Why This Haircut Costs $1,000

Hair stylist Julien Farel's $1,000 haircut is a transformation that celebrities like Kate Moss and Celine Dion can't get enough of. His full Power Hour treatment is an extra $500 and gets you a manicure, pedicure, hair color, and, of course, Champagne. Insider's Emily Christian is on a mission to find out why celebs are shelling out over $1,000 for a haircut. She chats with Julien about how a haircut is set apart from the rest when it complements the architecture of the face.

Editor's note: A previous version of this video implied that our host paid $1,000 for the haircut herself. In fact, Insider paid a discounted media rate for the experience. We regret the error.

Why This Haircut Costs $1,000

Hey guys, It's Emily, and today I'm headed to the Julien Farel Salon to get a $ 1,000 haircut., That's right, $ 1,000 for a haircut and that's before the full Power Hour Treatment, which includes getting my hair colored and my nails done.. So obviously, this is outside of my price range, but celebs, like Kate Moss, have gotten the cut.. My main goal for the day is to investigate. Why and how this haircut could be worth so much money.. We met with Julien Farel himself in the VIP room of his salon in New York. City. Emily Well Julien, I'm so excited to be here. Today.. Thank you! So much.. I can't wait for you to just transform me., I'm glad you came.. You have the best hair.! Thank you. The best face and the best eyes. Emily You're. Wonderful, thank you.. So this part here Right now, you're closing down. Mhm. We're going to reopen it.. I love the length and I'm glad you say you haven't cut it for three months. Love it., But we're going to make this part to make sure that your eyes and cheekbones can really highlight.. And you know hair is all about proportion. Okay. And what we do. We build a volume into a space., The head is a space and we have to build a volume around it.. So we're going to make you look like a movie star. And I have to ask your professional opinion about something.. Do you like the bangs? I do.? Okay, good., But let me tell you. We're going to change the bangs. You're going to change my bangs, Because the bangs right now, it's almost too quiet. Too shy. Okay. Julien. So we need to have a bangs who's like a a little bit more like a like. Almost like a curtain, bangs. Uh huh. To make sure that they embrace your beauty. Emily Well wonderful.. I cannot wait. It's a deal. A deal Absolutely. Good. Emily For $ 1,000 Julien promises clients to bring out their natural features., But there's more than one reason he charges a full grand for his services.. Today my haircut is $ 1,000.. It'S because A I have very little time. Number. Two is because, when I do a haircut, you don't need to come every two weeks to do it.. Unless you want to. For a woman, the hair can grow for six months. And the hair will be cut from A to Z, where there's always a line for the volume grow. Together. Emily - And I wasn't just at the Julien Farel Salon for the haircut. I had signed up for the full Power Hour Treatment, including color, and a mani-pedi, which is a favorite package deal for the salon's celebrity clients.. Oh, is this for me Wow.. I feel like a princess.. I'Ve never felt like this before.. This is the Power Hour and it feels powerful.. I sat down everyone just swooped in and we just started. It's fantastic. Emily. I'Ve never had this. Many people pamper me at the same time.. So someone who's like a celebrity or something. This is how they feel all the time Senior Colorist Yes. Emily I began to realize. I had no idea what was actually happening to my hair. Julien and his team had taken one look at me and swooped me in to transform me based on their expert opinions.. As I lay back in the Italian massage chair, it was becoming clear that I wasn't only paying for the ultimate luxury salon day., But I was also able to fully put my trust in the hands of top-notch professionals.. So at 14 I start hair. And what I really learn is when is when I understand like geometry. And I never went to school, but I was extremely good in math. And when I understood a haircut is about architecture. It'S about the geometry in space. I became fascinated about it., Mostly what happens when you leave the hairdresser? You love it., You look so amazing. It'S big it's great. And then you go home, it's like and now what So, it's very important to understand how to do the layer., How to actually adjust the layer to make sure that you got the lift. But you don't take away the length from the bottom., Because if we want to keep the length we don't want to have strangly hair as well. Emily. So when I go home, this is going to be so that I can manage it better. Julien. I want you to love it tomorrow: too. Emily Yeah., (, laughs, ) Julien, You know. Julien, I layer from short to long. Emily. How should a good haircut make someone feel Julien Well you're, going to tell me. ( Emily laughs ). So now I'm going to make you stand. Please Sure.'Cause! When you stand your two feet touch the ground at the same time and you're not crooked. Emily Wow.. I can already tell it's going to look phenomenal.. I cannot wait., I'm so happy. Julien Remember to blow dry. The bangs forward. Not going back. Emily Yeah., Not toward. Emily, So instead of in out., Okay, that's blowing my mind.. That is something I never thought to do before and it looks so good.. Somehow it looks longer. Like my hair, almost. Julien. The volume has changed. Emily Yeah, it's unbelievable. My face feels like it changed. I feel like alive. I feel like I can see myself. Just oh my goodness.. I have so much to go. Do now., I feel like I have to go, do everything.? Okay, so it has been about a month since my haircut with Julien, and I would just like to say I am sorry Julien.. I put my bangs right back in front., But I would also like to say that I have been having consistently some of the best hair days of my life.. I wake up in the morning and my hair falls naturally in a way that I absolutely love and I've never been able to say that before.. So while the changes in my haircut were subtle., I really feel like it brought out the best of my hair that I've ever seen. The volume is growing out.. My hair is bigger than I've ever seen. It fall naturally before, and people can definitely notice that I've done something just a little different, but they aren't quite sure what.. When people say why pay $ 1000 for subtle changes, I can totally see why celebrity clients would come to Julien and want to look just like the best version of themselves without looking like they've done a whole lot to really change.. I feel like my hair has never just looked better as it is, and I've always struggled with loving my hair.. So I'm definitely looking forward to spending many many more months with this haircut. Just enjoying how it's growing out before. Finally, returning to my normal everyday salon,

Moubarka Tv2: He's a con artist, and that's, ladies and gents, is a type of art To fool people and act as if you know what you're doing and put together the accent with the right set words and vocabulary. The dude needs an Oscar!

Momo UwU: The champagne costs $50. Use it to drunken the client and convince her that the haircut costs $1000. STONKS

BrainLoading: Women haircuts : $300 no changes Men haircuts : $30 from homeless to Hollywood Star

Hamada Zeko: 0:50 I'm 100% positive he said that line to all his clients..

hellaSwankky: damn. $1k for her hair to look just as basic, thin, + lifeless in the end as it did in the beginning. poor girl.

Julie Breezy Jayan: He basically curled her hair. Thats it for 1 grand

abhinav kamal: 6:14 She is trying so hard to convince herself that it was worth 1k.

Ihtesham Emon: Some points: - He takes $1000 for a haircut but his own hairs looks gurbage - He never goes to school but extremely good at mathematics - He started giving her praises at first look - She feels alive after getting the haircut but we feel she looks worse - It's the money that's giving the sensation not the style

Painted Black: Julien: "You have the best hair, best face and best eyes"... that'll be 1k

HighHell99: 3:45 "I never to school but I was extremely good at math" Heck yeah you were.

APOORV NAYAK: Imagine if he shaved her hair and ran away.

lanietalk: Everything expensive is just a falsely inflated market. People always compliment my hair and I cut it myself with hair scissors lol. That hair made her look older

Pog Bitch: You know damn well the company regretted paying $1000 for her hair to look the exact same.

Joelle's life: I pay 10$ for my haircut and i have beautiful hair, paying 1000$ is dumb

BongWater: Damn I'm gonna have to start using the "I have very little time" excuse on my customers

Nadine m: This makes me want to get a job at insider, buzzfeed, etc to get to try out expensive things for free

rdpcl: This is exactly why I don't like to pay a lot for a haircut: it looks amazing only if you style the hair.

: haircuts from the Philippines ranges from $1 to $10, and expensive ones like to charge up to $18

Eddie Gamez: My girl carla in harlem can do the exact same thing and she'll tell you all the tea about her husband's good endowment. Because that's customer sevice.

Hasan Ul Kabir-4: Hair cut price Champagne: 15$ Hair cut: 10$ Compliment: 200$ French accent:775$

Ikenna Bede: After haircut: I feel alive, my hair is longer. Me: no girl, it's the bottle of champagne

linxxy _ cl: he literally just gave her emo hair

Hanah Welch: the compliments come with a price

Ru Okay?: 5:09 it’s a thousand dollars? Then why is he using a dinky poorly coloured and clearly plastic.. *brush*

James Martinez: Nothing done yet: “ I feel like a princess”

Earth to Tara: Here I was thinking that included the color and mani-pedi. That would almost be worth it. I pay $400-600 for my cut, style, & color, so it makes sense to me that a celeb stylist would charge $1k. But for a cut alone? HELL NO. I wouldn't pay above $200 for a cut alone and even then I would be outraged!

Rosie Day: As someone in the industry (i'm an esthetician) it's interesting to see people who have just -okay- skills able to charge so much. I think it's mostly their attitude??

rizal: 1K gets you champagne, new haircut and compliments from a very busy guy who looks like Roberto Mancini

Tate Jones: “I layer from short to long” We were all thought that in hair school...

Zainab Rehman: I'm telling you The only reason it costs so much is because of his french accent

jai peterson: Me: Asks for a raise because I have "very little time"

scrappy mom: I feel sad for people who think that the best things have to be expensive. It's just hair. It's constantly changing. Go get a decent cut for a reasonable price and spend your hard earned money on something that lasts.

Khushi Raizada: There are 3 types of people Type 1: hears about $1,000 haircut and says too expensive and forgets about it Type 2. Hears about the haircut facilities and goes for regardless of price Type 3- realizes the cos is expensive and still goes for it to figure out why its expensive Then there's me watches the video regardless of no intention of haircut

wabi-sabi: "I never took a geometry class".. *him every time he cuts a straight line* And 5:22 is me every time, realizing how disappointed I am in my haircut but feeling so obligated to pretend I LOVE it because of all the work they put in to give me everything but the haircut I actually wanted lol

Tasha Glam: I'll change the title of this video: *I wasted $1000 on a haircut I could've gotten for $30*

Regina Rodriguez: Hi. My uncle is a hairdresser, so I get all my haircuts for free unless it’s for a school dance or a wedding or a big change. Then he’ll charge me fifteen bucks. If I asked him to do what this guy did to the lady’s hair, I’d get a haircut for free

Stringbeanplepeda: We have to remember that his idea worked. It may be underhanded but he's making the big bucks. We should learn from him.

TirednSnarky: My haircut costs $300 and I leave it to grow out over 2 - 3 years. I've only seen my hair dresser like 8 times in the last 20 years. He offers free maintenance services but I never take him up on it.

Tahera Tarannum Siddiqui: honestly i've seen a lot of videos on instagram where hairdresses are really great and totally transform the custommer and cost less than this

sewergoblins: i’ve sat through 7:30 minutes of this and they still haven’t answered why it costs so much

Star✨: Before the video: I can't wait to see.. After the video: I just literally wasted my time to see this..

Alfred Walthamstow Johnson: me: i need a pay raise my employer: why? me: because i have very little time

kkimberly2004: It looked amazing and even though you didn't maintain the look it still looks really good.

Arleen Hammersla: "I charge $1000 because I have very little time..." OMG...I have been cutting and coloring my own hair for 6 years and do a better job, and I am always happy. I used to go to a snooty salon to get a crappy haircut and regret it for a month. No more.

Kaash Kaash: After 15 glasses of champagne: "I feel alive!"

hellaSwankky: “i’ve been having some of the best hair days...” girl. why you didn’t put those pictures in the video?!

Keerthana: after one wash, her hair be like : Ta-da! I'm back

The Kennedy Curate: "I want you to love it at home too." -- that's why he charges $1k. It's not just about the salon experience but the fact that this style takes her through her daily life after she's left. He provided a transformation... not just a hair cut. (Just my two cents!)

Carissa Montier: Y’all I think that the hair looks great and he prices based on his talent and not your wallet. Even though I don’t have 1000$ for a haircut, I would totally do this because as she has said, he cuts each client’s hair to fit them personally!

Beatrice Z: The most expensive haircut I've ever had was less than $15 USD from a professional salon, I got a nice hair wash and a head massage, beverages and an after treatment for my hair.

Katie M.: Am I the only one who genuinely liked the haircut? Like I was pleasantly surprised, as most of these celebrity hairstyles usually end up ruining people's hair.

Sole Gonz: She's blonde, white as snow, & blue eyed. Girl- you look good already- you just needed to lean into your blonde more. Glad you feel 1000%. As for the rest of us divas on on budget- learn about your hair. I was blessed to live 1 block away from an amazing beauty school. I had my hair cut pixie, dyed red, hair lights, dyed chocolate brown, & I've even grown my hair out 18 inches & did the Japanese straightening. Have fun! ...Wisely. I spent a total of $1k at that school after 3 y-e-a-r-s of treatments & blow outs- that beauty school did waxing, makeup & Murad facials. I also felt really good after doing my low budget self care

View: He has his own technique and I guess it's the best place to uncover our hidden look that's never been revealed. I would like to try, but honestly still need to save some money for it.

Sudhay: She paid $1000 to look the same and get flattered by a Frenchman.

RayOfDarkness: I've never paid more than 10 dollars for a haircut lmao, if I asked for something that costs more than that than my mom wouldn't let me cut my hair at all lmao

Pornima Warke: Hit like if you agree , "IT DID NOT WORTH $1000"

Tate Jones: This is literally the perfect example of how people see things differently because of how much they’re paying. Guarantee if she payed $100 for this cut and color she’d just be like meh whatever

ChickenSushi: My hair costs $180 on average and that’s because of the amount of product it actually takes for what I like. 1 grand is insane. My hair takes 3 hours to even finish and I’m not paying anywhere near that.

Ahmed Elshiekh: imagine if everyone gets paid more just because "they have very little time"

4gma59: As a former hairdresser who stopped doing hair in 1987: I could have given you this for $50. He's great at cuts, but: It's all in the marketing.

occy999: something to be said for the guy, he taught her how to look after the hair, which is very particular to the type of hair, which average salons don't do (partially because they want you to have better looking hair on the day you came out of the salon than when you do it yourself) is it worth $1000 maybe not but it did make her hair look better, that money would be split between a bunch of people who looked after her, rent which is probably insane to provide this kind of service in a place celebrities could easily access. there are plenty of reasons why this isn't actually over price, its just a different world. (also he's French lol)

La Corneille: Most people could do this at home in 4-6 hours. If we're going to get mathematical I'll break it down: $10 (one tube of professional color) $15 (hair lightener) $7 (hair color developer) $3 (small bottle of scalp protector) $10-20 (hair/body oil to protect hair during service, and prep the hands for a manicure and pedicure) $10 (hair accessories like clips, pins and etc to use during service) $10 (salon cape) $2 (hair caps) $20-50 (professional manicure/pedicure kit) $20-40 (nail polish kit, e.g. nail color, base coat, top coat, cuticle oil, nail hardener) $10-75 (face oil kit) $10-30 (cotton, disposable makeup applicators) $20-50 (salon shears kit) $75-100 (professional hair dryer with attachments) $40-100 (professional curling and flat irons) $50 (hair protector products) $30-50 (aromatherapy misting kit) $10-50 (1 bottle of champagne or any other drink, depending on personal tastes) $75-200 (1 hour massage) Grand total (on the pricey side) is $900. If you use budget and price point products, you can bring it to $700. Perhaps you can split these costs with friends if y'all decide to do a beauty in day at home. Just remember proper sanitation should you go this route. In the end, you have to decide if saving $200-300 is worth it for you. People spend good money on cosmetologists and estheticians for a reason. No one likes to be out of $1K, but some careers call for this level of maintenance like actors, performers, high-level executives, strippers, and anybody else who depends on their looks for a living. Also, it takes more work to look like you did nothing to your hair and skin than achieving a more dramatic look that is unsustainable in the end. That's where you need to use math to figure out the perfect colors to use to enhance one's natural features and skin tone. I speak from personal experience. Doing a soft hair lightening (on myself) with combed in natural highlights, ends trim with haircut, and deep conditioning is a two-part process that can take 4-6 hours split over a few days. And I'm a natural kind of girl. If I was more high-maintenance, we'd be looking at 7-10 hours of work split over a few days (I do have to work $$$ to make it all happen). If she is happy with her softly natural results, good for her! In the end, it's the experiences that are imprinted in your heart ❤️. ‍♀️✂️

Franny P.: Does a shag and a curtain bangs with a flair or champagne really costs a grand?! My goodness! I can already use that to accomplish so much in a day. Even the most luxurious salons here in Manila doesn't charge a grand for the entire service. Even those top notch people in the hair industry here doesn't really charge that kind of extravagance to their VIP clients. I will only spend 50-250 bucks for my hair and for me thats already a luxury.

Sctsce Duwn: I just love how everything expensive in this channel is roasted.

El Marco: Honestly, I’ve worked in award winning salons that charge far less. His cutting technique is trash…you aren’t supposed to cut over the knuckle. Also lining up her fringe while it’s not blow dried is a crime

Meme Unicorn: Him: “ i never went to school but I am good at math” Me:

Samantha Moran: $1000 for a haircut that doesn’t come with a personal daily glam squad is certifiably insane. Especially to not look any better

Christine Daley: I have never paid more than 80 dollars for a haircut, and usually I pay about 20. Before kids I would pay 150 every couple of weeks for a cut ,full foils and an eyebrow wax and that price included a 20 percent tip.I am sure it would cost more now, maybe 250.I am not sure I would pay that even if I could afford it.

Fabiana Benites: His first excuse was: “um, I charge 1k bc I have little time”... So technically, he ain’t charging for the hair cut itself, but for his time as a celebrity hair dresser.. she could’ve gotten the same exact hair cut much cheaper from a hair dresser who isn’t getting paid to get their ego boosted over their service. He basically charged that much bc he has “little time” aka: I am important, and if you want me you better pay for it. Idk, this feels more like narcissism to me on his part than anything.

Tanvi B.: Here's trick, 5$ for actual haircut and remaining $995 for saying 'Best', salary of his staff, champagne and his debts!

pathetic mortal: Here I thought it was going to be $1000 for hair, nails, pedi and champagne which is still over priced. But no, I was even more disgusted to see its all separate prices

Dr. Fill: He's not only a genius artist, but he's also a genius when it comes to sales.

festivelady826: I'm all about splurging on beauty treatments, hair cuts, etc., but there is NO haircut in the world that is worth $1000. I was paying $200 in the '90's in Houston, but that was color and cut. It was well worth it, but I wouldn't spend a thousand dollars if I was a billionaire. That is wasteful. She's so excited because she's had 10 glasses of champagne.

Cutie Oui: The whole time i am just feeling the guilt and regret of how much money she had lost for just an hour.. I’d probably not gonna enjoy this moment if i were her, i would feel miserable from start to finish and beyond

A L: The only reason he is able to charge that much is because of the french accent and he is stylish.

Panda: That wasn’t that good to be honest and her hair was so messy after he styled her hair. I’m glad my mom is a celebrity hairstylist from my country and she does amazing haircuts and very precise too. She cuts her own hair as well and her hair looks amazing always.

Khushi Nashine: Am i the only one who thinks her hair didnt change at all except the fact that they were more curly after? A thousand dollars for this!

Fea Pratt: That guy isn’t an artist, he’s a con artist

ღSwnsasyღ _: My husband pays $30 a month for his haircut and I'm complaining.. $1000? Yea no.. I think the champagne convinced her it's worth it

Y J: Btw there seems to be lots of commenting roasting this hair saloon Altho i do agree it's very overpriced Im pretty sure it's more of a "luxury" experience instead of just the haircut itself Just like some who buy sneakers that worth tens of grands. No one is paying for the "value" and "material"

Juan Carlos: I cut my own hair for 'bout a buck or two - and I'll compliment myself from time to time to keep me coming back for more.

P T: My hairstylist could do this exact thing to my hair for like 40 bucks

Kayla Dorsey: As a hair dresser....this is a con artist, wow.

Good Morning: Honestly he didn't do a whole lot that made it *that* different she certainly looked far better but a haircut shouldn't aided by styling it differently i.e. curling or straightening. That something that has always bugged me because it only lasts a day and goes back to normal tomorrow.

Franny P.: AT FIRST I THOUGHT THIS WAS A CLICKBAIT VIDEO! I thought I was the only thinking that his overrated haircut service is $1000 is just because he has a French accent... Maybe I can start charging my haircuts like that too. Cuz not to be braggy I am also a licensed hairstylist/cosmetologist too and I can do what he did just as good if not better and I can soeak French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese & Korean! What's the point of getting a 1 grand haircut if it can be done by other stylists who has similar skills. HIS SERVICE IS SO OVERRATED!

Lois Laudin: He definitely did a great job, but worth $1,000? I think he said he "didn't have the time" so he could fit in several more $1,000 haircuts.

Alya Hashim: $1000 dolar haircut with $3 orange hair brush.. LMAOO

Jahnae Edwards: She went from looking 24 to 34

Luke Thomas: Kind of 70s. It's worth finding a good stylist because where they remove the weight to shape the hair has a huge impact on how it lays and how easy it is to style. But, especially if you learn the correct terms for what you want, that can achieved for a lot less than a grand.

Ankita korgaonkar: 1:04 Is that guy hypnotizing her? Look at her expression lol

cc 1k: She was instantly under his spell. Must be some powerful stuff in the air inside that salon.

lillian fun: why pay for a thousand dollar service just to not take his advice? the way he blow dried the bangs looked phenomenal.

Luis Mendoza: For full comparison, she should wait until her hair grows back and then get a regular $50 dollar haircut, to see how they compare!!

K3RSMAN: Love how they get you drunk so you forget about how much u just wasted on a cut

Jenna Karpe: I would definitely pay for that $1000 haircut. It does look like you can grow it out for 6 months and still look good compared to the average everyday American haircut. That’s a nice haircut

Ej Edwards: I wish I had enough money to do this, I pay $30 a week plus tip to maintain my haircut, I wish $1475 was the equivalent to a $30 haircut for me.

Reema Shahi: Seriously?? ‍♀️ any normal salon can do that! And in a fraction of wt she paid for.

brianna skye: her: spends $1k on a hair style her after: I HATE IT

BLACK BARBIE: SIS U COULD HAVE PAID ME A GRAND TO DO THAT....HECK I WOULD HAVE TAKEN HALF

Diet Dr. Pepper: I think their idea was to get people buzzed and make them feel better about spending that much on a haircut
