. I always enjoy them!

Linda Caffalette: I'm with you 100% Leonie.....having kept those items in my closet, I can now reach for them & it is so much fun! As a seasoned woman of age LOL, I have always been into fashion. I tru!y enjoy wearing everything I've held on to. As a collector of outerwear, I'm now challenging myself to wear a different outerwear piece every day!!! Thanks...

Pavla: I've held onto a few pairs of wider leg and boot cut jeans from about 20 years ago - I was too heavy for them for some time but have since lost weight and these jeans saved me from buying this style again . I recently purchased two Aron mills Irish knit sweaters that I know will far outlast the sweaters with high viscose content that I've attained the last few years . Sticking to the classic styles serves us well and are better investment pieces .

Katherine Miller: Blazers and jackets are a mainstay in my wardrobe! They’re practical for chilly offices and they’re wonderful layering pieces that can make an outfit look more polished or trendy. Perhaps I have too many jackets, but I wear them all.

Denise Oates: This is a great subject, and you know this has been my main train of thought throughout what trending and not videos. So, it really cool that you finally did this type of video. Because through our conversations we both agree that this is really the best of time as far as fashion because really anything goes, if you like it, style it your way and if you are kind of not feeling it for now boxed it up and mark it as such for instance like skinny leg jeans, rip jeans, etc. You kind of skipped over jewelry and accessories like belts, scarves but that fine because these are the items that kind of help update a look or just bring interest. Very few people wear or think of brooches anymore, but I took a scarf and a brooch and pinned it outside my breast pocket, and I also used brooches to cinch in a garment and people complimented me for it. I will be turning 60, January 8th and I have clothing or accessories that are almost as old as my kids. This is why I trying to stay away from pleather garments/accessories (I did say try) because how they are known to desegrated so quickly. I am favoring lower heels at this time because of an injured foot but do plan to be getting back into the heel of things (lol). Blow some of that warm weather temps my way, our high is going to be 14F. brrrrr! You did good here. Thanks for sharing and blessing to you and all in the days to come.

Adventurous Geek: Thats why staying closer to classic cuts is important because even a “classic” piece can become outdated if the cut of it is too trendy!

jacqueline schael: I'm glad I've hang on to my long coats and knee high boots. It's been only a decade but they're back and forever in style! Thanks again Leonie for a great video with useful reminders.

Jane Rothrock: This is a great topic. The models you show are so helpful in fashion ideas moving forward in the new year. Yes I will keep my heel high boots and sneakers thanks to you!

Melda Sharif: I never part with my classic/loved pieces regardless of trend. It's better to wear what suits you and you feel great in, regardless of what's on trend at the moment, not to mention a lot kinder to your wallet. As you said there are many ways one can update and revive a classic look ☺️

Freda Learhinan: Good advice... I remember letting go a beautiful black oversized jacket with white squiggles on it about 25yrs ago and still think about it. So now I store and review each year.. a animal print fur coat is one and a black jacket that I have now had and still wear 25 yrs later and feel amazing in. Good advice which will remind me to keep these items xx

Dee_xx: Really sage advice and a helpful reminder - I agree with all of it!!

Ilo Kinny: Happy New year to you!!! Really appreciate your efforts and hardwork. Ps: blazers and sneekers are my all time favourites ❤

Yvette Bryant: Good ideas for items to consider for keeping in your closet and continuing to wear . It is the dresses/skirts and boots for me. Happy New Year

Kimberly Perrotis: Today I’m wearing my navy suede tall boots that I bought 20 years ago, they look absolutely current. I have also been wearing my chunky boots a lot, they’re even older. I keep my leather footwear for ever, so long as they’re comfy.

Helene Bedar: I am grateful for this video Ms Leonie because..it is perfect with recycling; reusing and not wasting....in our days, it is SO crucial! Thank you!!! :))

Celeste Collinsworth: It looks so warm and sunny there! We're having a snowstorm in Eastern Kentucky today. I'm sure it's much worse in other states, but 4 to 8 inches is a lot for us! Especially when it's falling at 1-2 inches an hour Anyway, I hadn't wore skinny jeans in over a year till a couple weeks ago. I hadn't got rid of any because, no matter what Gen Z says, skinny jeans are now a classic! But I decided if I want to wear them with a particular outfit then I'm gonna do that heck, I'm wearing a pair right now

Bri Peterson: Blazers are a must !!!!! I have blazers I’ve held on for yearsssssss. And add new ones often. Sadly, my closet is overstuffed with mostly blazers ‍♀️

Gina Mihailidis: I was having a pretty shitty day but you made me smile. Like you I have tossed items that I regreted, but no more, now I keep the good quality items because they do come back and sometimes really fast.I was this close to giving away my over the knee leather boots, fortunately I didn't and am enjoying them again.Thank you lovely Leonne

Tara T: Funny I’ve been cleaning out my clothes this week and trying to figure out what I will use year after year. I feel I need to keep velvet pants velvet blazer for around the holidays also any metallic top , sequin top or holiday time tops because I got rid of everything and this year I was hoping not to spend unnecessarily but I did invest in a few and I know better this time I will keep them.

FashionIsMyPassionGirl: ❤️❤️❤️love this video! I totally agree with you on all these. I never throw away any of these styles. Thank you and happy new year!

Janna Martens: I love wearing jeans now because I’ve flattened my lower abs . I love knee high boots there so fun . Yes this is my first year of wearing crop sweaters so exciting pieces I’ve always wanted to wear .

Mikki39: I would add, turtleneck sweaters to the mix. I am not a fan of button downs or slip dresses so I rid myself of them a while back with no regrets.

Sue Dyer: Such great advice I’m now doing a backflip and putting somethings back in my wardrobe, love your videos.

Karen Rivera: Wow this was so spot on practical & amazing! Can you do a video where you mix high & low fashion pieces, e.g. mix something from Everlane or Theory with an Express/H&M piece etc. ❣‽

Valorie Griego: Happy 2022 Leonie! Nice one...I agree these pieces are good to hold on to.

Denisa Dellinger: I made the mistake of getting rid of pieces that were too small for me. Now I am that size again and I regret getting rid of them but at the time, they were just sitting in my closet taking up space. I miss those linen blazers in all colors. I had a red, black, and kaiki one and I think I had a navy one as well but they had those big shoulders. I never get rid of coats or boots. But if shoes are older and worn, if you do not keep wearing them, they crack and fall apart. Also things with elastic in it does not age well in a box or hanging in the back of a closet for years.

Bella: I just bought a chunky beige sweater and a striped light blue and white striped sweater. They never go out of style. I work in an office and have tons of button down that I wear with sweater over them, or I will open them up and tie them at the waist and wear a cute colored camisole underneath them in the Spring and Summer.

Practical Pip: I love love love blazers! I think they are the most chic item to own. I still need to find a good pair of dark brown and tan knee boots bc my old brown pair started to peel and fall apart I wore them so much. That is the worst when you have to part with favorite shoes. I'm a huge fan of long coats, even though I'm petite. I need to shorten one I thrifted, but it's amazingly chic and timeless.

Tracy Boyall: I'm busty so button-down shirts do not look good on me so I don't possess any! I adore Bretton stripe have about 3 of them! Great advice on boots, sneakers and coats.

Henriette Bjarney Kjeldgaard: Slip dresses are SO unforgiving, so I will not be sporting one. ALL lumps and bumps can be seen... But I agree with the other items. :-)

Bel Bush: Agree with everything but puffers and slip dresses. But it’s just me. Awesome video (as always!), Leone! REALLY

Ely Jane: I have a number of 'blazers' in a variety of styles. They never feel 'off' when I wear them, but cardigans on me make me look very old. I only keep what I feel good in.

Eli: Wow, I must say I agree with every piece of closing you mentioned. This was very informative

June Barber: Such a good thought-provoking vid - thank you so much

Halina Meson: I always enjoy your channel. Your fashion clips are the best of all time. Love love ❤️

Wake up Style: Love this!!! Thank you for making this video

Irynne Kwamboka Ngoko: Thank you for this great inspiration

Linda Brodie: Thanks for this fantastic clip today Leonie. You are looking great by the way so what ever you are doing, stick with it. I love all your items except slip dresses as I have an hourglass body with large boobs! I love separates especially blazers and have heaps of them. I find that I wear a lot of pants and tops and favour a masculine type of style which really contradicts my body shape. I am turning 65 in a week and although I work out with weights 3 times a week and do Pilates I am really struggling to keep weight down so I can fit into my clothes! You are an inspiration and I tune in weekly from Melbourne across the pond.

gina d: I will never depart from my Oversized Shirts... I love walking around my Home in Them.,!!! they will Forever be a Statement Piece for me.❤

melinda ferreira: so good!!!! great advice as always. total agreement! all the best from Arizona. Happy New Year!!!!

Kimberly Perrotis: I regret donating my beautiful wool blazers, I can’t find the same quality now, and they were classic.

Elsa Bassi: I've learned the hard way too ... Excellent video

Pam B: I gave a lot of my chunky sweaters to my family who live in the north. I kept a few and I’m glad I did, because it’s cold here in the south where I live. I think we’re moving further south. My husband doesn’t.Ike to be cold. And neither do I, but he’s getting worse than me. I don’t own any slip dresses, so I think I need to add one. And I don’t have too many dresses either. I live a casual life. But it wouldn’t hurt to have a nice dress in my closet. My husband bought a new suit a while ago for our daughters wedding. So I need a nice dress, just in case we ever go somewhere really nice. I’m not sure where that would be, we live in the country and I own way more sensible clothing than dressy. But I can always hope.

Pat Torelli: I may be showing my age here, but I think slip dresses only look good on the very young and very slim. Agree with the rest of your video, though!

Jess w: Fantastic tips. You are looking so fresh and gorgeous, love this look.

Mândră la oglindă: Hello style inspiration! Thank you for a new amazing video! Happy new year!

fernanda7410: I love your chanel is always real and your trends wearables... in my country we just have cold and warm weather... And my city is super cold, so I'm gonna use my long coats for long time

Mary pliska: Great advice… thank you!

LC Kendel: Good news about blazers, but what about the cut? I have a lot of short blazers with small pockets (very early 2000s), where today the boyfriend blazers seem more on trend. Are there any guidelines about this?

Debbie Hynek: Great suggestions! I too have let go of items I shouldn't have.

Owani Iroso: I have one blazer and only 2 pairs of jeans but my colored trench are a must, great content thanks

Amy Avital: CLASSIC COWBOY BOOTS! I’ve had my Nacona’s in black and brown for literally 40 years!

virginie helm: Great sustainable video! Thank you!

em's favorite: Do you save the photos that you enclosed in your vidoes on any platforms ? Thanks for your great videos

Goldie Markowitz: I love blazers!, Even at 60, I love your suggestions and channel

Paula Parham: I'm a new subscriber and I love, love, love your content!

Cool Breeeze: Good Stuff! As Per Usual

Nelda Nuñez-Corte: Love the video, I agree

KM Health: I would like to know where you got your blouse with the faces pattern. It is cute!

LIZZ KABAT: such fun….I watched it twice…Thanks

Louise Dolloff: Part with my beloved denim? How dare anyone suggest such sacrilege!

GroovySecondHalf: I’ve owned a cream color calf length wrap / robe style cashmere coat forever.

Ivone Arias: Those style trends, shear me up for this winter, still holding thunky knits, there in San Diego California, we have a very cold weather, and currently we are styling those trends, when They. Focus here with the beach, that cenit true here. Still have my clasic tripes, And not only on black and white color, blac and brown thatI renew them this past fall. As well as coats are timeless, so the Buffet still holding this 2020 then the lock out safe advise.

Vicki Campbell: this is right on time. i am purging my closet as of last night

Linda Adams: This year, I'm going to purchase a pair of low heel over the knee boots. I don't own a pair at all.

paula mueller: Thanks another one well done!

judy smith: love your advice on fashion Leoni

Catherine Holler: I am not a sneaker girl. I use them for work. my classic shoes are loafers and ballet slippers

N GM: Have you checked Vivaia for some eco friendly knee high boots and shoes

Depy Xirouchakis: & long roomy pants seem to me to be classic, i have 3 of them & wear them with modern tops

Gillian Gamble: Great advice

jackie chen: Omg , love your blouse, just fab❤️❤️

Cbre: I just wish I knew more outfits w/ blazers besides the typical white tshirt and jeans.

Kino Styles: Love the shirt you're wearing.

Ishta Neel: Grt .. sensible video

Janna Martens: Me I love sweater dresses there so cute there my favourite

Louise Gillan: I love your blouse.

Pam Kaakee: Fitted blazers don’t look modern with updated pieces

Alpha Fé: ❣️❣️❣️

Madona Fashion: good

Barbara Soutas: Slip dresses? They are only attractive IMO on under 30 tall quite thin women.

Lucy: Finally new blouse the black and white squares was horrible

Lucy Braun: I'm saying this to you as a friend, Leoni: You REALLY, REALLY use the word, "really," a whole lot in your videos, and it becomes very difficult to listen to. Otherwise, it's been exceedingly pleasant to learn from you.
