Vogue Says “North West’s Curly Styles Are Inspiring A Generation Of Natural Hair

Over the years Vogue has been known to have some pretty questionable, racially biased and down right crazy articles. On the other hand they are not reprimanded everyday so they also have some great articles as well.

As we navigate this world of opinion sometimes you have to think about what you put your energy into. By energy I mean negative energy or a negative perspective.

Vogue posted an article yesterday titled “How North West’s Curly Styles Are Inspiring a Generation of Natural Hair Girls”

The story basically gave a rendition of how little North has inspired the curls of little girls around the world who look like her.

I’ve been charmed by the sleek styles that Kim and Kanye’s offspring has sported as she sits front row at Fashion Week on her mother’s lap, arriving to ballet class in custom Balmain blazers, or globetrotting to far-flung locales on family trips.

Whether a top bun or a comb-over, North’s pint-sized hair styles complement her fashion-forward play clothes, while remaining refreshingly easy and age-appropriate.

They’ve established little Nori as a kind of hair icon for a nascent and diverse generation of tots rocking their natural curls with unprecedented flair –among them, my two-year-old niece, Isabel.

The responses to this article have been pretty predictable “what about Blue?”, “How is North inspiring a generation of natural hair girls with all the work we have put in?” , “Rolling my eyes at this!” Don’t believe me check it out:

Here are 3 simple reasons you should not be mad at this article

1. To deny that North West is not influential to a huge market of individuals is ridiculous! Did she start the natural hair movement, of course not and the article in no way alluded to that.

2. We do not need to compare North to Blue in terms of the amount of articles praising both girls for their hair influence. For one Blue has had so much negativity about her hair from our own platforms that some of us should not even dare make the comparison.

Why wait for Vogue to do what we should always be doing? – Don’t cry Blue this and Blue that now, when some of us signed a petition against Blue’s hair just a year ago.

3. There is a segment of bi-racial children that can learn from the styles that North sports. We get emails daily from moms with biracial children needing help with their hair. Curly hair ranges from 3A to 4c there is room for all curly girls to be great, regardless of who the named influencer is for that day.

At this point in our natural hair movement we are able to create articles, books, influential pieces, and art about the celebration of natural hair as part of our lives that is no longer ‘unacceptable’.

If you look at the Vogue article as merely a piece of that journey it can shift your energy from less negative to more positive one. Not everything is a battle!
