My Guy Friend Thought All Weaves Smelled Bad - Honey Let Me School You!

It’s no secret that I love a good protective style, especially now during the cold winter season. I mean, who has time to spend time in the morning, every morning, on their hair?

I’d rather spend that extra time hitting the snooze button on  my alarm, and getting an extra few minutes of sleep.

My protective style of choice is currently curly crochet braids- I get the convenience of a protective style, and it’s also versatile and looks very natural. However, the other night I was on the phone with one of my guy friends and we got on the topic of hair.

I casually mentioned that I love changing up my hair style, and he was surprised because all this time he assumed that my hair was all mine.

He then proceeded to tell me that he doesn’t like weaves* because they stink and women keep them in their heads for months and have no way of washing their hair underneath.

I was slightly annoyed when he said that because, my hair certainly doesn’t stink, and I don’t keep any protective style in for more than 6-8 weeks, or less.

Not to mention, I really hate generalizations. Just because one or two women had a weave* that was kept in too long, and smelled, doesn’t mean that all weaves* do. Even though I was a bit annoyed, I did realize that this is a common misconception now a days with guys.

Many men love to say “I want a girl who is all natural” “I want a girl who doesn’t do this or doesn’t do that” but they really haven’t done much research, or are speaking off of limited experience.

So, being the teacher that I am, I proceeded to school him on the process. I told him that you can wash weaves while they are in, and if the weave* stinks then that means that it either didn’t dry all the way after washing, or it probably does need to be taken out.

After the 8 week mark the style is no longer protective, but harmful. Also, we don’t want these men thinking our weaves smell!
