Hello, ladies, my name is breanna rutter and in this tutorial we are gon na talk all about natural hair types. That means we are going to explore. Curl patterns, hair density, hair, texture and hair porosity. So I'm gon na Giada take some notes, because this video is gon na, be a good one and before we get started I know some of you are gon na want to know. What'S going on with this hairstyle, what it is and have I done a tutorial on it? Yes and all you got ta do - is check out any information and links provided down below in the description. So without further ado, let's jump right into this video, so the first thing we're going to do is jump into curl patterns. Now there are plenty of curl patterns ranging from type 1 all the way to type 4c, but in this video specifically, I want to focus on type 4 hair, because I know a lot of my viewers love to know or hear more explanations about how they can Actually define their hair curl patterns range from type 1, which is literally bone straight hair, naturally, all the way to type 4c, which is extremely tight, coily hair that resembles to the naked eye. Afro, like texture for a curl pattern, is a medium curl and it does not break as easily and the reason why is because the hair curl of this type is loose. So that means that it's independently spiraling or curling away from other neighboring curls, so you're not gon na see a lot of interlocking between the curls. But of course, there's always exceptions and because the curls are not as tight and they're loose and they don't interlock. As frequently this significantly reduces its natural breakage, so this hair type is not gon na, be the type of hair that breaks very often or very easily, which is a good thing when it comes to length retention, length, retention means being able to obtain longer links without Your hair receding in length because of breakage a big negative to type for a hair, is that it's very difficult to keep styles lasting longer than two days now. There are exceptions out there. So I want to be clear throughout this video that everyone is not gon na, be specifically every detail that I say, but the descriptions that I'm giving for the hair types will fit. The majority of yours who are watching when it comes to type for a hair. It'S very difficult to maintain a style for a very long time, usually no longer than two days, because the hair is very soft and it has more of elongated curl in nature. So it's difficult to have lasting power with your hairstyles when it comes to hair shrinkage with for a hair, hair shrinkage means your hair's ability to actually shrink in size when wet so with for a hair. Your hair shrinkage is actually very close to your real length when straight now, so just as an example just imagine having 20 inch long hair now, if you're type 4 8. Here your hair to the naked eye when wet, will look about 18 to 16 inches. On average, so this is a big plus for women that like to show off their natural length when they have type 4 hair, especially for a here, because for a hair doesn't shrink as much as the other hair types, which would be 4b and 4c. When it comes to for a hair, a lot of women say it's very easy to keep their hair moisturized by just using a little bit of light oil such as a few drops, or using just a small pump of some leave-in hair conditioner. To put on your hair to give them lasting moisturizing effects with their style, so now we're gon na talk about 4b hair and when it comes to 4b here these curls are tighter than 4a curls, 4 acres or a little looser and texture in the diameter is Usually a little wider, so that means it gives you more of a clear distinction between the two with 4b hair. It resembles tight curls, not extremely tight coils, which are a lot smaller in diameter, not coils curls, which are wider in diameter, but not as wide as for egg curls. So when you actually compare 4a curls to 4b curls, there's a clear distinction being that the 4a curls are looser and wider in diameter and 4b curls are tighter in a little bit more narrow in diameter, 4b hair has a tendency at times to have moderate breakage When you are neglecting your hair, so this can come with minimal neglect or a lot of neglect, meaning you're not properly washing and conditioning and detangling your hair on a consistent basis. Now, a big plus with those who have 4b here is that they can actually hold a style for a couple of days without any issue of their curls reverting back to soon. So it's usually about the mark of half a week to a week where those before be hair are ready to try a new style again anyway. One pro and con when it comes to having for be hair is that a lot of women say that, with their shrinkage, their hair actually looks 50 % of their true length. So let's take this, for example, having straight 20 inch hair for those who have 4b here say that their hair actually shrinks up to about 50 %, which means that to the naked eye, their hair will look 10 inches long when in reality, their hair is 20 Inches long and the reason why I say that's a pro and a con is because a lot of those before B hair can actually get away with having shorter lengths and actually experimenting with different types of cuts and styles that actually hide the true length of their Hair, but for those who always like to have their hair stretched out or elongated, that may say that that's a big time because they wouldn't want to have asthma shrinkage, but the shrinkage of horribie hair is nothing compared to 4c hair. So when it comes to 4c hair, this hair looks like afro so the nekkid eye, but in reality, if we take a closer look, you will see very tight small coils or Springs throughout your hair. If you have 4c hair now, you may be wondering what's the difference between a coil and a curl, it's all about the diameter of the size of the curl when the curl is a lot wider and easier to see to the naked eye. This is considered a curl when the diameter of your coil is very small and hard to see with the naked eye unless you're very close, then that's a coil, so that's one of the biggest differences between knowing, if you're, actually, 4b or 4c. So when it comes to 4c hair, this hair is chronically known to break and I've had my own experiences with 4c hair because I naturally have 4c hair. Now my hair is relaxed and, of course, I'm wearing a crochet style right now. So you can't see my hair, but throughout my tutorials, and especially if you go back in time, you will see how my hair looks in its natural state, with my 4c hair. Every single hair on my head literally look like little tiny Springs, but to the naked eye. It looked just like a regular fro out style when it comes to 4c hair. It breaks so easily because the curls are so tight and small and they wind around each other all the time, even when you detangle 4c hair literally just wait a half an hour and go back through again on dry hair, and you will realize that the hair Is as if it never got detangled a lot of women can't stand us about their hair, but a lot of women love this about the hair, because guess what 4c hair holds the best styles for the longest period of time. This is compared to 4a 4b hair because it ain't got nothing on the holding power of 4c here, because 4c hair defies gravity. One big negative to 4c hair is that it's very difficult to keep it moisturized for longer periods of time being that this hair is usually drier and more coarser or kinky in nature. This means that you want to use heavier oils on your hair or hair butters. To maintain an elasticity to your hair elasticity is how stretchy your hair feels will manipulate me. You want it to have a healthy level of elasticity so that your hair does not break as easily being that 4c hair tends to break a lot easier than other hair types. You want to make sure you're always keeping 4c hair moisturized so that you're helping your hair to grow to longer lengths in honey when it comes to shrinkage. A lot of women with 4c hair, including myself in the past experiences I've had with my hair, is that literally only 25 % of your length shows in your hair unless you straighten it. So let's consider this, for example, if you got 4c hair and it's 20 inches long, but it reverts back to its kirlia state. Your hair will literally look five inches long, typically now ain't that a ripoff. So now that you understand type 4, a hair type, 4 B here and type 4c hair, I need you to leave a comment down below letting me know. What'S your hair type and if you have multiple hair types, let me know as well, because no one only has one type of curl pattern. Some of you may have a mix of 4a, 4b, 4a, 4 c, 4b, 4c or a combination of all three. So now that we've discussed curl patterns we're going to talk about hair densities, hair textures and hair porosity when it comes to hair density, there's two types of hair densities that most people have - and this is going to be thick hair and thin. Hair hair density is a visual representation of how easy it is to see your scalp through your hair. So for those of you who have thinner hair on the edges of your hairline or around the perimeter of your head, this means that you have thin density hair around your hairline, but for most women or for most people. The further back you go along the scalp by looking more further back on the head. You notice that the hair looks thicker. This means that the density is a lot more meaning, there's more follicles on the scalp closer together, making it harder to see your scalp through your hair unless you actually separate your hair or part your hair or smooth your hair back, but just looking at your hair Without touching it, if you can see very easily through your head around your head for the most part, you have thin hair. But if it's very difficult to see through your scalp, no matter where you look unless you're only looking very close to your hairline, then this means you have thick density hair for those of you who have to know first shirt. What is my hair density? All you got ta do. Is the hair tie test? So how do you do the hair tie test? You literally get an elastic hair tie and you're going to put your hair in a ponytail. So what does this tell you if you can wrap the ponytail holder around your hair at least three times you have thin hair, but if you cannot for the life of you wrap a regular hair tie around your ponytail for at least three times, then you, my Friend have thick density hair comment down below. What'S your hair density, is it thick, is it thin or is it a combination of both so now we're going to talk about hair, texture and hair texture usually falls in two categories of coarse and fine, coarse, hair texture is how your hair feels when you're running Your fingers, through your hair, can you literally feel each strand when you're actually touching your hair, if you can and if your strands feel very thick and full, this means that you have coarse textured hair when it comes to coarse hair texture. This hair texture usually feels dry to touch even right after you've, moisturized your hair and your hair has absorbed the moisture. You will still when running your fingers through feel that it has a slight dryness tour, because coarse hair just is easier to feel through your fingers. When it comes to fine textured hair, this hair is softer to touch than coarse hair and when you actually feel fine here, it's very difficult to count how many strands of hair are in between your fingers without looking at it, because the strands of fine hair is Actually, very small in diameter compared to coarse hair strands, are a lot thicker in diameter, making it easier to feel and touch and know how many strands are in your hair when rubbing it. Also, one thing is that fine, textured hair can be a little deceiving because to the touch it would actually feel like it's slightly moisturized. Even when it's dry and that's because fine textured hair is usually a lot softer to feel and because there is a lot more strands taking up a smaller amount of space, it's very difficult to truly feel whether or not your hair is dry. Unless you know your hair and you always have issues with dryness, those are the only times you can usually tell when it comes to hair densities and hair textures. There are only four combinations and most people will predominantly fall under one of them, so I'm gon na list them so that you can get an idea of which one you mostly fit in thick: fine hair, thick, coarse, hair, thin, coarse, hair, thin, fine hair. So what I want you to do is let us know down below in the comments: what combination of hair density and texture do you fall under and what products work for you so that you can help out beauty. Community low porosity is hair that actually takes a lot longer to fully feel saturated with water, and it's very common for you to actually wash your hair for a total of five minutes before you fully feel that all of your strands are saturated with water. When it comes to drying low porosity hair, it takes forever usually about an hour or longer. So if you, my friend, have low porosity hair, I need you to please invest in a hooded, dryer or a blow dryer, because it can take a lot longer for your hair to dry, naturally without any product. And then, when you add oil on top of low porosity hair, it can take hours even overnight to properly dry products that work great for low porosity. Hair are usually heavier butters or creams, such as using shea butter or cocoa butter, even using more of a lighter. But heavier oil, like olive oil in their hair, can help the hair to maintain moisture for longer periods of time being that it's very difficult for water to go in and out of the hair shaft, because the hair has low porosity medium porosity hair. On the other hand, is somewhere in the middle between the abilities of low porosity, hair and high processing medium porosity hair is the perfect balance of being able to wet your hair and, literally under a couple of minutes, when washing your conditioning and to be able to Air dry, our hair in less than an hour, so it has the best of both because it's easy for water to go in and out of the hair shop as well as chemicals if you're coloring your hair. But it doesn't dry so fast, like high porosity hair. With medium porosity hair, you usually have the choices to actually lock in moisture, which is water by using light oils or a mix of heavier creams and butters. On the hair, such as shea butter, cocoa butter, you can even use coconut oil, argan oil jojoba oil on the hair as well to help you to maintain a moisture balance. So you want to experiment with different products that have these as their base oil ingredients to see which one's works for you when it comes to high porosity hair. On the other hand, this hair tends to actually dry very quickly and get wet very quickly. Usually it can actually give saturated wet when your hair underwater in less than a minute, but it also dries just as fast meaning that you usually will see that without any product. Your hair, your hair, can literally dry super-quick in like 30 minutes, but this is a big time, because if your hair can dry very quickly, you actually lose moisture all the time. A lot of women who have high processing hair always complain that the hair feels so dry and it's hard to keep moisture in it. But those who also usually have high porosity hair usually notice that their hair is thinner and finer, meaning that it's very difficult to put heavy products on their hair. So you want to make sure that you're, using a light oils such as coconut oil jojoba oil, to help you to actually seal in moisture. Another thing you can do is use humectants on your hair. Humectants are ingredients inside of products that actually help to draw moisture from your environment and a great human that you can use on your hair is aloe vera gel or you can purchase some aloe vera juice and mix that in your products, to give you more staying Power with your moisture when actually adding a moisturizer to your hair. Now, if you are sick of playing the guessing game when it comes to your hair porosity, we gon na put all that to rest. The only thing you got to do to know once and for all, if you have low, medium or high porosity hair, is to do the water test. The water test is you're, just getting a regular cup of water, making sure it's at room temperature and what you're gon na do is you're gon na grab a couple of strands of your hair: that's actually product free, so it's actually freshly washed dried hair that doesn't Have any product on it and the easy way to get this hair is not to snip your hair, it's to actually wash your hair in the sink use a hair, catcher and catch your freshly washed hair that naturally came off from washing it you're gon na. Let it dry - and this is gon na - be your sample to do your water test. So you're gon na take a couple of strands of this freshly washed air dry hair with no product and you're. Going to put a few drops in your cup of water and you're only going to do this for five minutes, because you can easily see where your hair falls along the if the hair stays at the top of the cup. After five minutes, you have low porosity, hair, meaning it's very difficult for your hair to absorb water. If, after five minutes, the hair starts to sink to the middle of the cup, this means you have medium porosity hair and if you notice after five minutes, your hair, just straight-up falls to the bottom of the cup. This means you have high porosity hair, which means that your hair absorbs water very fast. So let me know: what's your hair processing, I have a mix of medium to low porosity hair. It takes forever for me to get my hair wet and it takes me forever for my hair to naturally dry without product and even when I add product on it, it takes even longer. So let me know: what's your hair porosity and what do you like or dislike about it, and how do you make your porosity work in your favor? Let us know down below in the comments. So, ladies, if y'all enjoyed this video and want me to do more videos like this on different hair topics, all you got ta do is, let me know down below. We talked about curl patterns, specifically what type four, and we also talked about: hair textures, hair density and hair porosity. So that means I need y'all to give me a profile down below of your hair and tell me its pros and cons and what products work for you, because if you tell us the techniques of products that work for you, then we can help out the entire Beauty community have lustrous beautiful hair by the way this ain't, my hair, but you know I'm an act like it in this moment. You know when I take a closer look at it looks like it could be see not three, but we gon na pretend okay. So if y'all enjoyed this tutorial, let me know what more you want to see and I'll check out in my next one.

Breanna Rutter: BRESQUAADDD I had sooo much fun doing the LIVE CHAT with yall! What VIDEOS do you want me to do next??

Honda Civic: This is hands down, the BEST description of 4A, 4B and 4C, Periodt! I’m tired of following people that leave me confused, your thorough knowledge and understanding of hair textures and maintenance, is a breath of fresh air!

Alexia Mickles: This was AMAZING!!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I have 4B hair while one of my sister has 4A and the other has 4C and we've always wondered why we couldnt do the same things with our hair and why our fros looked so different when we did the same things. This was such an eye opener and I honestly wish more people made videos like this!

Charlie Luzuka: I have 4a and 4b. I loved how you’ve explained their pros and cons. It explains so much. I have fine, thick hair and low porosity.

Joyce Miller: Hi Breanna, thanks for that great tutorial on hair texture types, I learned so much . My hair texture is 4c. You already know girl, Ive been doing the hair challenge now since July 2020 and my hair has definitely grown out longer, its more difficult to do my hair now that I am doing my own hair, it literally takes a whole day and believe me I get tired of doing it. Are hair masks good for growth, length, and softness?

Chantelle Montgomery: I have 4d. That's the hair that destroys combs, and brushes!❤

Cendra Williams: I love this video. VERY informative! I have 2 daughters and 3 different hair types in my family. Daughter 1: 4c, thick, coarse, low porosity. Daughter 2: 4a thick, fine, medium/low porosity. Myself: 4b/c thick, coarse, medium/low porosity.

* FlowerChild *: Does anyone else’s hair randomly like to pretend it’s a different hair type for a day?

Summer B: Great job explaining things so clearly! I’ve been looking for a good breakdown of type 4 hair. You did it! Thanks!

Marilynne Baldwin: 4c, low density, fine - wasn’t always this way. I’m 60 now - after menopause at age 40 - everything about my hair changed (like a cancer patient going through chemotherapy). I’ve never heard it explained so clearly - thank you so much

belle_graciaz: This is so informative, I still struggle to know my hair type, but I think my hair is a mixture of 4a & 4b

Shanika Myers: 4C thick density coarse hair that's low porosity with fine edges that breaks easily. Its a challenge but i love it.

Mister Ghoul: Thank you for this video! I'm a melanin-challenged mother of a beautiful 2 year old. Her hair type is something I never had exposure to before and it's been a tremendous learning experience. My bathroom is filled with dozens of products because I'm always fighting to find ones that works. My older daughters' friends love spending the night and say we're the one white household where they can actually do their hair before going out. Lol I THINK my baby is a 4A and 4B. In the back, it's different though. It's much straighter and always feels dry and tangled, almost matted in little straight clumps. I'm not sure if that's because she sleeps on that part or not. It's the hardest part to detangle but she's a trooper and pretty patient with me.

Felicia Taylor: I thought there was something abnormal about me having different types of hair but now I see this is normal. Thank you so much for making this video. I was feeling very depressed thinking I was not normal. Now that I know what I can do with my hair from learning what type hair I have I feel confident in doing it. Thank you so much.

Mimi J: Sis, with my 4c hair I can’t even get it into a poinytail, I’m so glad I watched this. My hair looked like to shrunk well it did and I noticed that my hair was still growing it just didn’t look like that. I was so relieved seeing this video

Arlene Augusta Hair: Unfortunately, a lot of people think that they have coarse hair and they really don’t. They will have medium texture but a lot of density. People think that because their hair is dry that it is coarse. Basically, according to the chart, your hair would actually be a 4B and not a 4C. We don’t even use this chart in the industry because it is misleading. One of Oprah’s stylist created this chart and people ran with it. I’m a Licensed Cosmetologist. They taught us about texture and formation. The reason why some people’s hair doesn’t do the same as some YouTubers is because they don’t know about their density, elasticity or porosity. Those other three things are also important factors in choosing products for your hair. Unfortunately, people end up becoming product junkies because they don’t know what hair products to use with their hair. They also don’t know about layering products to get a good result. There is actually 3 different textures: fine, medium and coarse. They represent the letters of the chart. The numbers represent the formation: straight, wavy, curly and coily. People need to know their texture, formation, density, elasticity and porosity. You will never know what kind of products to use if you don’t know those 5 things. If you have low porosity it means the products are just sitting on top of your hair. In order for products to penetrate your hair you need to have the cuticles raise. Medium porosity is the best because the cuticle is raise enough. You do not need to change anything you are doing. High porosity your hair soaks up products easily. If you have lightened or colored your hair, your regimen is going to change because you’re going to have to use products for color treated and/or lightened hair.

Pntngbrn: I think my hair is a mix of 4a and 4b. It’s thick to the scalp be soft. This is one of the best most comprehensive explanations of hair videos I have ever watched. Easy to understand and follow. Thanks for this!

Black Butterfly: Thank u, thank u, thank u for explaining the differences in curl patterns, especially between 4b and 4c. For the longest time, I didn’t know if I was one or the other. Now I know I’m mostly 4c in my crown with a touch of 4b on the sides and back. The visual explanation of actual curls vs coils helped, also. Nicely done.

Kylie Ann🥰: Im a biracial female & I have 3c, 4a & 4b hair lol. I'm on month 7 transitioning from relaxed to natural.. love your videos. Would love to see more wash routines, detangling, & conditioning & best conditioning/detangling products for type 4 hair :)

Keta Arde: Excellent and informative video! My 2 daughter’s have different hair type. One has 4C and fine textured and the other has 4A/B and fine textured hair and require totally different approaches to wash/ moisture and braid etc! You were so dead on! This was excellent!

Kassi Edwards: Girl you PREACHED when it came to 4C hair!!! I almost passed the collection plate and got my shout on. But this video gave me more confidence, thank you!

Lisa L. Gruman: Such a helpful, clear presentation. Beautifully done. Learned a lot.

Audreanna Sauro: This was SO informative. I am officially 4B/C hair! I’ve been going back and fourth for months trying to figure it out!!

Katasia Symone: This video was not only detailed but it kept me interested the whole time. Absolutely love it!

T C: Girl! I have 4z (4c haha) hair, coarse and thick (don't know porosity yet). Very hard to deal with. But easier since I'm learning more. I've been using Melanin Haircare. The leave-in works great at detangling and moisturizing. The cream and oil are good too. I've been cutting out single strand knots to try to get my hair back on track. Oh, I really like the mane choice too. (Ancient Egyptian is my favorite). Thanks for this video, it was great.

Naima Lamar: *Me throughout this video:* 'okay so I'm not 4a" "oh im definitely 4b" "oh wait- maybe I'm 4c" "so am I 4a or 4c?"

Michael R. Wright: This was truly an AMAZING tutorial of hair knowledge! Thanks so much!

Wendy Winchester: I had no idea there were classifications of hair other than curly, wavey, or straight. This is fascinating! My son-in-law is apparently 4C.

Jacqui KV: Thank You so much!! This is the best educational video on porosity, density and thickness that I have found... period. I finally know what my hair types are and what types of products will work best. Hair types: — high and medium porosity —fine thickness —high density Thank you for the aloe vera tip. Heavy oils have always weighed down my hair, so I would only use silicone serums. I am going to try your tips asap.

Kali Ferguson: This was sooo helpful! Thank you for showing pictures if the actual strands. It's too hard to tell your type when it's a full head of hair

Shavonne O: This was the best “hair typing” video I have ever seen!!! I have watched quite a bit, but you explained and had clear photos with each explanation! Loved it. I now see that I have 4B with some 4A textured hair. Thanks!

Eva Roovers: I'm white female with 1A hair but omg I lovee all the 4's hairstyles so beautifulll

Mrs. Giavonni Kenyatta: Best natural hair education video I’ve ever seen, you deserve 5 stars and endless likes, Sis .

Pocahontas: Thank you for explaining how hair type relates to length retention. So many people argue that it’s not genetics that play a role in hair length and that it’s about hair care and what products you use.

C G: I have been trying to figure this out for over 20 years. I can't figure it out for the life of me. You made this so simple to understand. Now I know I have 4a/4b (with 3c in my nape which is odd, but I always knew it was type 3c); thick, and low prorosity hair.

Kris Bogan: I’m post chemo and post radical hysterectomy so I don’t know what the heck is going on with it anymore lol. Having no estrogen changed it even more. I’ll just have to wait and see how it all pans out. For now I’m enjoying being bald-headed lol.

Hint of Ky: This was so helpful! Wow I think I have a combination of 4b/4c hair. It’s definitely thick and coarse (slightly thinner on the edges). I also have low porosity hair

Cece Diamant: I came to accept that i have all type 4 curl patterns on my head. The majority is what i like to call type 4b with 4a tendencies. And my edges and baby hairs (the naturally shorter hairs compared to the rest of my hair) are usually 4c, since they have very VERY tight coils. I also have coarse strands at the back of my head, and fine strands everywhere else. My hair also has normal porosity. Chances are you have more that one type on your head, which is fine. It confused me for the longest time but then through my own research it made me realise that we rarely fit in one sole box. We could have variations, and its completely normal. It definitely helped me understand my hair! :))

Antionette Johnson: Girl I don’t comment much but I had to. I love this video, it helped me figure out my hair type and texture just by watching and you know your sh** I I really appreciate you doing this whole heartedly. Now I know how to do my hair to retain the length. Please keep sharing you are helping people in so many ways. May God bless you you are a blessing in disguise ❤️

Yevette B.: 4b in center and 4c around the edges...low porosity, thick density, coarse textured, and curly/coily hair. I've had the most success with Aunt Jackie's products, Cantu, coconut oils, and lots of diy mask and recipes.

Stephanie Dic: Using definitions, examples and pictutes are what great tutorials are made of: this was great.

Amelia Fowler: 4C Coarse, thick, low porosity hair is what I have and am learning to live her. I have been using the entire Melanin line, minus the shampoo with great success as well as Camille Rose's Coconut Water detangler, Honey Hydrate and Curl Maker. I also use Mane Choice Tea Tree and Carrot Deep Conditioner and do treatments with Jamaican Black Castor Oil, Fenugreek oil and Bentonite Clay as well as a shea mixture and flaxseed get mixture I make. Yeah, it's a lot but, my hair is doing well and growing.

YAH'S Love: Wow I need help I thought I was 4c all this time. Lol had no clue I was 4A Thank you so much for the class. Also much love to ALL THE NATURAL TEXTURES . WE ROCK

chauntyse Oglesby: I am 45 years old and just now trying to transition out of relaxed hair and learning my "type" of hair. this 4C on my head has been soooooo difficult to accept and manage. now I have breakage. This video was very informative and will help me along my natural hair transition journey

Julia playys: This was soo educational for me. I have fine, thin, 4a hair. On the other hand, my baby girl has thick, low perosity, 4c hair. I’m in love with her hair! She’ll be able to do everything I was never able to.

Adicia Roberts: Thank you Breanna! Both of my daughters, granddaughter (of course), and my Mom at the time(rip) are natural, so I was kind of the odd woman out...Lol. I have multi-textures ranging from 3c-4c. I've only been natural for 7 months now after being relaxed since my jr high days starting with the jheri curl, then moving on to the perm. I tried to transition a few times but didn't like the different textures, especially when I wanted to get dolled up. I also knew that if I committed to going natural that I would have to big chop and I wasn't quite ready at the times I "tried", mainly due to not wanting to put forth the effort it took to maintain it. It wasn't until COVID and the sudden decline of my Mom's health that I decided to big chop, and I did it in such a way to where there would be no turning back. I sectioned my hair in four ponytail holders and chopped off the front first because I knew if I started at the back, i could still fix it if I changed my mind during the chop. It's been a process learning my hair textures and what products do and don't work best for me. As my hair has grown, I alternate between braids and wearing my natural curls. My girls are so shocked that I'm committed to my natural state. I love it and can honestly say that I'm not interested in relaxers at all anymore. I've listened to others in their natural journey but defaulted to YouTube, which has helped me a lot. This video has given me some much needed clarity on the different hair types and porosity. Thank you for the info and I enjoy watching your channel.

Yell0wCl0uds: Thank you for this video! I have been confused about my hairtype for so long! This really helped me

Michelle Wright: Thanks for the explanation, this was great. I had always heard the hair number values and never knew what they meant. I have a mixture of 4B and C. It's thick, course and sounds like low porosity.

Carolyn Rivers: You have given an excellent description of hair types from type to porosity. I have 4c thick coarse low porosity hair ( very coiled). I am wearing my hair natural, it looks about 1 inch long but when stretched out it about 31/2 to 4inches long. My hair just sucks up moisturizer, I am thinking of using Aunt Jackie products, would that be good for my type hair, Cantu products leaves my hair dry & flaky.

Kristina Marie: A lot of the “4a” hair pictures actually look like 3c

G1manime: You spoke my life. I definitely have the thick hair 4C. I know some parts is different than the other because when my mom used to braid it when I was younger, one side would braid smoothly and look tight while the other side she fought with and had that puffy or frizzy look.

Sephora KC: I have 4b hair and man the shrinkage is real! But then I loove it! I thank God for blessing me with such patterns 4B Medium density (thick and thin) Thin cours hair Medium porosity I use water, olive oil and jojoba oil, shea butter (makes my hair thick), aloe Vera and hair food pomade.

LaurieBug23: I'm a white girl with 2b hair, but I've always found type 4a, b and c types to be so beautiful! Thank you for teaching me about the different types!

Jewel Lee: Great video! One of the best I’ve seen! I think I have fine, low to medium density 4b/4a hair. I am still a bit confused about porosity but it could be because of my high density that my hair dries quickly ‍♀️

Kitt Fln: 4c hair. Touches my ears barely. But when stretched reached my butt. The shrinkage. Moisture is my issue

Liketa Phillips: Your hair is GORGEOUS, girl!!! How can I be down?! I have 4c type hair, I just found out last night! Nice! I love my hair texture!!! It took my whole life to appreciate it, better later then never! Keep up mother good work, love!!!

B An: You did an absolutely EXCELLENT job of explaining hair types. I have 4 B/C Fine, Thin hair of Medium/High Porosity.... Coconut oil and Avocado Oils work the best in my hair. Macademia Nut oil was ok but I think it was too light. Shea Butter cut from a block worked really well as long as I used a little bit. I live in Spain so it's hard to find it now.I like the way my hair feels when I use extra-virgin olive oil but of course, again, I can't use a lot as my hair is thin. It makes my hair so soft and manageable. Thanks again for your expertise!!!!!

Freda Young: I have 4a and 4b hair and they are very different my 4a hair is easier to define since it’s looser but harder gets tangled more then my 4b curls but my 4b curls are a little bit trickier but also easy! I love my hair types and I wouldn’t trade it for anything else!

Nat B: Currently transitioning and addicted to my curly roots! This clip is so helpful and clearly explained, thank you! I think I have either/both 4a and 4b hair..

OnlyLiric: I’m a 4B and everything you said is 100% accurate . Just been looking for the right products to really give my hair the shine and proper curl

Stay Ready Set: Thanks for explaining this. I have multiple hair types on my head. Which makes it tricky to figure out the right products to use. I'm finally learning how to manage my hair. Thanks!

SISANDA: This is one of the more detailed and engaging video's that I have seen. Thanks for making this! S/O from a South African sista living in the UK, the struggle is REEEAALL!

The Majik Manifesto: Thank you sista for breaking it down! Best hair video ever! I have thin density coarse high porosity type 4b/4c hair. You did an amazing job on helping a brotha! God bless! ❤️

French Fries: I combed a girls hair once. My elbows cracked, the comb snapped! I love this detailed video!

Alethia_ Lynn: Excellent content and descriptions! Not only helpful but more proud of my 4c hair ❤️ still needs to get it together but it’s a love hate relationship

Jennifer Dyer: I’m 4c in the crown, 4 b in my perimeter. It’s thin at my 50+ age However I love it. If it’s dry it looks very thick, but when went wet and curly the fineness shows. Thank you for helping me to know my hair

Brasil Saram: I think I’m mixture of 4a and 4b and quite a lot of heat damage around and on top. I started growing out mid 2020 but did quite a lot of straightening sep-Oct and it damaged again now I’m trying to get it back to how it was..

dannown: Thanks for such a clear and detailed explanation of hair types, and density and porosity. (I have type 1.)

Jodi-Ann Reid: This video was very informative. Thank you so much for sharing your valuable insight! I've been natural since 2014 and I learned more about my hair type in this 20-minute video than I have the past six years.

Anitakins: I love this video I have search to find my hair definition you got me down to a tee so now I can actually search for my hair type thoroughly, you are amazing Queen thank you for sharing this knowledge and all your videos, peace and blessings to you and yours

Lyn Charles: Male 4c, was balding and decided to destress to let my hair grow. It grew back faster (especially on the crown) and am working on managing the stress factors in my life rather than ignoring them to prevent another large hair breakout. Sadly 4c

Ladykyra101: Well done vid. As a 40+ year old woman, I've discovered that aging, diet and certain medications have affected my hair over the years. I've had to take supplements to restore hair balance. So, diet, the aging process, and medications/health conditions are all things to keep in mind when taking care of one's hair health.

Moyay Tyler: I have 4a/4b hair with low porosity. It’s very hard for me to keep my hair moisturized! In fact I find it easier to manage when I don’t wash it as much. Heavy moisture products works wonders for my hair and leave in conditioners. I like Cantu. Virgin Olive oil works like a charm on my hair as well because it helps my hair retain moisture. My hair literally sucks up grease super fast and takes forever to Dry. Even when people Think it’s Dry when they’re doing my hair, it don’t be. I love it though! Fine texture and haven’t had a Perm in about 10 years!

Jacinta Walker: Loved this video! Very informative !!! I’ve been natural for about 7 years and usually keep my hair braided because I can’t style it. I have 4b/4c hair

NaNa LEBANON BOMB: I’m half white & half arab and have thick, fine hair. Growing up my hair was way tighter, probably in the 3b-3c range. As i got older it went to a 2c-3a range. I’ve been braiding my hair and others my whole life (the hair of others is in the 4 range) and never knew these scales. So helpful! Especially, the part about moisture retention! Thank you

Angela Celeste May: I remember seeing your video sometime ago and liked it, but I don't recall if I commented. So I'll comment now by saying that this video is one of the best,, most informative, most thorough, clearest (with side-by-side examples) presentations that I have ever seen on hair typing, texted differences, Etc. Excellent excellent job! You helped me at long last figure out what my hair type is. A proud 3c (in the back I think)/4a/4b thick, course, low porosity lady over here! Keep up the great work.

Chorrell Piqué: Thank you very much, Breanna. A video that actually provided me with some useful information.

sheila grayman: Absolutely, 4C hair has GOT the MAGIC WAND!

HemiGirl: I’m glad I watched this and discovered why I can’t keep a hair style for more than two days. The whole time I’m thinking it’s because I’m using the wrong products ‍♀️. Now I can stop being a product junky and accept this defeat.

Gacha Queen: FINALLY ALL THE GIRLS IN MY CLASS WILL STOP TALKING ABOUT HOW THEIR HAIR IS 4C WHEN ITS CURLY!!! I did cheer and one of the girls was CONFUSED why my hair wasnt slicking back and she was like its not that hard you just don't takr care of your hair. And that was 1 untrue and she had 3c hair so.... And this one horrible day I walk into class only to see a girl over here saying oh yea ur hairs 4c and all. I was so mad bc I did have 4c and I felt SO insecure bc theirs was SO CURLY and I felt like mine was constantly damaged... But all's good!

God's Treasure: THANK YOU. YOU DID A VERY GOOD JOB EXPLAINING OUR HAIR TYPES YOU’RE SO CORRECT. 4C HAIR IS REALLY GOOD AT HOLDING DIFFERENT CURLY, COILY STYLES AND LOC’S. WHAT A FUN, CELEBRATORY VIDEO.

Sandra April: I love how she explains every point! Makes me feel like I really understood my hair

Tee Tanee': This was really helpful I have 2 daughters and 1 has 4A & my oldest daughter have 4b and mine is a mixture of 4A,b, AND C and now Ik thanks for this my sister has 4c and I wish I could keep the styles she can get

Lana Doll: I’m 4C all day and when i was loose natural it was a nightmare for me… locking my hair was better for me now I have some true hang time! 9.5 months loc’d! ❤️

Liyah.x: I have 4c hair and I used to (still do) want 4b or 4a because of the length and I will admit I’m jealous cause y’all get to wear your natural hair out and about and mine has to stay in braids

Jakeline Vaz: Great video. Now I understand my son's hair better. I'd love tips for products for high porosity, 4A, thin, fine hair please. My son has this type of hair and I'm trying to learn how to care for it. Appreciate it!

NikNicOnNYC: Breanna, this is a great video, but I would suggest you linger more on the images, reverting to voice over, as opposed to showing yourself so much. It was hard to study all of the hair types you so beautifully are describing because you kept cutting back to yourself too fast. Thank you for this great content, nonetheless. You have done a good job.

Chris Avii: I have 4B hair, however the front is 4A. Growing up, I hated my hair because of the shrinkage, and how it was so hard to do. However, now I am in love with my hair, and I love being natural, and above all, I love being a black woman♥️

lena emmitt: Hey breanna. My hair is 4c (completely)with medium porosity. I have an issue with my hair at the crown growing at the same rate as the rest of my hair. I have been using castor oil for the past 3 months; it has made it fuller. Do you have any suggestions for what I can do to get it growing right? I really want a head full of lengthy 4c hair. HELP?!

Bianca Bennett: Best explanation I have seen. I finally think I have a good understanding of my hair type and texture. Thanks!

Snow Puff74: Well detailed video, but I have a different perspective regarding 4A hair type. It was mentioned that this hair type is close to the actual length. I'm thinking this applies to someone with length not shorter hair. My hair is approximately 8 inches in length, but since my hair has no weight and I have low density hair, it shrinks to 50% of its actual length. I think there are some exceptions with afro hair because it varies so widely with texture, patterns, density, the list goes on. However this video is great and provides a lot of useful information. To know your true curl pattern, wash and condition your hair. Use a microfiber towel or t-shirt to blot dry your hair,, try not manipulate the hair.. let your hair air dry with no product in the hair. When it's almost dry look to see how your hair curls or kinks. This will tell you your true curl pattern, not when your hair is wet. Everyone's hair looks fabulous when wet,, but dry is a whole different thing.

Carlita Miller: I love, love, love your video. The Best video that explains type 4 hair, and I finally understand porosity. . Thank you . I believe my hair is a mixture of 4b and 4c.

RedWriterGrl: Found this and subbed immediately! 4b/4c all day. Thick/Coarse. Medium porosity. Lol I hit em all! And the struggle is real! I use heavy butters, raw african shea and cocoa. And the heavier oils argan, avocado, olive. Medium cream bases and light misting sprays. Aloe vera stay on lock and acv to clarify.

Justine Bella: I used to relax my hair to avoid combing pain but everything changed 7 moths ago when I got to know that it's possible to take care of 4c hair I am loving my hair than ever.

Akia Thornhill: My hair is multi textured curly 3c in front, 4a-4c. Extremely coily Medium porosity in front and sides Low porosity in middle and back. My hair can take 3 hours under the dryer and 2 days to air dry. I have thick, coarse, soft hair. My hair doesn't tangle easily. I can't put my hair in a ponytail. I have to do a faux puff. Been natural since 2012 transition in 2011. Big chop 2017

Midnight Galaxy: I always thought I had 4c hair for so long. Turns out I was 4b all along! Thanks for the advice

Elsie Thorne: Girl am so glad I found you, I have all three combination, and you don't want me to tell you my problems, but now that I know what is my hair type I can begin to work with it, thank you

jalana hinshaw: I think I'm a mix between 3c in the front, and 4a/4b everywhere else. And medium to high porosity. And my shrinkage is real! Looks like my hair hasn't grown, until its wet or stretched out when its dry. I'm 2 years natural and its taken me that long to figure my hair out lol. And I'm still learning.

Born of Love: Years and years of trying to figure this wll out and your 1 video makes it all so simple. Excellent job ans thank you. Now to figure out 1. How to care for it 2. What products work best. Thanks again! This video made me a subscriber.

lorna reece: Love this video thank you for being so through! I have no idea what my hair type is ,! Now on to the testing
