Edges can make or break a hairstyle, and unfortunately, a lot of natural and relaxed ladies struggle with keeping their edges tamed and slicked how they want them to be.

There are tons of products dedicated to edge maintenance, but let’s be honest–some of them just don’t work, and even some of our favorite products have their cons. Because of this, we must tweak and combine our favorite hair products to keep our edges tamed and free of frizziness and lifting. Below are 3 fab favorite product combinations that keep my edges laid and slayed.

Eco Styler Olive Oil Styling Gel and Jamaican Black Castor Oil

If you’ve been reading up on hairstyles and products at all then you’ve probably heard about EcoStyler* products and Jamaican Black Castor Oil* one or twenty times. These two products are staples in hair regimens everywhere because they work wonders when used individually, but a lot of people don’t know that the two together are actually a great combo for laying your edges.

JBCO* seals in moisture, adds shine, and even promotes growth. Although those benefits are great, the real magic comes from it’s consistency. Because the oil is so thick and heavy, it weighs down the hair and allows you to effortlessly style your edges without any frizziness or flyaways.

Now let’s be real, oil alone is NOT going to keep your edges from lifting and definitely won’t hold down your baby hairs or any other style. So what do you do? Set the style with EcoStyler Olive Oil* Styling Gel. Unlike a lot of other hair gels, EcoStyler Olive Oil* Styling Gel is water based, alcohol-free, and locks in moisture with olive oil*.

The best way to apply these two products is to wet your edges before applying a generous amount of JBCO*, brush them down and style, and then lay a thin layer of EcoStyler* Gel over your edges. For the best results, tightly tie down your edges with a scarf and remove after a few minutes.

This combo is best for those of you who struggle with dryness and frizzy hair and/or slicking down your edges while wearing a straight hairstyle.

Gorilla SnotCarol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Edge Control and Gorilla Snot

Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Edge Control is one of the best edge controls I’ve ever tried. It is packed with moisturizing ingredients (like water and aloe) which are sealed with macadamia oil and honey.

It slicks down your edges without the stickiness of pomades and waxes and the crunchiness of gel; however, this product lifts after a little so I always have to pair it with a gel to ensure that my edges won’t puff up.

That’s where gorilla snot comes in. Gorilla Snot, or Moco De Gorilla, is basically an extra hold hair gel. It wasn’t designed to suit natural hair (or even relaxed hair for that matter), but it works perfectly on all hair types. This gel can be a little drying, so moisturizing beforehand would be a smart idea.

This combination works best for those sleek updos where your edges seem to just puff and frizz away from the rest of your hair. Because, the edge control applies dry and not wet, the best way to apply it is to rub it between the palms of your hands slick it on your edges and do the same with the Gorilla Snot. A hard bristled brush and a toothbrush are the best for laying and blending your edges with these products

Aloe Vera Gel and Shea Moisture Coconut Hibiscus Curl and Style Milk

Sometimes I don’t want my edges to be totally slicked down–especially when I’m rocking a wash and go or small perm rod curls. However, my curls usually end up puffy. In this instance, I stay away from edge controls, pomades, and hard-drying gel because I want my edges to be defined curls.

Shea Moisture* Coconut Hibiscus Curl and Style Milk is perfect because it has natural and organic ingredients like shea butter*, coconut oil*, silk protein, and Japanese honeysuckle. The formula is rich like a leave-in conditioner* and can be easily worked through your edges. The best part is that it defines the smallest and tightest of curls and leaves them moisturized with a healthy shine.

Because my curls seem to fall and frizz throughout the day, I further define and set the curl with 100% aloe vera gel*. It’s all natural, doesn’t make your hair crunchy or hard, and leaves the curls around your edges soft and bouncy.
The best way to apply the products to your edges is to spritz the perimeter of your head and gently finger comb through it before coating it with the curl and style milk. If you are going to manipulate your curls, do it before you apply aloe vera gel*.

If you don’t usually have a whole lot of definition around your edges, you can try using a diffuser, curling wand*, finger coils, twist and braid outs, and other methods to bring curls forward.
