Guiliana Rancic’s Said That Zendaya’s Locs Looked Like It Smelled Like

Sunday night held one of the most prestigious and glamorous events of the award season, the Academy Awards aka The Oscars. As most of you know, fashion and beauty is a major part of the event. Which celebrity will wear which designer? Will we see makeup trends? How will starlets wear their hair?

We saw a lot of glamorous designs and hair styles that night. Most women chose to be minimal and wear their hair pulled back. Actress, Zendaya Coleman, chose a different approach and debuted her beautiful faux locs on the red carpet.

Faux locs are a trend for the natural hair community right now and Zendaya, who was inspired by a photograph of actress, Lisa Bonet, picked up on that trend and showcased it. She made something that isn’t so mainstream, visible for the masses. Surely her unique sense of style, coupled with her long locs would be recognized and commended right? Wrong.

E! News correspondent and Fashion Police host, Guiliana Rancic went too far on an segment of Fashion Police when she stated that the 18 year old actress “looks like she smells like patchouli* oil and weed”, to which her co-hosts threw their heads back and laughed. Hours later, Zendaya posted this gracious statement on her Twitter page:

We get it Guiliana. You have a job and that job requires you to talk about celebrities and their choices in fashion, hair and beauty after they hit the red carpet.

However, that job does not require you to make blatant ignorant remarks about someone’s hair. Tell me, how does one “look like they smell like patchouli* oil and weed”? Is it because society has stereotyped locs for decades and you decided that you were going to throw those stereotypes around nonchalantly on television?

Here is Giuliana’s lack luster response:

Personally, I thought Zendaya’s locs looked elegant with her gown. They framed her face beautifully. She took a risk with her hair that night and it worked.

When I saw her on the carpet, my immediate thoughts were how pretty and fresh she looked. Naturally, when I watched Fashion Police and heard Guiliana’s remarks, I was disgusted and so was twitter:

I realize that she’s in the business of telling it like it is, but there is always a line that you shouldn’t cross no matter how real you’re trying to keep it.

We loved Vogue’s description of Zendaya’s look and maybe Giuliana can take a few pointers:

We’ll be keeping our eye on you, Zendaya.

I also thought Zendaya’s response to Guiliana was tasteful and gracious. She didn’t wrap it up in a pretty bow and present it to anyone. She was straight to the point and very direct. She read Guiliana and her co-hosts like a book and I enjoyed every word.
