Our Picks for the Top 6 Hairstyle Trends of 2014

FotorCreated

Ever year as the year starts to come to a close we like to take a look back on what we did, why we did it, what got us hyped, and what just plain blew our minds. In the hair business, things are no different – one fun topic to cover is a look back at hair trends.

In 2014, we saw quite a few changes in the natural hair community; we saw hair gurus with waist length hair suddenly cut it all off; we saw women switching relaxers, and then quickly switching back to natural hair. We saw big chops and fades, and as we discussed yesterday, a ton of crazy sexy color.

This post will have our top 6 hairstyle trends of 2014, so without further ado, ready? “Leggo”! (note to self, do not say “leggo” in 2015!).

1. The Fade (with designs)

Girls getting faded was pretty awesome. We started to finally have fun with our hair, and the look was so damn darn sexy – everybody was in the barber shop. I know guys were probably mad as hec when they relished we were in the shop as well, making note of all their usual Saturday morning shenanigans.

2. The ‘Fro

Do you really think we could realistically have a post like this and not have the ‘Fro even mentioned? Girl, you crazy! The ‘Fro isn’t going anywhere. We saw alot of it on the streets, in print magazines, on the runway, and don’t you forget about Solange at her wedding: that was major. Free Form ‘Fro, Chunky ‘Fro, Two Toned ‘Fro…the style is here to stay, and definitely a hot pick for 2014.

3. The Bantu Knot Out

I think we have finally perfected the Bantu Knot Out, and man have the styles been everything. No-heat curls are always popular for us naturals, and the Bantu Knot Out was amazing; the style was a fave for 2014.

4. Wand Curls

Wand curls are achieved with that little nifty device called a curling wand*. For our girls who do not mind a little heat, this thing was “everythang”! Every time we saw a wand curl set, we were in love…every time!

5. Faux Locs

We had to do it, because…well everyone else is doing it. Faux locs were super popular; they were fun; they were gorgeous, and who wouldn’t want to be loced up for a month or two?

6. Braids or Twists with Shaved Sides

We told you earlier the ladies were doing the most with the big chops and fades. Well, it didn’t stop there; some of us enjoyed our protective styles with shaved sides. There was no leaving this one out of our top six, so there you have it!

What were your top styles for 2014? Did we miss any?
