4 Different Foil Placement Techniques & Effects by Mirella Manelli | Kenra Professional

#foilplacement #hairhighlights #haircolortutorial #howtohair #hairstylists

Hey everyone, its Marella manelli and in today's hair tutorial, I'm gon na show you four different foil placements and the effects they create on the hair, so stay tuned and check it out to get started on our highlights. I went ahead and sectioned this mannequin into four quadrants, so right down the middle and then from ear to ear, creating four sections. This bottom section right down here from the occipital down. I went ahead and braided it because we're not gon na be doing any highlights on it. So this is just gon na give me a nice controlled, clean area to work with, so this doesn't get in the way this video is all about placements and the effects that they can cause in the placement of the highlights. So, for example, I'm gon na be doing horizontal sections right in through here and then vertical sections and then for the front two sections we're gon na be doing a diagonal forward and diagonal back for this project. I'M using Kenner professionals simply blonde blue powder Lightner. At a 1-2-3 mixing ratio with 30 volume developer, this is typically my go-to Lightner for all highlights. But of course, you're gon na want to customize your Lightner to your client's needs for the purpose of showing you the four different placements and the effects they create. I'M gon na be taking slices in each of the sections for this first quadrant, I'm going to show you horizontal sections with slices. You will see that this is going to create lots of diffusion. Horizontal highlights are great for general, highlighting overall brightness high diffusion, natural-looking highlights and color correction. Remember that horizontal placement is going to create the illusion of fullness and weight in your color. So if you are working with heavily layered hair, you will see a line of demarcation where the highlight ends. It'S important for you to note each of the subsections you are creating while doing highlights for demonstration purposes. I am taking half inch sections in between my foils. If you want to create lots of Blondin blending and brightness, you will want to take smaller subsections if you want to create a very natural effect or higher contrast with a deeper background for more depth. Wider subsections are essential, in addition to subsections and placement. How you apply your highlight is going to make a difference as well. So, for example, if you go in with baby lights, a chunky highlight or even a teasing light, you'll create different effects, but you're still creating fullness weight and diffusion with the placement. So keep this in mind, as you were learning different placements in this video and how you should customize your placement and application for each client on the Left quadrant on creating vertical highlights. These can sometimes be challenging to apply. However, they create stunning ribbon effects in the hair and give the illusion of link I'm still taking slices in this quadrant. So you can see the full effect of the placement. However, just like I mentioned in the horizontal segment, the type of technique used in the placement will vary for your end result. Vertical placement is used and great for creating high contrast, diffusing the stopping point of your highlights when working with heavily layered hair and giving the illusion of longer looking hair. Some tips when applying vertical highlights is work in small sections for maximum control. Tension is key for holding your foil in place while applying and choose the side that you feel most comfortable working on first, since all of your foils will be laying in the same direction while you are applying, and one last thing is - have lots of duckbills on Hand to help you hold your foils in place just remember that when applying vertical foils you're creating the maximum amount of contrast for the front quadrants, I will be doing the same diagonal placement except that in the front left quadrant, I'm applying diagonal forward sections and on The other side they are diagonal back. This placement will create two effects, depending on how your client wears her hair, whether it's towards her face or away from her face. You will either create high contrast with diffusion, which means you will see a difference between the highlights and the depth, but the line of where they start will be softer than with the vertical highlights, or you will create diffusion with soft contrast, depending on how the slice Veils over since this placement lives between vertical and horizontal, you are getting the best of both worlds. However, the direction of forward or back fall is very important on how your client wears her hair and what end result you want, for example, if your client wears her hair towards her face diagonal forward will create more diffusion than placing them diagonal back. You will see the difference in each of these placements once the hair is finished and styled and here's the final result on the different boiling placements and the effects that they create. So let's go ahead and recap what we did on this mannequin head. So on this side over here this is a pretty typical, horizontal foil placement. You have lots of blondie and lots of blending, so overall it looks rather blond. So I see a lot of stylists do this technique and we kind of know what it creates. You can see this would be if somebody wanted a nice overall blondie effect. Now in this section over here, we did more of a vertical placement. So in this section you can really almost kind of see these really defined highlights really creating more of a ribbon effect. So when you go in and curl this, let's go ahead and take a piece out. You can really see almost kind of like a chunk if that makes sense, so we were to go in and really create a really tight curl we're gon na have this long pop of blonde poking through just like a ribbon, would show on the hair. Now, on the right side of her head, we went in with diagonal back sections, so this actually gives a really nice blended effect. If you're gon na wear the hair towards the face, but look what happens when we bring this back? You can really see these stripes of blonde because we went in in this fashion now, of course, this can change, depending on the type of highlight you put in so keep in mind we did put in slices, but this gave a really nice blended effect going diagonal Back and for the opposite side of her head, we went in with diagonal forward sections, so we took the sections going in this direction. So what this created is lots of pop of blonde, almost similar to ribbon effect with the vertical highlights created, but with a much more blended version of the vertical highlights. So what you can see is if she what she wears her hair forward, what this is going to create is nice ribbons of blonde, with lots of contrast versus the other side had much more blended effect, so you can really kind of take these two different techniques. Here towards the front and really customize it, depending on how your client wears her hair, whether it's forward or away from her face or if she wants a blended effect or lots of contrast. So I really hoped you enjoyed this hair tutorial and I hope you learned something new and if you did, I would love to know what it is so subscribe like and comment down below and let me know which technique is your favorite. So until next time

Jeninne Ware: Honestly, this was the visual and aural explanation I needed in school when I learned about highlighting. Had amazing instructors but this video was absolutely perfect in every way, answered everything!

Nikochic: I’m a new stylist and just opened up my salon. I love these types of tutorials because they help me enhance my skills. Thank you and more please. I like Kenra products, but I’ll like to understand their color lines better.

Christine V: I got highlights today and the girl did something I’ve never seen any time I got highlights . I thought she was doing it wrong and it was going to come out horrible . She didn’t weave the hair. She separated the hair just like you. It came out great !

Tam Nguyen: Hello Erica I just want to let you know that you are very clear and detailed on technique and verbally. Thanks

Cathy Howell: Very valuable info! Thanks for simplifying these techniques. I just have 1 question. I wear my hair up in a bun most of the time so I would choose to use the diagonal forward technique on my front sections because the highlights look more blended, but I prefer the look of the diagonal back technique when the hair is worn down. So, could I start with diagonal forward sections at the bottom (closest to the ear and then switch to diagonal back sections as I get up towards the part? It would be tricky but I think it could be done. What do you suggest?? Thanks, Cat

Erica Gaitan: I am looking into pursuing my career choice in cosmetology because I love working with hair but I do have a hard time understanding the whole process on the different types of blonde looks and styles. Since I went to cosmetology school, I haven't had too much experience because I did not continue to pursue my career choice considering I was young and not thinking straight. Now I am a mother of a 1 year old and I want to do my best in life. You are SO GREAT! This was so helpful to me! After seeing so many videos this one has helped me the MOST to simply UNDERSTAND the foil placements are the key to the type of blonde effect you are trying to accomplish. Your teaching is direct information perfectly informed visually and verbally. I literally don't even have any questions! It is an "Aha moment" for me! I appreciate you! THANK YOU❤

Erin Ryann Moran: I have been in the hair world for almost 20yrs now, and I have to say that was a great video! I think stylists like myself love videos that bring us back to the basics and adopt them as our own and pretty much make hair magic! When we get excited about our clients hair they get into it and love their hair that much more! I think they way you displayed how the sections look based on the Technique and placement! Thank you and keep them coming!

Tiffany Brink: This is such a great video!!!! Thank you so much ☺️

Coco Jones: OMG you are Amazing! so I love the way you give the tools, tips, and tricks 100% Ive been doing hair for 8 years and thanks for refresher. Thank You so much

Naomi Tapper: After the relaxer for 2 weeks, I am going to hairdressers to dye permanent hair colour by using natural black, then wash out with shampoo and blow-dry. Also, have natural blonde highlights full head by using foils, then wash out with shampoo, have conditioning treatment, blow-dry and style my hair. Hopefully, this will grow out and make it look nice for my friend's wedding next year!

joeljack1: This was really informative. Of course everything here is super wearable. Thank you!

Lisa Green: This was the most helpful video I've seen for slicing! I would love to see more from you. Do you have diagrams?

29:11: But how do you go about updating the slices? One could try to use same slices, but then this might be tedious. Or one could just strat new and have some old half slices and news, but then you might have to use different strength lightener or only apply to some then go back and reapply. Either way it seems more difficult to work with a line of demarcation on slices than weaving.

M J: You are such a great educator! Thank you!!!

Pablo Rosalez: I understand highlights a lot better now . Thank you , looking forward to seeing more of your tutorials

Anthony Purcaro: I watched your video again great I’m so impressed I could never get enough information you are wonderful hairstylist and teacher thanks again Anthony

Jennifer Dula: Wow! I wish I had seen this before I paid $200 to get my daughter’s hair highlighted for her 13th birthday! I know nothing about hair, but feel the full highlight I paid for is not what we received! Your mannequin had more foils on her head in the first three minutes than my daughter with waist long hair had within the first 15 minutes in the chair! And her highlights do not look as blended. I asked questions throughout the entire process like, “shouldn’t there be more in the back?” But was told she’s the professional and it will all come together once finished. Agree to disagree: she is the professional, but to me, full highlights means the color will be throughout all layers, not just the top half of her head. Now, even more disappointed at our first experience, however, thankful I now know what to look for and truly expect IF I can afford this experience in the future thanks to your informational tutorial! Heck, almost confident I can do a better job myself with the help of your video than the $200 experience I just paid for.

Pablo Edgar Gómez: Wow eres extraordinaria. Excelente.. Gracias

Andres Valencia: Thanks for the video. Very helpful.

Brooke Cioffi: When I do slices and paint to the top of the foil like that without feathering I get bleeds. What am I doing wrong? Because this seems much faster and there are no bleeds. At least that I can see. Sometimes even weaving I get bleeds. Is my foil placement and hold lacking? I dunno

Frisco divas salon: Love it

DARIO ALEJANDRO MORENO: Muy buen trabajo

Jessica: This is perfect!!

Clairerbella beaner: This is a fabulous video very helpful

Whitney Roberts: Best explanation I’ve seen!!!

Rosanna Estay: I love it! I'm going to do it.. Thanks.

Talia Olvera: Wow great explanation

Kaaj Al: Very helpful video. Thanks for showing

August Vukosovich: I like the technique of pulling small sections and using a cattail comb and weaving the hair, it looks very natural. I apologize for saying this but those highlights look very chunky and very unnatural. Of course, if this is what your client wants, then it's fine.

showercurtainyo: Thanks for this. I need to tell my stylist to do diagonal around my face. I hate how the horizontal foils look around my face

almaramena: I really love diagonal back forward, can you make the video with balayage technique?

All Lies BStrong: Excellent!!! I learned what to ask for and if I have to touch up I can with a little better direction.

Pam: What I don’t understand is how the first section doesn’t burn and break off. My hairstylist starts out with a different type of formula or something and then changes it up two more times as she goes so everything comes up at the same time ‍♀️ I am no stylist but I was just curious

Cassondra Octavia: Amazing! Communication of Techniques

zrtasha Bilal: Hi Erica, I want to know reasons about the red tone after cut down at home even on virgin hair.

Maria Fontana - Business Growth Made Easy: Great video! Thanks for sharing!
