Angela Simmons is certainly a young mogul in the making, when she is not working on her business she will from time to time furnish her fans with some playful pictures of her hair. Today she took the time to give her stylist love on instagram by showing us very fabulous pics of her hair after a fresh flat iron*.

Typically Angela typically wears a weave and as you will see from one of the captions on her Instagram pictures. Even though we have seen many celeb posts of their natural hair in Instagram, Angela’s hair is one of the few that we can truly say looks amazing. She takes really great care of it under the weaves* and we can definitely appreciate that.

This post is really about understanding the importance of maintaining your natural hair underneath your protective style. Many of us do protective styling which is great but some of us tend to leave our natural or relaxed hair alone for long periods of time which can be counter productive. The point of any protective style is the lack of manipulation so that you can retain length but here are three other things you should be doing too.

1. Trimming – We put this one first because there is a common misconception that your hair does not need a trim since your aren’t doing anything with it. If your hair is not damaged then by all means skip a trim or two but for overall maintenance if you want to keep your ends looking lovely and relatively even. If you notice any uneven, split or brittle ends just go ahead and get rid of them. You hair will be protected anyway so you won’t miss the length if you have to remove an inch or two.

2. Deep  conditioning while protecting – Just because your hair is protected is no reason to skimp on deep conditioning* weekly. Wash and DC your hair with watered down products to avoid build up. Read this post for more information on caring for your hair under a weave.

3. 8 weeks max – Do not leave your weave style in longer than 8 weeks! When you have naturally kinky* hair it has a tendency to tangle mat easily so this goes for those who are relaxed too because your roots will always grow back in their natural texture. Leaving your weave* in for longer than 8 weeks regardless of how often you wash or moisturize is just asking for trouble. If you leave your weave* in too long you may find that you lose all your progress detangling matted hair which obviously defeats the purpose of protective styling.
