With wigs being such an easy and straightforward way to switch up your look, unsurprisingly there are loads of famous wig wearers out there. They aren’t all women either, there are loads of famous male wig wearers as you shall see.

Of all the famous actresses to be a wig wearer, we were not expecting Keira Knightley to be one of them as we sat discussing this post in the Wigs4U office. This just highlights how impressively naturalistic wigs are, as we wig experts hadn’t even noticed that Knightley had been wearing them.

Knightley explained in an article in 2016 that she had been wearing wigs for the past five years due to the amount of damage that constantly dying her hair to match the character she had been cast to play had left her hair seriously damaged to the point that it was falling out.

Moving to wearing wigs instead of dying her hair to help her get into character had rescued her hair. She now describes the move to wig wearing as the “greatest thing that’s ever happened” to her hair.

John Travolta has got to be right up there on the list of most famous wig wearers. However, he embraced his natural appearance in January 2019 by turning up to a red carpet event without a hairpiece ‘electrifying’ the crowd.

Katie Holmes is another shocking name to see on this list of famous wig wearers. Who knew she of the blunt bangs and bob was a fan of a hairpiece? But she most definitely is, after turning up to the 2015 Met Gala with her hair styled as a bob for one night only after wearing it in a long, relaxed waves hairstyle for some time.

Another famous male wig wearer is Hugh Laurie. Laurie sported a wig for his role as Dr House in American medical drama House M.D., which ended in 2012.

He can be seen in the TV show with a wonderfully thick head of hair and then at the film premiere of Hop, starring Laurie and also Russell Brand, in 2011, Laurie displayed a significant bald spot on the back of his head.

Salma Hayek is a huge fan of wigs to help her mix up her look and have fun with her styling. She frequently embraces a wig to help her “go blonde for a day”. Hayek proves that wigs can be chic, stylish and fun, not something that needs to be whispered or kept secret.

Alongside John Travolta, Elton John is another huge name on the list of famous men who wear wigs.

Elton commented on his failed hair transplant and the dodgy wigs that he has worn over the years and that without wearing a hairpiece he would look like Shrek in a revealing interview from late 2019. Elton now wears very natural toupees as he has not decided to publicly embrace his natural balding appearance.

Kylie Jenner is a well-known lover of wigs, using them to keep her fans guessing about what her natural hair is really like and to help keep her appearance fresh and surprising at all times without risking damaging her hair by constantly dying or perming it.

Like Salma Hayek and Kylie Jenner, Katy Perry is an enormous fan of embracing wigs to help her experiment with her look. She has been known to rock wigs of all colours, lengths, styles, and textures to help her wow the crowds. Katy Perry’s natural hair is actually dark blonde.

It sounds like the start of one of the Chuck Norris jokes that were all over the internet about a decade ago, but apparently Norris wears a wig (or does the wig wear Chuck Norris?).

Finally, at number 10, where better to end our piece looking at the most famous wig wearers than with Rihanna? Rihanna has been known to change her look over and over again and wigs have helped her do that without risking damaging her natural hair.

Wigs have enabled Rihanna to go from a dark brunette to bright red and blonde within an instant wowing the red carpet and fans alike.

A common feature of all of the famous wig wearers looked at here is how they use wigs to have fun with their look, proving that wigs don’t need to be something taboo or secret.

You can have fun with your wig and you can use it to be brave and experimental with your look, pushing the boundaries with your styling in a way that you probably wouldn’t if you were to dye your natural hair over and over again.
