Is It Ok To Share Your Kids’ Pictures On Facebook For Likes?

Close portrait of little mixed race girlIt’s no great surprise that people are passionately proud of their children. Honestly, try to have a conversation with a new mom or dad and they will bore you to tears with endless stories of little Alicia or little Darryl.

Funnily enough when you are at that stage of life yourself, you just can’t help it. When I was a new mom, I could talk constantly about my Jasmine. What she did, how she did it and like word vomit, even though I knew that nobody wanted to hear any more, it just spewed forth uncontrollably (a bit graphic there I know).

Since BHI hit the 20k likes milestone on Facebook I have noticed, a general increase in positive followers, an increase in haters and trolls and of course also an increase in the number of people sharing pictures of their little ones.

This is nothing new of course, it is to be expected that regardless of niche, with an increase in popularity we generally attract a cross section of the population as a whole. Some people are great while some need to work on it.

With the influx of new followers, moms have been queuing up to share photos of their little girls (and boys) natural hair styles and share info on which products they use to anyone who cares to ask. Unfortunately not everyone likes this new direction. While we all like babies in general, they make your heart melt, not everyone cares to turn grown up themed Facebook pages into a Toddlers And Tiaras pageant.

I really need for people to stop pimping out their babies on fb for likes! I’m sick of it! On your own page for family & friends is one thing…On open, adult pages is pimping!

While us parents may think that we live with the cutest little munchkins to ever roam the planet are we missing the fact that on social media we have found a new way to irritate non-parents or those just disinterested? And further, are we unconsciously taking advantage of our kids by sharing their photos aka pimping them out?

For us page owners we see Facebook and other social media as great platforms to keep in touch with readers and promote articles etc but the truth of the matter is that people want to be entertained as much as they want to be taught stuff. You will notice that most of the stuff that I post on our page is mostly for entertainment value while not promoting anything in particular.

It’s the same reason that naptural85 has had so much success with her second lifestyle channel, she is using this fact to her advantage. PS – Her stuff is addictive, it’s basically reality TV!

Yet I don’t mind admitting that I am unsure on what is right for the greater good in this instance. Perhaps it’s because I am blind sighted being a mom myself (I think it’s cool personally).

But for the sake of democracy if you follow BHI, please help us decide: Should we carry on sharing pictures of children on our Facebook page or not? Just respond to the poll or comment below.

EDIT: Final Decision

Taking into account the views of the ladies on our social media accounts plus here on BHI, the general consensus seems to be that most of you don’t mind seeing kids photos as long as it’s about the child’s hair/hairstyle only and the children are not being overexposed.

Quite understandably nobody want to see all overly negative comments accompanying a child’s photo which can sometimes come across as personal attacks on the child or the mother. On the other hand it seems pretty harsh to remove kids pics from our page all together so I hope this will be a happy compromise.

Close up shots of the hairstyle or those with the child’s face partially or fully averted for privacy purposes are fine. We will no longer post general kids natural hair pics on the timeline eg random poses or kids playing etc.

So, if you want to share your child’s picture, please let it be about the child’s hair style only.
