How To Pick The Right Wig

Sometimes having a number of options from which to choose is a good thing, but conversely it can also prove to be a cause for concern.

When it comes to picking the right wig for instance, you may already be going through many different and difficult emotions relating to the actual loss of your hair, and so making any decision at all becomes that much harder.

The Wig

The questions begin with the actual term itself. Do you need a full wig, or a partial wig, and are you looking for a synthetic material or a wig made from human or animal hair? There are pros and cons to each choice and of course there are financial considerations to be taken into account too. Some wigs are even provided on the NHS, but that may not be an option for you and you may be purchasing your own.

Wigs are in fact worn by many people on a day to day basis, even as a fashion choice by some. They permit the user to have them styled in advance of wearing, so there is no rush in getting ready and they offer a “change” of look. However most people come to use wigs due to natural hair loss, illness, or treatments for certain conditions such as cancer. Sadly the side effects of such treatments can include hair loss, but today’s wigs are far removed from what you might imagine. They are stylish, durable and undetectable, they offer a peace of mind and also a degree of reassurance and security.

Synthetic Wig Or Human Hair Wig

The first choice has to be what you want your wig to be made of. Some wigs are created from harvested/donated human hair which is styled into shape; whereas others are made up from synthetic (or unnatural) fibres. Don’t be put off by the word unnatural though, it refers to their molecular composition, not their appearance.

There are pros and cons to both options which you’ll need to consider.

Human hair wigs will of course have that natural feel, as you will be wearing actual hair. They are often more expensive, due to the need for materials, but they offer perhaps a slightly improved movement and shine. They are easy to style, and are durable if well looked after. You will need to use specialist products in the caring for your human hair wig, and they’ll need to be conditioned and hydrated. All of this though may feel like it is high-maintenance and will also increase the overall cost.

Synthetic wigs tend to be cheaper and that may be something to consider. But there are other benefits too. Technology has greatly advanced and so has the end product. You’d struggle to tell the difference between wigs types, unless you are a true expert with a trained eye, and synthetic wigs have improved immensely over time. Synthetic wigs can usually be worn straight out of the box with little if any styling needed. Technology gives them a “memory” and so they return to the style in which they were crafted. The down side to this is of course their versatility, in that the style you purchase is the one you keep. They do however fare well in bad weather, but just perhaps lack that little bit of adaptability.

Once your mind is made up about human or synthetic hair there are still choices to be made. You will need to consider the cap, the actual fitting of the hairpiece onto your head. There are different choices to be made such as lace-front or mono-filament, but comfort and personal preference will definitely come into play. One thing is for certain though and that will be the need for some expert input at this stage, as the “fit” of the wig itself is crucial. You want it to feel natural and not worry about how it looks when on.

You

Perhaps the final consideration is about you. How do you want to appear, what style do you want to have with your wig; something akin to how you’ve always worn your hair, or something completely different? Are you concerned about people noticing a sudden change or are you more interested in feeling great about yourself? Other questions include the shape of your face and what style compliments your appearance, style and moreover your personality. At the end of the day always remember that it will be you wearing the wig.

At first you might not welcome the number of choices that there are, but once you realise the possibilities and the opportunities available to you, then you will surely change your mind. Rather than worrying about the choice, embrace the fact that you are able to make one and indeed, have many great options and alternatives to pick from. With a little expert help and guidance, you’ll certainly end up making the right choice for you.
