“What’s so great about using JBCO?” Well, don’t you know you can use castor oil* for massaging your scalp as well as help to lay down your edges, if you don’t want to use gel or edge tamer. “So what’s so great about extra virgin olive oil*?” You can use this oil to deep condition your hair. “And coconut oil?” Well coconut* oil can be used for practically everything!

Seriously, when I first starting my healthy hair journey, I heard about all the benefits of using natural oils in your hair for it to be and remain healthy.

After a while, my notebook was filled with different oils and recipes and I was completely confused. Supposedly every single oil has it’s own purpose that it can be use in a hair regimen.

So I learned my own hair and purchased my oils based on my hair needs instead of purchasing oils that I had no idea about nor how to use them. With that said here are 6 ways to use oils in your hair regimen:

Detangling your hair

Detangling is a very important step of healthy hair care. This may seem scary and torturous for some, but it doesn’t have to be so hard to do. Always detangle your hair before washing and after a protective style to rid your hair of the shed hair, so your hair won’t be matted and tangled even more.

Coconut* oil tends to be one of the best oils to help detangle the hair and to remove the shed hair quite easily. It is a great one to also softens the hair, moisturize your hair strands, prevents any damage to your hair, and can go right into doing a hot oil treatment after detangling. It’s a win-win-win situation right here.

For those with fine, natural hair coconut oil* would be a great oil to help detangle your hair in a less stressful way. Be sure to warm it up by rubbing the oil in your hands before applying.

Avocado oil* is another oil to help detangle your hair. It’s pretty light weight, which allows this oil to seep easily into the hair to help melt the tangles away and to help fight breakage.

Hot oil treatment

A hot oil treatment adds extra conditions benefits for your hair before washing. This is awesome for those who are trying to combat dry and damaged hair because of heating tools, hair chemical, and even the environment (humidity, blazing sun, blistering cold, etc).

Hot oil treatments tend to work best with conditioning oils, that are high in fat and are nourishing to the hair, which adds moisture and strength as well.

Coconut oil* tends to be a big winner for hot oil treatments, but the colder months do cause the coconut oil to solidify (under 76 degrees).

Olive oil* is the next best oil to those who may be allergic to coconut, will deeply penetrate the hair shaft to strengthen it, will stimulate hair growth, soften hair, and will prevent damage to the hair from the sulfate-shampoos and heavy protein treatments.

If you find that your store-bought deep conditioner* is not working for you, don’t throw it out! Add natural oils to boost your conditioner by adding a few tea spoons of olive oil, castor oil*, and/or avocado oil*.

If you are a kitchenista and enjoy creating your own products, create your own conditioning recipe with oils of your choice for softer and moisturized hair.

For those with fine hair, add an egg to your conditioning mix for a protein treatment to strengthen your hair strands. Make sure to focus more on the ends of your hair than the roots.

Seal the moisture

You may have heard this phrase over and over again, but it has great meaning to it. Whenever you add water or a moisturizer to your hair, you don’t want the product to evaporate from your hair and end up with a bird’s nest on your head. Whenever you moisturize your hair, be sure to seal the moisture with an oil of your choice.

Try using sweet almond oil*, grapeseed oil*, or argan oil* that will stay on the surface of the strand instead of absorbing inside.

Sealing the moisture with an oil will help to prevent split ends and breakage, will keep your hair moisturized, and will help retain length. For extra points, add a cream or butter to your ends as well to accomplish the LOC method!

Enhance your water mist

If you are always on-the-go, a very busy mom, or have a protective style full of braids, then add your oil to your water mist.

Instead of taking the time to add each product to your hair for maximum moisture and sealing, using your water mist to literally “mist and go.” If you have time, run the water and the oil down your hair strands to make sure you do full coverage. Now you are ready to go out the door!

Promote growth by massaging

Scalp massages stimulates hair growth and is great for hairlines that have thinned out with TOO TIGHT styling options. Now your scalp promotes its own natural oils – called sebum – that you can use to massage your scalp with, no problem.

However, if you are looking for maximum results to promote growth or experience dry scalp, add an oil to your regimen for massaging your scalp.

You can use a light oil (jojoba) or a heavier oil (castor) depending on your hair needs. Just dip your finger in your oil and move the ball of your fingers in a circular motion on your scalp. Be sure not to scratch your scalp and give your baby hairs on your hairline some love as well.
