As natural and relaxed women, we want to be able to experiment with our hair styles and color without suffering any damage; this thought alone poses a dilemma when we start dying our hair. We go to our local beauty supply store, buy a box of dye that we watched a million YouTube reviews on, we dye our hair, and for the time being? We love it.

But then something awful happens. Our hair color begins to fade and we don’t want to dye it again in fear that we’ll damage our hair; it can be a vicious cycle. Luckily, there are some all natural alternatives we can use to liven up our dull, faded locks once again! Below are 3 all natural DIY hair masks to brighten up your dull kinks and curls.

Carrot Top– For orange hair or golden undertones and highlights

What You Will Need:

1 Whole Lemon

3 Tbsp. Honey

1 Tbsp. Cinnamon

1 Tbsp. of Vitamin C* Powder

Plastic Shower Cap*

Blow Dryer* (optional)

Directions:

Mix lemon juice from one whole lemon, 3 tablespoons of honey, 1 tablespoon of cinnamon, and 1 tablespoon of vitamin C* powder with a wooden spoon in a medium size bowl.

Make sure the ingredients are thoroughly mixed or blended before applying it to your freshly washed damp hair.

Gently wrap your hair up and cover it with a plastic shower cap* for 45 minutes. To speed up the lightening process, sit outside in the sun or blow dry your hair on medium heat for 20-25 minutes.

Rinse your hair thoroughly and apply a leave in conditioner* or moisturizer to keep your hair hydrated. Apply the mixture three times a week until you’ve reached the desired color.

Red Head– For all variations of red and burgundy

What You Will Need:

3 Carrots

1/2 cup of Cranberries

2 Tbsp of Honey

2 Tbsp of Beetroot juice

3 Tbsp. of Plain Yogurt

Shower Cap

Directions:

Chop the three raw carrots into chunks and throw them into a food processor* or blender, making a paste. Do the same thing with the 1/2 cup of cranberries, and then mix the two ingredients together.

In the same bowl as the cranberries and carrots, dump in 3 tablespoons of plain yogurt, 2 tablespoons of beetroot juice, and 2 tablespoons of honey. Mix until it forms a paste, apply it to your freshly washed, damp hair, and then cover your hair with a shower cap of any kind.

Leave the mix on for 20-25 minutes and then thoroughly rinse from your hair. This mix should brighten and soften your hair almost instantaneously so you can apply whenever you need it.

Key Ingredients/Factors:

Lemon– Lemon is one of the lightening properties in the above recipes, but it also is a good source of vitamin C*, promotes hair growth, and closes hair follicles. It must always be mixed with other ingredients because it is far too strong, acidic, and drying to be used alone. Honey* and plain yogurt are some of the best ingredients to pair with lemon.

Beetroot juice– Beetroot is filled with antioxidants and is a natural detoxifier. However, the reddish tint of beetroot juice makes red hair–natural or died–more vibrant and rich in color. It’s often used as an all natural, organic hair dye because of the color it leaves.

Honey– Honey acts as a humectant, meaning that it helps to retain moisture. It also has anti-bacterial properties that help keep the scalp clean and clear from clogged pores, dandruff, and other pesky problems. Honey is also a great conditioner and gives your hair a beautiful, healthy-looking luster and shine.

Cinnamon– Cinnamon prevents fungus and bacteria from growing on the scalp, which creates a clean and clear environment for hair growth and maintaining of hair health. And like lemon, it serves as a natural hair lightener when mixed with other ingredients.

Heat– Whether from the sun or a blow dryer*, heat is an important factor in all of these recipes because it speeds up the lightening process. Of course, when dealing with your hair and heat you need to protect it in some way so the shower cap is just added protection.
