What My 5yr Old Taught Me About Her ‘Horn Style’

Little girl
My youngest daughter came home from school excited that she is the only one in her class who has hair that stands straight up. She must have been 5 at that time and she is now 7.

You see she was in her first year of school but she knew that her hair was different from everyone else. However, because she was coming from a family where her mum and sister had hair like hers, she was comfortable with her hair. She did not and still does not have any insecurities about how she looks or her hair.

Anyway I used to wash her hair and then put it in pigtails. I would then tie a headscarf around her head to make her pig tails lie down but my daughter would push the pigtails up to create what she called ‘horns’.

It was hilarious to her and what I noticed was instead of her feeling insecure because her hair was different she chose to look at good things about her hair and how muh fun her hair was/is to her. At school her friends were all wondering how she made her hair stand like that and she instead of sharing her secret she basked in the mystery of it all.

I tell this story because I think there is a lesson that was taught by my then 5yr old. I know so many women who are still insecure about their hair and want to know how to rid themselves of those insecurities. The quick and only answer to that is simply to change your mindset.

The reason we get offended when people say negative things about our hair is because they are just voicing what we believe about ourselves.

If we had a positive self-image we will be able to act like my daughter and speak positive things about our hair and eventually learn to love and embrace it just as it is. Additionally if you happen to have friends who are negative eventually your positive outlook will change theres. Little children can teach you the darnest things!
