12 Hairstyles For Your Curly Kids This Holiday Season
The holidays are here, and if you have kids that means figuring out how to style both your hair and theirs. If you don’t want to do the same old ‘two pigtails’ look (which my mom was really good for growing up!), we’ve got you covered. Below are 14 different styles you can try for your curly cutie this holiday season. Comment below and tell us your kids’ favorite hairstyle, or which one you like the most out of our list!
Wild and Free

If you want to showcase their gorgeous tresses, the easiest way to do that would be to let your children wear a blow out or afro. While this may be fun for the day of, your detangling session afterwards may take a little longer than usual.
FroHawk

A frohawk is a great way to style their hair, especially if it’s out in its curly or blown out state. All you need are a few bobby pins* and a gentle bristle brush to put their hair into this style.
A protective styling alternative is to braid their hair upwards on the side and leave it out on the top or braid to the ends. They can sleep with this style without worrying about having to touch it up.
Twist Out

Want to show off their length and curl definition? A twist out on damp or dry hair all elongated curls. Finger detangle and use baby approved products, which use gentler ingredients while still providing hold.
Puff

I don’t know one naturalista (big or small) that can go wrong with a puff! Use a hair tie or headband* and gently brush their hair upwards into a puff or ponytail. Make sure not to pull hair too tightly to avoid stress to their edges.
3 Puffs

What’s better than one puff? Three puffs! This is cute to simply add a different style, or an alternative if their hair can’t fit into one puff yet.
Also, it’s just super adorable! Make sure not to use any hair ties* that have metal pieces, because they can snag hair and cause unnecessary breakage. Instead, use satin hair ties* if you can, or use a material that won’t be too harsh on hair.
Braids/Plaits

Want to protective style completely? Braids may be your answer. Instead of using extension hair, create the braids with your kids’ real hair.
The best part is that not only will your child’s hair be styled for the holidays, but you can also unravel the braids for a beautiful braid out! If you want longer hold and definition for when you finally take their braids out, use a gel and hair combination. Otherwise, use a hair cream and oil for shine and lightweight hair.
Perm Rod Set

Now this is just too cute for words! If you have the patience, sit down and do a perm rod set on their hair. The resulting curls will be the perfect holiday hairstyle, and with proper maintenance they will last for a few days. Put a satin bonnet* on her head for the night to prevent rubbing or dryness.
Braided Updo

This cute braided updo is another great style. It involves a combination of cornrows, braids, and twists. Like the picture, you can add braids as a side bang to frame her face. If you don’t feel comfortable doing these kinds of braids, go to a professional hair braider or salon.
Blowout and Flexi Rods*

She’ll be photo ready with a nicely done Flexi rod* set! You can blow dry her hair, or you can stretch it overnight if you’d like a heatless option.
You can leave the Flexi rods* in overnight as well, or if you want to save her from our all familiar struggle of sleeping with Flexi rods*, let it set for an hour or two under a hair dryer*.
Chic Tuck and Roll Updo

If you previously straightened their hair and are trying to preserve the style, this updo is the perfect style! Part the hair in two sections, and roll the back section up towards the front. Secure with a Bobby pin then twist both sections together into a bun.
Half Up / Half Down

A style very popular among many of us naturals, we know it’s easy to recreate. Section hair then brush front section into a bun. Leave the rest out free. You can do a wash n go on their hair, twist out, etc.
Updo with Hair Accessory

In addition to being a cute style, an updo will protect your child’s ends from damage during play time. A hair accessory like a headband*, pin, flower can complement the entire outfit.
There are tons of online brands on sites like Etsy and Instagram that sell hair accessories. These are some of our favorites! Comment below with your favorite holiday kiddie hair styles!
