It is possible to wear your wig all summer long and be perfectly comfortable too. Here are our top tips for wearing a wig in warm weather.

If you have a sensitive scalp, then wearing a wig during the warmer summer months can be itchy and uncomfortable. May wig wearers even switch to wearing a scarf, turban, or nothing at all in the heat of the summer sun. But it is possible to wear your wig all summer long and be perfectly comfortable too. Here are our top tips for wearing a wig in warm weather:

Choose a Hand Tied Wig

Hand Tied wigs are the perfect option for the hot summer months. They’re lighter, have a looser weft that makes them more breathable, and can also be worn tied a little less tightly if you find that the heat and humidity makes you swell and feel uncomfortable.

If you’re really struggling to wear your wig in the heat then you may want to consider wearing a shorter wig, so that you have less hair sitting on the back of your neck. Natural Image wigs have a great range of modern short hair wigs that are perfect for wearing during the summer months. Many women with long natural hair choose to wear their hair in a ponytail or have it cut short when the weather warms up: this is the wig-wearers equivalent of this option.

Consider Synthetic Hair

The quality of human hair wigs tends to be higher and look a little more natural than synthetic hair. But in the summer months, synthetic hair may well be the better choice because it is lighter, finer, and generally less full. The lighter your hair the less hot and sweaty it will make your scalp feel, so this is a key consideration during the height of the summer.

If you’re committed to natural hair wigs and don’t want to deviate then definitely think about the length that you choose, or tie your hair up and away from your neck and face as much as possible.

Wash Your Wig Regularly

As a general rule, wig wearers are advised not to wash their wig on a daily basis, because it could cause damage or excessive wear and tear to the piece. However during the summer months you should increase the regularity with which you wash your wig to remove any oils and sweats they may have absorbed, so that these won’t cause irritation to your scalp. We would recommend washing your wig once a week during the summer if you wear it every day.

Avoid Direct Heat

If you don’t want to change your wig length or give up your commitment to your human hair wig, then you should avoid going outside during the heat of the day when you’re wearing your hair piece. High heat directly onto your wig will increase your core temperature and cause you to sweat and feel uncomfortable.

One of the best ways to avoid direct heat onto your wig without staying inside all day is to wear a hat or head scarf over your wig to deflect the heat as much as possible.
