Simple Holiday Hair Styling Ideas

Holiday hair bunHope you all had a great Christmas! I know I did, everyone ate too much but the new years resolutions and diets start in January right?

If you haven’t had your office party yet, I m sure it’s about to go down and if you missed it there is always New Years Eve.

There are two questions every girl has on their mind at this time of year; number one, how can I top last year’s little black dress? And number two what in the world am I going to do with my hair?

Say we have the dress covered, the hair trends this season are definitely centered on buns and up-dos which are always cool. Here are some hair style ideas you can definitely rock out this year.

1. Bantu Knot Out– This is a classic style very popular amongst curly girls and can look so elegant if done correctly. The key to a great holiday look is minimal separation of the knots once they are dry and you are about to take them down. Try to maintain the definition and individuality of the knots, in other words you should have mini tendrils all over your head that can be accessorized or styled for a glam look instead of that poofiness you can get from over separating.

2. The Bun – the trends don’t lie, a classic bun will never fail you, there are two great ways to wear the bun that has holiday, sexy, ‘I clean up great’, written all over it. The first style is a messy bun – for the messy bun start out with your hair having some kind of texture, either from a twist out a braid out, roller set or wash and go that way the messy part still has some structure to it. Style the bun either low on your head or dead center towards the back. Frame the face with mini tendrils to your liking and voila you’re done!

The second bun style is a neat top knot bun, this can be achieved using a sock bun tool for an absolute perfect look or just old fashion scrunchie and bobby pins*. Oh and yes, please do the red lips and oversized earrings, the classy kind though.

3. French Braids – Remember that classic French braid? That would be the one! There is no doubt that braids are not just for little girls anymore and the key to a great nighttime  look is definitely the simplicity of the style and what you do with the tail portion. To get the best glam look, tuck the ends under to create a braided bun adding accessories for a polished look.

Roller set ponytail4. Roller Set – Ouch! Nothing says sexy like a ton of sexy curls everywhere, the key to a great set is allowing the hair to dry 100 percent. The best advice is to start early or the day before if your hair is super thick and takes forever to dry. Another piece of advice is not to get too ‘produckty’ a great set needs only two things, water for moisture and setting lotion for a light hold. Separation is important as well, use your hands to style the curls, your hands and a whole lot of shaking will give you that tussled un-styled look! Shine her up and go!

5. For the New Years Eve party, your can turn any of the looks above into a classic slick ponytail and go glam glam all over again on ‘em. Ponytails will never go out of fashion, thank goodness! If your hair had a roller set at the first party, wrap it at night for a straighter look when rocking the ponytail. The French braid should give you some nice curl braid definition so the ponytail will look extra wavy when done right, and the bun should give you some stretch as well, perfect for a ponytail.

Mahogany curls also has a wonderful video on using curlformers* for a carefree curly holiday look. I have to say, it never occurred to me to use eco styler gel* with the curlformers* but it makes sense because the gel would help the curls set firmer so the style lasts longer!

How do you plan to wear your hair this holiday season?
