Well, this is turning out to be a great end to 2015 for black women. Ava DuVernay’s black doll sold out within minutes, and the same thing happened to Patti LaBelle’s pies (after a bit of promotion, of course).

In the UK, black author Casey Elisha has joined this group. Her new book, Love Thy Fro, launched on December 6 at The Children’s Library in Deptford, and it had completely sold out by Monday, December 7.

The book is about encouraging young black girls to love their hair, because it’s common for them to have struggles accepting their hair.

The 24-year-old writer couldn’t believe the reception her book received. When she discovered that it had taken just two days for her book to completely sell out, she was shocked; she had never expected that. Instead, Casey had anticipated that the book would take a while before it gained traction. She thought that people would learn about it and gradually be sold on her ideas.

Even though she believed in her book, she never expected that other people would do the same, especially in such a short time span.

The book itself is about Kemi, a young girl who loves her big, curly afro. Aimed at children 5 to 8 years old, Love Thy Fro shows girls why it’s important to embrace their “non-typical” hair and love themselves.

So, what inspired Casey to write it? Lots of conversations with other people along with reflections on herself as she recalled her previous issues with her hair.

I say this is among the most important books to come out this year. Because of race, a black growing up in a predominantly white society will face discrimination based on her looks, and she might come to hate her hair.

Love Thy Fro shows young black girls that there’s nothing wrong with them, and their hair is perfectly fine the way it is. If you have a black daughter, this book is among the best gifts you can ever give her.
