During the winter, we are exposed to a variety of weather and temperature conditions. Cold, ice, rain, or snow could greet us outdoor whist inside temperatures can vary from cool to sauna-like. The humidity levels also have a big impact. Here are tips for keeping you comfortable, regardless of the conditions.

Length

Longer hair might seem like a given for the winter but it’s not necessarily the best option. Shorter haircuts can pair more easily with a scarf or high coat collar. Wearing a hat can help to retain heat in during cooler weather and protect your wig from the elements. Short haircuts often pair better with a winter hat. Whilst long hair may be visually “lost” under winter clothing, short haircuts can provide a flattering fringe around your face. For example, Natural Image Wigs offer pixie cuts in a variety of styles.

Another thing to consider is the interior temperature. Often, we go from chilly outdoor conditions to shops or homes that are relatively hot and stuffy. The length of the wig could play a factor in how comfortable you’ll be in these changing conditions. On the other hand, if you prefer not to wear a scarf, longer hair could help to protect your neck from the wind and chill. An important factor in maintaining your comfort in changing weather conditions is the type of cap your wig has. Lightweight caps that allow better air circulation will be more comfortable when going from cold to hot temperatures.

Static Electricity

In the winter, static electricity becomes more of an issue. Human hair wigs tend to be less likely to accumulate static electricity than wigs made from synthetic materials. Fortunately, using conditioners and other maintenance products specifically designed for wig care helps to keep static electricity in check. Be sure to follow manufacturer instructions on the care of your wig and for applying anti-static treatments.

Humidity

Humidity is an important factor during the winter. Furnaces, fireplaces, and other sources of heat can lead to homes and businesses with very low humidity. If your home or business has air that’s uncomfortably dry, you can use a humidifier to add moisture to the air. That will make conditions more comfortable for your respiratory system and your wig.

If winter in your area is commonly accompanied by snow, rain, or sleet, then excess moisture could be an issue. It is best to avoid getting your wig wet. If it does get wet, it is best to wash it using wig shampoo, apply conditioner, and let it dry out as soon as conveniently possible.

Sweat

You might associate sweat with summer weather. In the winter, the cooler weather tends to lead to less sweat and the drier air may quickly wisk away any sweat that does form. Keep in mind that this does not eliminate the need to regularly maintain your wigs. Even though it may seem as though sweat and body order aren’t accumulating in the winter, your wig is still being exposed to body oil from your skin and hair as well as pollution from the air. Regular maintenance keeps contaminants from building up on your wig’s hair and cap.
