When you start wearing a wig, a whole new world opens up around you. There is a lot to familiarise yourself with. We know that for many people when they start wearing a wig all of the accessories that come with it, can sometimes be a little baffling.

That’s why we’ve put together this handy guide for you to refer to if you are ever unsure about some of the common wig accessories. You can turn to it at any time to find out if you need something, and why you might need it. And, of course, you can ring us at Wigs4U if you feel the need to discuss any aspect of wig wearing.

Read on to find out more about wig accessories and what they are for.

Brushes

It is important that you buy the right hairbrush when you start wearing a wig. A wig brush like the Styling Brush – Black by Hair World (£4.95) is necessary because it has silicone tips to prevent damage to your wig.

The silicone tips stop the brush from snagging on the wefts and monofilament sections of the wig, which can be irreparably damaged.

Caps

There are caps like the Medi cap (£2.95) which are designed to increase the comfort of your wig, make the wig stay on your head more firmly and keep your scalp clean.

It stops the wig from slipping and improves hygiene by trapping your scalp’s natural oils, preventing them from transferring on to the base of the wig.

Washing and changing your wig cap often means you will need to wash your wig less frequently. There are also sleep caps, like Wigs4U HQ’s favourite Ravello – Ocean Blue by Hair World (£12.95).

We love it because it is supersoft, antibacterial, antifungal, and hypoallergenic. It is also thermo regulating and moisture wicking. It keeps you warm at night in bed during the winter and keeps you cool during those hot summer nights.

Clips

Wig clips come in a huge range of different colours and are designed for different types of hair also.

They are placed underneath the wig to hold it onto your head. They can have rubber on them to make them more comfortable to wear.

Combs

Like wig brushes, you need to invest in a wig comb rather than using a normal hair comb when you start wearing a wig.

This is because they are nice and gentle on your wig allowing you to style and brush it without damaging the wig.

Pins

Wig pins are used to keep your wig in place whilst you are styling it. They mean you can comb and brush your wig whilst it is on your head rather than taking it off and placing it on a wig stand first.

Polyurethane Foundation Patch

Polyurethane Foundation Patches are used to make your wig more comfortably if there is no taping in place. It means the wig can be placed firmly on to the scalp much more comfortably.

These patches can be cut and sewn into different areas of the wig, where you feel the need for further padding.

Tape

Wig tape is for keeping your wig in place. Like adhesives, we recommend that you perform a 24-hour patch test on your skin before applying your wig.

Our bestselling 11mt Daily Wear Clear Deluxe Tape (£11.50) is designed to be worn for 1-3 days depending on the temperature (sweating), humidity and body oils. It is also hypoallergenic.

Turbans

Turbans like the Anna Hat Navy & Maxi Scarf Combination by Hair World (£13.90) are a great option to have in your bag on those days when you don’t feel like going out or doing anything.

You can just get dressed and pop on your turban without having to think about anything fiddly.

Wig Stand

We recommend all of our customers purchase a wig stand like our Collapsible wig stand (£5.50) because it allows you to dry your wig naturally once you have washed it.

By drying it on a stand, the base material is prevented from stretching. This wig stand is particularly user-friendly because it can be folded flat in seconds for easy transportation making it perfect for putting in your suitcase!
