Most people who wear wigs want their hairpieces to stay put from morning to night. In fact, a lot of wig wearers go to great lengths to ensure their wigs don’t move a millimetre. One of the best ways to keep a wig in place is with wig tape.

Safe, affordable, and very effective, it’s a great option for anyone who wants a little extra insurance that their hair piece will stay put.

What is wig tape?

If you’ve ever taken a close look at the inside of your wig, you’ll probably have spotted some shiny silicon strips clinging to its underside.

These are there to help grip your scalp and prevent the wig from slipping. While these generally work every well, you can also use wig tape to help ensure your hairpiece stays exactly where it’s put. Wig tape is double-sided, medical-grade sticky tape that’s completely safe to use on your skin.

As @naturallycurly explains, “If you’ve got a bald head or areas where hair is missing, you can keep your wig in place with the help of some double-sided tape.”

You simply cut a little off, stick it to your scalp and then apply your wig. The tape will stick to both your scalp and the wig, keeping it firmly in position.

However, if your wig base does not have the shiny silicone patches, you can buy these and sew them into the base of your wig, in different areas, and then apply the tape to this, put the wig in position and press firmly down to the scalp.

Does wig tape leave residue?

While high-quality wig tape shouldn’t leave any residue on your scalp or on your wig, some brands may leave a little bit of sticky film behind. It’s easy to remove this residue from your scalp.

All you’ll need is a sponge or cloth and a little soapy water or for more stubborn residue there are a number of removers available. Rub the residue for a second or two and it should come cleanly away. Cleaning tape wig residue from your hair replacement system can be a little more complicated.

While a lot can be removed by using a sponge or cloth, dried on residue may be harder to get rid of and again you would need to use a specialised remover for this.

In order to prevent the build-up of residue on your wig, and keep the hairpiece in good condition, you may need to give it a thorough wash. Washing your wig once or twice a week helps to keep it clean and stops dirt and grime from becoming ingrained in the hairpiece.

Always follow manufacturers guidelines when washing a synthetic or human hair wig. It’s also recommended to use products that have been specifically designed for use with wigs.

Which wig tape

It’s always a good idea to go for the best quality wig tape you can afford. In general, good quality tapes work more effectively and leave less residue. This means your wig is even more likely to stay put and feel comfortable. If you’re not sure which wig tape to buy, ask your wig manufacturer for their recommendations.
