Why Do People Wear Wigs?

There are many reasons behind someone’s choice to wear a wig – it is impossible to generalise the wig-wearing public with only one. Some people opt for wigs for fashion, others for hair loss, some as part of a gender transition.

In fact there are a whole host of reasons why someone might choose to wear a wig, and there is no reason why everyone can’t enjoy the advantages of having a wig to hand.

Wigs for Cancer – Related Hair Loss

Wigs are probably most commonly linked to cancer patients. It is a common misconception that everyone who gets cancer will lose their hair, however many people who undertake chemotherapy do develop some hair loss or thinning.

Whilst the hair loss is temporary, a wig is a great way to help someone feel ‘normal’ at a time in their life when everything seems to be different.

Wigs for Alopecia

Alopecia can be either permanent or temporary and most sufferers don’t know when or even if their hair will grow back, or why it fell out in the first place. Many people with alopecia opt to wear wigs, and often have more than one.

Wigs for Pattern Baldness

Pattern baldness occurs in both men and women, however for men it is often a lot more acceptable to lose their hair and there are medicines available to help. However for women there is often little they can do – so they might choose to wear a wig to conceal it.

Wigs for Fashion

One great thing about wigs is being able to completely change your look and style, in a matter of seconds – making them a favourite for celebrities and fashionistas alike. Opting for a wig means you can always follow the trends – even when they jump from short styles, to shoulder-length over night.

Wigs for Transgenders

Many transgender men and women opt for wigs; it may be because they are struggling to grow their own hair – or it might be a temporary measure whilst their hair grows over the course of their transition.
