Wigs That Flatter Your Face Shape

One of the major factors in choosing a wig is finding a style that flatters the shape of your face. Get it right, and your wig will accentuate your best features; get it wrong and you may find that your least lovely features are highlighted.

To find out which one of the face shapes discussed below best describes you, pull back your hair and look in a mirror. You can also ask your friends and family or take a “selfie.” You can also ask your friends and family or take a “selfie” and have a good, long look at it. Once you have decided which shape best describes your face, you can go to the “Hollywood Makeovers” section of Instyle.com to upload your selfie and compare different wig styles.

The Round Face

This shape is characterized by fullness below the cheekbones and a wide hairline. Look for a wig with:

·         A geometric or linear style

·         Extra height

·         Long, wispy side areas

Comb the hair close to the side. A side parting works well with this face shape.

Patti’s recommendations: Jon Reneau “Allure,” “Raquel Welch “Boost,” Gabor “Advantage.”

The Oval Face

This is an ideal face shape with no dominant areas. The face is evenly balanced and, consequently, looks great with any hairstyle.

Patti’s recommendations: Jon Reneau “Blair,” Raquel Welch “Always,” Gabor “Socialite.”

The Square Face

Similar to the round face, the square face has a wide jaw and a wide hairline. Combing hair off the forehead gives height. Curly textures and hair around the face help to break straight, wide lines.

Patti’s recommendations: Jon Reneau “Gwen,” Raquel Welch “Embrace,” Gabor “Prosperity.”

The Diamond Face

Narrow at the chin and forehead with wide cheekbones, the diamond face looks best with narrow sides and fullness around the chin. Bangs conceal the narrow forehead. Avoid side fullness and height.

Patti’s recommendations: Jon Reneau “Melanie,” Raquel Welch “Bravo,” Gabor “Appeal.”

The Heart Face

The heart-shaped face a narrow chin and a wide forehead. A bit of hair on the forehead will de-emphasize its width. Hair should be kept close to the head at the eyes but slightly full around the jaw, and below/in front of the ear bones.

Patti’s recommendations: Jon Reneau “Allure,” Raquel Welch “Bewitched,” Gabor “Appeal.”

The Pear Face

The pear face has a narrow or small forehead and a full, possibly pouchy jaw line. Comb hair forward from the crown to add width at eye level. Keep hair close at the sides and at the nape of the neck.

Patti’s recommendations: Jon Reneau “Bianca,” Raquel Welch “Enigma,” Gabor “Premium.”

The Oblong Face

This is a face shape with a long and narrow bone structure that is possibly accompanied by a long, slender neck. Soft waves or curls at the nape and crown are set off by a bang or half-bang.

Patti’s recommendations: Jon Reneau “Dakota,” Raquel Welch “Celebrity,” Gabor “Fortune.”

There are no hard and fast rules, these are only suggestions. If you fall in love with a wig that doesn’t fit into the “right” category, don’t worry. Many wig styles flatter a range of different face types. If it makes you look and feel great, then it’s the right fit.
