A Quit Note On Trims - They Are Not the Enemy!

I don’t want to speak for everyone, but I do know a common misconception that I had for the longest is that you don’t need to get trims.

For as long as I could remember, or at least as long as I started being responsible for taking care of my own hair, I would try to go without trims for as long as possible.

Whenever I would go to the salon to get my hair done my stylist would chastise me because she couldn’t believe I let my ends get so raggedy! I would apologize, and say the usual “I’ll do better next time” or “I won’t let it get that bad again, and I’ll come back in 6 weeks.”

However, in my mind what I was really thinking was, “my hair isn’t even that bad, and she just wants to get that extra 15 dollars from the trim.”

However, if you have a stylist who actually cares about the health of your hair, she should be telling you things you don’t necessarily want to hear, and you can always do your own research to double check. It wasn’t until I was trying to be cheap and do my hair myself more frequently, that I realized my hair was shedding a lot more than normal, and I wasn’t getting trims, and also wasn’t retaining any length either.

So, as much as I hated to admit it, my stylist was right. Now, as a natural, I look forward to my trims and treatments. My curls pop and my hair looks 10 times healthier after I get trimmed, and there is also very little shedding. One of the signs that you might need a trim, is the shedding.

It’s natural for hair to shed, but if you look down in your sink while doing your hair, and you see a pool of shredded ends, you need to schedule a trim as soon as possible, or you will continue to loose length.

Now the keyword there, is to retain length. I am not saying that getting regular trims will magically make your hair grow faster than it normally would, but if you have split ends and aren’t getting them trimmed, the ends will just continue to split and shed, hence no length retention.

When was the last time you got a trim?
