If you’re buying a wig for the first time, you’ll no doubt have all sorts of questions. We might not be able to answer all your doubts in this short article, but these are 3 essential areas that you should definitely know about before you get started searching for the right wig for you. Once you have a better idea of what might best suit your needs, why not take a look at our gorgeous collection of Amore Wigs – soft, comfy, 100% handtied and beautiful!

1. Choose a wig style that’s honest

At Joseph’s Wigs, we admire creativity, boldness and experimentation as much as anyone but (you could sense there was a but coming, couldn’t you?), is your first wig the time to exercise those virtues? There are lots of important things to consider for a first buy, and chief among these is confidence. We want you to feel confident in your new wig – confident when you’re getting ready in the morning, confident when you leave the house to see friends or colleagues, and confident in how you look and feel. So for a first-time buy, be honest about what style works for you. Leave the fun experimentation for later, and choose a look that’s natural and lovely and you!

2. Get down with the lingo

There are a whole bunch of wig terms that, if you’ve never owned or bought one before, you’re unlikely to know about. Here are a few key ones, and they’re all to do with how the wig is made:

  • Handtied Wigs

If you are looking at a 100% handtied wig, this means you’re looking at a light construction that allows you to comb the hair in any direction. This is great, because it means you’re wig hair will blow about in the wind and move freely as you do your daily tasks, just as your real hair would. A 100% handtied wig is super comfy and soft, and just what you need if you’re dealing with a sensitive scalp.

  • Lace Front Wigs

If you like to have your hair pulled back or away from the face, this exposes your hairline, or where the base of your wig starts – which means you’ll want a lace front wig. These wigs are made so that they have an incredibly natural-looking hairline – which is just what you need if you see yourself often wearing your hair up or tied back.

  • Double Monofilament Top Wigs

Made with a double layer at their soft base, these wigs are perfect for partings because they look so natural in the way they ‘grow’ from the ‘scalp’. Comfortable and versatile, monofilament tops are fantastic all-round wigs. We love this double monofilament top from Amore – what do you think?

3. Human hair or synthetic fibre

While you’ll immediately understand the essential difference here, you might be a little fuzzy on what that difference means in real terms. Well, you should expect whatever wig you buy to look natural, but human hair wigs look especially natural – once fitted, you really might struggle to know the difference even on close inspection, and they can be styled just like your real hair. Human hair wigs are also longer-lasting than synthetic wigs. The advantage that synthetic wigs have is that they are much lower-maintenance – human hair wigs require a lot of care – and they are generally less expensive.
