Disclaimer: I am not a licensed nail tech. I am often asked about how I paint my nails, tips and tricks, and what not to do which is why I made this video. This is what I do and what works for me! If you have something you want to add to what I’ve said in this video please feel free to comment!

Hey guys, it's gabby welcome back to my channel. So today i have the do's and don'ts of painting your nails, and this is actually gon na be a series on my channel. So each week i'm gon na have a do's and don'ts of something related to nail. Polish, so get excited yeah, okay, so, first off you want to make sure there is no polish on your nails. I know this is an obvious one, but i've seen other people paint over other colors. So don't be that person. So i always start by caring. For my cuticles - and this is like nail rule number one do not cut your cuticles. I can't even show you the little cuticle cutters right now, because i don't have any. What you want to do is get yourself some cuticle oil and just massage that along your cuticles and then after about five minutes, you're going to use an orange stick. This is what it looks like and you're just going to push back your cuticles gently just to make them look all nice, and even i guess now, if you already have a buildup of cuticles, you can use a cuticle remover. This is one from sally hansen that i use from time to time, but you do have to be careful with these because they can over time, weaken your cuticle and overall, just weaken your nails. So again, if you can just stick with the cuticle oil and a little orange stick and you'll be good. Next, i move on to filing my nails and i actually use a high grit nail file and basically, what that means is it's like a really rough file, because my nails are really hard, so they're kind of difficult to get down. But if you have a weaker nails, you definitely want to use a glass nail file which i don't have right now, but it's a very low grit file. So it won't damage your nails or anything, and the biggest thing to remember is do not file in both directions, make sure you're filing only in one direction. If you file them both, it's like sawing your nails back and forth, which only causes more damage. So don't do that and i know filing one direction takes so much longer, but trust me it's worth it and as for my nail shape, it's actually pretty easy to maintain. All i do is file going straight across the top, and then i also file going straight up along the sides just to get that square shape, and that's really it so moving on you're going to wash your hands after that, just to get those oils off and Just get any file shavings off of your nails. After that, you need to get any oils off of your nails and a lot of people. Don'T do this step, but you're gon na get some alcohol just like regular, rubbing alcohol that you get from like the grocery store and you're gon na get a makeup sponge. I know a lot of people use cotton, balls or cotton swabs, but you don't want to do that because it can get those little cotton strings on your nail and that's probably the worst thing: finding little strings in your nail polish and that just messes up your Mini so i use a makeup sponge and i just wipe the nail with alcohol and after you do, this do not touch your nail or anything because you're going to be putting the oils right back on. It is finally time to apply your base coat. I feel like there's not many ways to mess this up. I mean you can make it too thick. I guess so definitely avoid that, but i feel like the main thing is people just don't apply their base coat sometimes, and i've been there. I'Ve done that and i had really stained nails so make sure you apply your base coat because it not only prevents staining, but it will also make your mani last next you're going to pick your nail polish color, and you want to make sure that you don't Shake your bottle because this is a great way to get air bubbles, so instead you're going to roll it just in between your hands to get that formula all mixed up and then you are ready to paint your nails also just throwing in there. You probably want to pick a nail polish that has a better formula or that's newer, as opposed to a nail polish, that's like old and gulpy, just because that will be harder to work with, and i also think it's easier to use a polish that has a Bigger brush, this is a personal preference, because my nails are obviously bigger. So it's kind of up to you but nails ink is a great example of that. Their brush is huge. So when you're painting your nails, i always start in the middle, i feel like it would be kind of weird to start from the sides. But you know if you want to go ahead, but either way just make sure that you're applying a thin coat. If the coat is like thick, you'll, probably get air bubbles, so just make sure it's a thin coat and also make sure you're not too focused on getting it really close to the cuticle line, because that will honestly make it easier to mess up. Because you could easily flood your cuticles and get nail polish everywhere and also don't worry if it's not perfectly done around your cuticle line, because you can go back and fix that later and then you're going to finish. That first coat by capping the tip, which is basically just taking your nail polish brush and running it across the edge of your nail. Then, when you go to apply that second coat, you want to make sure that that first coat is completely dry because, like i said before, you can get air bubbles if it isn't so once that dries, i'm going to apply the second coat and then this time I'M not going to cap the tip. You don't want to cap the tip with every single coat you do because, at least for me it can cause a buildup it'll, be awkwardly thick, which makes it chip easier. So i recommend just capping it with your first coat of nail polish, and also your top coat so after that second coat. Now is the time to go back and fix any mistakes. You may have made along your cuticle or, if you accidentally, gotten a nail polish on your skin, and i don't really have that many mistakes, but all you're going to do is take a brush and you want to use an angled brush. You don't want to use a brush, that's just straight across and you're just going to dip that brush and some acetone and just gently clean up around your nail and don't go crazy because you don't want to accidentally knock into the polish and mess up. So just take your time and you'll be good, and now for your top coat, it's pretty much the same rules that you're going to follow. You want to make sure that that second coat is completely dry, and then you want to make sure that you don't shake your um top coat and then also make sure that you cap that free edge. So that is it. I recommend just sitting there after you do your nails for a little bit. Let them completely dry because you don't want to mess up all the work you just did and don't wave your hands trying to dry them faster because again, air bubbles but yeah. I think that is everything. Hopefully i didn't forget anything if i did feel free to leave some advice down in the comments to help other people. I hope you guys enjoyed the video. I will have another do's and don'ts video next wednesday, so yeah, okay, bye,

Gabby Angelique: Guys lol the glitch of glitter nails at like 5:14 & 5:18 is not an advertisement! I didn’t try to secretly promote or do a hidden ad or anything like that The picture is actually an old picture from a Nails inc coffee nail polish review that I posted on this channel about a year ago. I edit in iMovie and somehow the picture made an overlay onto my video‍♀️

M R: I’m a 41 year old man watching this to help my wife. The “do nots” helped a ton! She was standing there literally shaking her hands as you were saying not to

Eabha O'Farrell: My problem is 1 letting it dry without smudging 2.making the layers too thick 3.painting with my bad hand 4. And getting good polishes that aren’t all lumpy and have a good brush

No Na: I just painted my nails and decided to watch youtube till it dries. Then i saw this video. Great. Just great

pink panther: My left hand always looks amazing and then my right hand nails are like a third grader painted them

KimShea22: Using alcohol to dehydrate your nails before your mani makes *SUCH* a big difference! I've been doing it for about 6 months now and my polish stays on much longer than it used to. It's a much-overlooked step that can make all the difference. And for a great cleanup brush - a tiny little concealer brush from E.l.f. makeup brand works awesome. It's only $1 and it's the perfect size to really clean your edges great!

XxQueenxiexX: I don't get how they get the polish so smooth A year later: Guys I have figured it out I just got a better quality polishmake sure its liquidy (best way to explain it)

hgfjonv huihghj: Step 1: have beautifull long healthy strong nails like her

Belle: I’m a perfectionist so it literally has to be perfect or I just take the polish off my nails and give up

✧*̣̩ River: **looks down at my depressing dirty bitten nails**

Lindsey R.: I wanna thank you for this video. It helped me to be more patient with myself in doing this, especially since painting my nails is one of my top self-care things right now and I'm working with a tremor. And hey, my nails turned out better this time than last! So yeah, A+ advice and I appreciate you sharing it.

Nicole Pulmones: i just love how i watch this AFTER i'm done doing my nails ‍♀️

Wanda Williams: This one video gave me the courage to start doing my own nails. At first it was a mess.. But, through my watching this over and over again, I'm getting compliments. I've even, starting to do designs. I've saved enough money, to buy great colors and implements to do a really good job.. I owe it all to you Gabby. Thanks for the tutorials. You're AWESOME!!! Peace

michelle lesser: honestly i paint my nails rly badly then wait like three-four hours then i take a hot shower and i have an exfoliating hand towel for washing my body, then it easily comes off the skin

LisaMarie: Great directions!!! My daughter is a nail tech and I’m always looking for new ideas for her. The things are spot on! You gave great advice and didn’t try to keep ‘trade secrets’. Not everyone has the time or money to go to a salon.

Gisel vlogs: Thank you for doing this video!!! I noticed I have been doing many things wrong, thanks to you I won’t make the same mistakes again!! Love your videos!

Comrade Dan: This is the very first video I've ever watched on the subject, and I will use what I learned to apply my very first coat in 27 years. I am levitating with excitement.

Terri Williams: This is excellent advice. I realized that I've been doing almost everything wrong. Lol I use base and top coat, but for a while, my top coat has been cutting into the nail polish and looking awful. I think I was applying the top coat too thick. Anyway, I will definitely be using these tips. Thank you!

Just Me: Excellent Gabby...I learned a lot, this was actually one of the BEST videos created on this subject that I've ever seen (watched alot!!!!!) thank you so much! Will be looking forward to others by y.o.u. ♡

Masi Capone: Don't know if anyone mentioned this in the comments, but I believe you meant to say that the rough file is a low grit, and the glass one which is a lot more gentle is a high grit. The higher the grit, the smoother the surface basically.

Darcy L: Such a great video. So frills, just perfect camera angle, tips and info. Thank you! Off to do my nails...wish me luck

cmhb24: Hi Gabby! Could you do a complete video, painting with your non- dominant hand? I have seen some in you-tube, but I really like the way you explain things. Thank you for sharing your secrets with us!

Ashley Bowen: Thank you for the tips, I realized I was doing many small things wrong. Hope to improve my painting technique!!

Moaning Minnie: Going to try that, my nails always look shocking when I’ve done them myself. I don’t have long nails as they break so easily. Enjoyed the video. Xx

Daniela Valentina Cicchino: Thank you so much for this info! I just did my nails with Nail Boo and made many mistakes so this video will help me next time I do my nails!

Stephanie Baker: I have FINALLY found a nail tutorial channel that gives clear, concise, easy to follow instructions! Basically, this is how I have been doing my nails for a long time, but there were a couple of little things that were very helpful (and I will adjust in my nail painting routine.) I have used nail drying spray on and off, with mixed results. What are your thoughts on this particular product Gabby? Should I not be using it? Or perhaps I wasn't using it correctly. If you do recommend using it, what is the best way to do so? Anyway, this video was excellent and I will watch your other tutorials. (I just stumbled across your channel! IT!!!) Thank you so much Gabby, you certainly know what you are doing and are an excellent teacher!!

Hand Soap: Why I’m horrible at painting my nails: 1. I don’t have nails 2. I smudge it everywhere 3. I get so bored waiting an eventually I move and ruin it 4. I cant paint very well with my left hand

Shaqueta Reed: Love how you get straight to the point ❤️❤️

Marisol Cortes: I’m always polishing my nails. So today when I was going to start I came across this video! I followed your tips and it made such a difference! I need to go get the make up sponges though. Thank you so much!!!!!

Sana Shakir: I use cotton tips all the time to clean up around my finger and to dry my nail beforehand, I’ve never had an issue with the cotton getting onto the nail. As long as its wet with alcohol/acetone, it should be fine

Melinda Maybe: Groovy. I usually just throw a layer of paint on my nails, but you are really doing this like a professional. Maybe I will begin to paint my nails again.

Jenny Cull: Actually, the higher the grit, the finer it is. If your nail file is rough then it's low grit

sophie104ify: Whenever I do more than 2 costs my nails start having indentations on them like when I wake up in the morning there will be random marks on it. How do I avoid this?

Evie Salas: Very helpful, thanks for the tips. All these videos now at days making people think we need to cut off our cuticles. So I appreciate that was one of them.

Maime Schemenauer: You have the most beautiful nails Gabby, I have tried to apply polish and it never works for me I don't know how you get it absolutely flawless, I seen how you did it but I can't duplicate it!

Angela Reyes: How do you avoid that awk line when you do the cap? Every time I try caping my nails I get a line

Kali M.: Great advice Gabby...thank you for sharing this. I have a question..i bought numerous different types of indie topcoats and have issues with them. One loses its shine and then forms cracked lines and around the corners of the nail tip the polish chips off. The other looks great and promising but by day 2 is flaking off. Am I doing something wrong?

AzerathMetrionZintos: As a licensed nail technician, some of these tips are true and some of them are not necessary. As for the cuticles, you can cut your cuticles as long as you actually know the difference between your cuticle and your eponychium. For filing, yes you never want to “saw” your nail, but you want to try to only file from the back towards the tip. As for the alcohol, this step is not 100% necessary as long as you know how to properly apply your polish, the only times you need to dry out your nail plate is for acrylics and gels.

1 For The People: @Gabby: I really enjoyed your video tutorial. A lot of great tips & very informative. Thank you for sharing.

Mahagony74 Red: One of the BEST DIY I've seen!! Quick and to the point!! Thank you! #NewSubscriber

Little Mermaid: Thank you! This is SUPER helpful and easy to follow

Edwin Gonzalez: This was helpful. I just started painting my nails and I felt completely lost, thank you.

Cindy W: I've been doing my own nails for years and follow every step you did, except the alcohol. I will use alcohol on my next mani. Love your videos and am embarrassed to say I wasn't subscribed ! I am now though, great video as always

Linda Winn: Well I don’t feel like I need to search any other how to videos , although I possibly will, because yours seemed to cover everything and made so much sense. Thank you. Also, short, sweet and to the point. Excellent.

Alex Salazar: All the dont's you just mention is everything I did Thank you for the video ♡

Patrice Akin: I found this very helpful and fun. Nice presentation. Keep up the good work!

Zan Duncan: I'M SO TRYING THIS RIGHT NOW. I'm guilty of not applying base coat :) And having thick layers & Smudging nails because it takes too long to dry! No More!

GoldenAge: I enjoy cutting my cuticles. I use extremely sharp cuticle scissors instead of nippers. I'm very careful when I do this, but I have to say, using cuticle remover is easier, a lot faster, and safer! I keep thinking of buying more remover and I always forget.

Live & Thrive with Svetlana: I keep coming back to this video. So many great tips! Thank you!

Tasha Kessinger: Even though I do & play with my nails a lot, almost constantly, I feel like a professional but I still learn new things from other ppl, I shake my bottles, so thank u for setting me straight.

M Park: Great videos! I've just discovered your channel and loved the ombre nail video you made and wandered on over to this one :) Very informative, and done at a perfect pace.

Shelby B: This was such a great video for beginners. Thanks!

Faye: This is so nice. I love painting my nails too and this is really helpful. Haha I even vlog about nail polishing almost 3 times

Kelly: I tend to always screw my nails up because they are short and wide. I envy those who have long, thin nails. I wish there was a tutorial for my shaped nails. Thanks for the video

Lisa Sunshine: Don’t flood the cuticles beds! I never knew this! Perfect looking nails now! Thank you so much!

Makeup Mobster: Yes for bigger brushes! I love the one on the sally Hansen gel! I bought holo taco nail polish which is great but the brushes are too skinny! They kill me!

lelechim: I wipe my nails with an alcohol prep pad before painting them, to remove the oils. Instead of throwing it away right after, I save it to use at the end of my paint job. By that point, it's just about dry, and I wipe my brush for my top coat on it before I put it back in the bottle, to prevent my top coat from becoming murky. I've flooded my cuticles so many times, but I clean around each nail after each coat with a tiny brush and some professional strength nail polish remover. It may take longer than doing the cleanup at the end, but I find that it gives a better result.

Vivienne: Watching this so I can stay in one spot and wait for my first coat to dry to prevent moving and smudging them

BeaunaturelleFeb11: Gabby your nails are gorgeous! Where do you buy your hard grit files from please? And do you apply varnish DIRECTLY AFTER having used the alcohol without rinsing it off? If yes, does it not dry out your nails? I hope you respond, because i really wanna try this. Thank you.

Blue Clarity: I know I've heard it said many times: don't shake your nail polish = air bubbles, blah blah blah BUT I've got to be honest I shake the crap outta my polish and I have never once had a problem. And I have a fairly large collection of many brands. Also I was wondering why you said not to ever cut your cuticles? I see all these Russian nail techs do it and was considering trying it but now I'm not so sure. Do you use gel at all Gabby? I'd love to see a video like this on gel polish. There's something about it that I'm just not getting. Thanks.

Esther Oh: What base coat did you use in this video? I'm excited to do my nails after watching this video! I always get air bubbles in my nails :( Great, short video :)

Carla Shultz - Edwards: My Wonderful Mother taught me to soak my nails after polish in cold water (preferably ice water) in the sink. This dries you nails quicker. Also after painting your nails typing is a good way to let your nails dry as well as driving, both let your nails dry without the miss up on trying to touch things. My nails are like Gabby's and I'm 58 - practice makes perfect!

Kris I: Hey! I just need to make a correction on your video around 1:15 in case beginners go out and buy the wrong file! LOW grit nail files are actually the COARSER files! If you are using a high grit file, that means your file is very, very fine, and LESS abrasive. I believe you misspoke in your video. Grit is a measurement of the number of sharp particles per square inch of sandpaper. A 1000 or a 4000 grit nail file would be very smooth and fine because the particles would be very, very, very tiny. A 100 grit nail file, for example, is a much coarser file and is usually not suitable on natural nails. You would most often use this LOW grit file to file down or remove acrylics. If your nail file is coarse, then it is actually low grit - not high grit, as you said around 1:15! No worries though - it is easy to get the two mixed up! However, it is very important to know the difference so beginners don’t go out and buy a low grit nail filer thinking it will be non-abrasive and then tear up their nail edge!

JILLyBean 95: this is absolutely the MOST ACCURATE video of do's and dont's for nails i have seen. EVERYTHING YOU WENT THROUGH I LEARNED IN COSMETOLOGY a lot of ppl either file their nails on both sides, or they use lotion and dont clean their hands before nail polish which prevents it from drying... like EVER. And a lot of ppl shake the bootle which does cause air bubbles we learned to roll the bottle inside of our palms to prevent this from happening. ANOTHER TIP always clean the mouth of the bottle from the nail polish because it gets sticky, tacky and gunky and it is 1- a lot harder to close and 2- it also damages the nail polish and the brush. So what youll do is take a cotton pad or ball and get some acetone and CAREFULLY clean around it so that it doesnt damage the nail polish.

tyvianc: Gabby thanks for the technique. I'm a guy who does feet but doesn't paint nails. Since I've learned some tips from you, I can try to practice and get my nail game right to get prospective clients and change careers.

xiaoyang zhang: I just started to use nail polisher to customize my fishing lures, and this video helped a lot. Thanks!

xxpaige: I also suggest buying a “mistake marker” I like to call it. It basically has nail polish remover in it so if u get a bit on ur finger u can rub it on the area and it’ll come off :)

Sandy Enniss: Thanks for the video it was helpful never thought about air bubbles when you shake your hands ... I have been growing my nails and they are very long now is there anything I can put on my nails without messing them up that would make them look like salon ? Like gel nail polish? Or gel ? Any tips would be appreciated I just don’t want to mess my nails up cause I have grown them out and it has taken a while thank you

Jan Goguen: Nice job! Beautiful nails :)

Mara Meza Colman: basically everything i was doing caused the freaking air bubbles!! lol now I finally know what not to do to avoid them

sunnysideup: Tip: you can add a few drops of acetone to a bottle of nail polish that’s gotten clumpy. I learned this from when I would go to the salon and I’d see the nail techs do it.

Beth Perry: Any tips on wrapping the nail when your nails are stubs? I’ve tried to put stickers under the nail tip. Maybe I’ll experiment with that more. Any suggestions appreciated!

Jennie cartier: As a nail tech you did a great job polish! It’s all in polish the nails! Thin to win!

Fatima V: "File in One Direction" Me sobbing: *BaBbY yOu LiGthT Up mY wOrLd liKe NoObOdYy eLse*

paige hr: DO: cap the base coat!!!! This makes it last so much longer!!!!!!

Madelyn Brett: Thank you this video helped me so much,I sucked at painting my nails I’m so much better!!!

Suzanne Dawson: Awe, thank you so much for these tips. I am truly an amateur with my nails and I do cut my cuticles because they get SO DRY and they crack out here in the dry high desert. Your results are lovely but I have to be real here; I’m not feeling that ridge of cuticle you’ve created at the base of your nail. Before I knew what you were doing, I honestly thought it was a small line of rubber cement or something you used to protect the cuticle from getting polish on it. Something you would peel off later, after your manicure.

Tiffany Boylen: I love to watch your videos because I love to paint my nail's And I love to do different designs on my nail's!

Dawn Burwell: Yes , You should file in one direction: but from sides of the nail , up to the top . Not in one direction going to the side. ☺️

Bright Eyes: Hey girl! Great video thank you so much! I notice you have a little black mark on/under your nail, I have been getting those every now and then since I grew my nails out( I used to only to sculpture acrylics) do you know what they are and why we get them?

Sherrie Echols: You have such beautiful nails!!! Thanks for the tutorial!

General 666: I paint my nails weirdly, but it works for me. Imma try to describe it the best I can. I place the polish brush at the middle near the cuticle of the nail and slide only a little bit of the way down the nail. Then I go back to the original spot and turn the brush like 45* to follow the direction of the cuticle. I paint down my nail turning the brush with the cuticle until it ends up in the normal direction. I do the same on the other side. Then I go down the middle completely to neaten it, if there is any lines I’ll go over it quickly to fix them. I find it works the best for me, and I guess the brushes also. And if I get a really cheap polish with a huge and flat brush I HAVE to turn the brush to get the rounded end at the cuticle.

pennypay1: Even with the faster-drying polish they have now (compared to when I was quite young), the drying time takes patience. Especially between coats. I usually listen to music and I put my phone out of reach so I'm not tempted to scroll.

joebaby1975: Not paint, polish. Not dry, cure. This is a great video. You have gorgeous nails. Technical terminology will strengthen what your teaching. I’m the worst at not applying a base coat. Staining doesn’t bother me too much, but it creates pitting. Tip I use though. I put 40 v developer on my nails if I want to put a clear coat. Love you girl.

Allure ree: One tip: if you're left handed, start with it. So you won't struggle at the end because when you try to apply a nail polish at the right hand using your left, you are gonna struggle at the end, but it still depends on you.

Cynthia Yap: When I paint my nails, they turn out really streaky and not smooth or that it is very obvious that the coat is uneven. When I try to make it smoother, it ends up too thick (often times still uneven). Any tips? Thank you :)

BUFFSLUT: Holy shit that was the most perfect thing I've ever seen. Your finished product is like, beyond flawless. So jealous

Z C: I always wanted to paint my nails it’s just that they have a wider nail bed. And I know not everyone has the same thin and slim elongated nails, but do you guys have any advice or tips in transforming wider nail beds into thinner ones? Thanksss

Tiff Fish: Most informative nail video I have seen. Very helpful~

Antonio Biorato: 1 )wash hands 2 ) get oils of nails so use Rubbing alcohol (any) 3) Make up sponge (Flat) 4) white nail with rubbing alcohol 5) after you do the 4th step do not touch your nail 6) finally apply your base coat 7) get the nail polish color as wished 8) do not Shake bottle so it lasts longer and so air bubbles do not form 9) before starting pinch both sides of the brush of the nail polish so both sides are flat 10) use a new Fresh nail polish so it's easier to paint your nails 11 ) start in the middle # or optional whichever you want 12)Apply a thin coat

Reem Al alal: Theres a way to take the brush from the nail polish So when you take it dont wipe the polish from the brush on both sides Just wipe it from one side I hope you understood but try it because its the right way

Alysia Mer David-Wasser: Seems like everyone who makes these has "naturally wide nail beds". i'm waiting for someone who has hands like mine: nail beds the size of a 10 year-old, and the dexterity to polish *the Non-dominant HAND* to match! ✌

Anh Vu: Hi there! How much pressure would you usually apply when painting the nails?

M KC: No matter how I try, my polish is always streaky. I use 2 coats and you can still see my nails. I've used lots of different brands and it's always streaky.

AMIT 2401: The most important thing is using only a rounded brush, which is easier to work with

M K: Thank you for these tips! Very helpful

Iz Desie: air bubbles have always been an issue for me, and sometime i apply thick 2nd coat, and when i mess up, I try to correct it by applying a even thicker top coat

Joan Gentile: Great advice!! Beautiful nails!! I wish I had nails like her!! Lol

Tasheena Brown: I’m a picker on my nails, after years of picking at my cuticles (anxiety), my right hand nails look bigger than my left hand because my cuticles are farther back on my right hand than my left hand. Should I avoid pushing my cuticles back at all?

CrystalClear: How long should it take each layer to dry typically? And when finished, how long till you can use your hands without fear of smudging?
