Reader Question: Product Rotation

Pink FlowerReader Question:

I am one month into my healthy hair journey, and really need some sound advice. How often do you recommend that I rotate products? Is this with all products or just conditioners? Thank you for your help.

Our Answer:

I’m glad to hear that you have started your healthy hair journey! Product rotation is not an exact science as much of it depends on how often you wash your hair or how often you clarify. In my experience, on using a conditioner 4 times in a row it starts to lose it favorable effect on hair. With some conditioners however I have found that even 3 times in a row is too much so to avoid this the best thing is to have 2-3 different conditioners available and use a different one every time you wash. After 6 weeks or so a good clean with a clarifying shampoo* will get rid of any residue in your hair (this is what causes conditioners to lose their effectiveness). You are then ready to start your cycle again.

I have found that conditioners and moisturizers have more of a tendency to requiring rotation than shampoos because conditioners and moisturizers deposit oil or silicone on the hair to leave it soft. However having two different bottles of shampoo can’t hurt and I certainly do in addition to a clarifying one. Remember to keep a good balance between moisturizing and protein conditioners and you should be fine!

Good luck on your healthy hair journey.
