I Used To Be That Girl - Relaxers Made Me Stop Working Out

black woman at the gym
I’ve always been an athletic girl; for as long as I can remember my mother had me in soccer, basketball, and then when I got to middle school I started running track, and it stuck with me throughout college and even financed my tuition through a full scholarship. Along with being uber athletic, I was also a bit of a tomboy.

Even after college and as a young adult I still kept an active lifestyle and made it my goal to stay in the gym and make sure I went at least 3 times a week. However, the older I got, the more interested I became in being girly, and I also got my first relaxer. Since I was a tomboy, I would always keep my hair in either braids or a top bun, and it was perfect because it didn’t get in the way of my athletic lifestyle.

When I first got my relaxer, it was like a light switch went off because I started embracing my feminine side more and more. I started wearing heels, dresses, and started working out less and less. I fell into the trap of not wanting sweat out my hair with working out.

When I worked out as a natural it didn’t really matter, because I never wore my hair in straight styles. I had heard of many women who use their hair as an excuse to not work out, and I always judged them or thought they were exaggerating until I was living it.

2 years had passed before I finally said enough was enough and decided that I couldn’t let my hair stop me from doing something that I used to love. I invested in some cute scarfs and wraps and decided to keep my hair wrapped when I worked out, even if I looked silly, at least my style would be saved.

That technique worked for me, what do you do to save your style in the gym? Comment below!
