Human hair wigs allow endless different styling opportunities and long with a beautiful look and feel. Unlike most synthetic wigs, human hair wigs can be heat styled for ongoing versatility. To keep you and your wig looking your best, here are human hair styling tips.

Check the Label

This may seem obvious but the first step is to make sure your wig is 100% human hair. Many wigs are made with either synthetic fibres or a combination of human hair and synthetic fibres. Make sure you know what you’re working with before you begin styling and check the wig manufacturer’s content listing and care instructions.

Get the Cut

Be prepared for your human hair wig to come un-styled. This gives you flexibility so that you can have your hairstylist cut your wig while you’re wearing it to ensure the best possible cut. Having the wig cut means your hairstylist can make sure the cut aligns with the shape of your face and your individual wishes.

If in doubt, have your stylist cut less. Remember, your human hair wig won’t grow back! You are better off having your hairstylist cut off less if you aren’t sure about the style. Layers or a fringe could always be added later, as well.

Watch the Heat

A great advantage to human hair wigs is their ability to be heat styled. However, just like any human hair, wig hair can be subject to damage by curling irons, straighteners, and other heat styling appliances.  Make sure you don’t over heat hair as that can cause damage. Certain hair colours are more sensitive you should avoid using heated appliances exceeding 180 degrees.

Keep It Gentle

Since your wig hair won’t grow out, it is important to avoid causing damage. Aside from heat damage from styling tools, the most common cause of damage is to the area where each hair attaches to the wig cap. These hand-tied knots are sturdy but excessive pulling on the hairs can cause them to fall out or damage how the hair flows from the cap.

Wash, Then Style

Each time you wash your wig, be sure to use only shampoo and conditioner designed for human hair wigs. Place your wig on a wig tree stand to dry. Gently push hair into your desired part and shape but avoid combing or doing other styling of your wig while it’s wet. Let it air dry before you begin your styling.

Wig On, Wig Off

It is much easier to style your wig while it is on a stand, rather than on your head. Around your face, however, it is often easier to tell how the style will work while wearing your wig. That way you can make sure your fringe lines up exactly how you like it around your face. You can then take your wig off to continue styling the sides and back of your wig. Once you’ve had some practice, you may be able to judge the positioning of your fringe by eye and do all your wig styling with it on a wig stand.
