Transitioning is one of those things that may give us a ton of unnecessary issues, but we put up with it anyway for the sake of a goal we need to reach. With that being said, it is one of the greatest things to experience during a healthy hair journey because it teaches you a lot about your hair and yourself.

You know what’s greater, though? Cutting off the last of your relaxed ends and completing your transition! Sure, it’s not an event that’s celebrated by millions worldwide, but it’s your own personal achievement, and that’s just as great.

Now that your transition is finally over and you are completely natural, there are a few things you can do to turn a new leaf. Below are some suggestions to help you kick off your personal, mini-celebration.

Take Your “After” Pictures

Most people who lose a bunch of weight after a fitness and health journey take “before and after” pictures to show their amazing transformations. In my opinion, women who have successfully transitioned into healthy, natural hair should do the same!

You spent months, and even years, transitioning from relaxed to natural, and you deserve to see all of your progress and hard work displayed in a beautiful picture. Let’s be real, transitioning isn’t a piece of cake. It takes discipline, trial and error, and a lot of maintenance to get to where you want. Being able to deal with all of that for months on end and come out of it successfully is a compliment.

An “After” picture will not only show you how much progress you’ve made, but it’s a great reminder that you can accomplish any hair goal that you desire.

Set New Goals

When you’re transitioning, your goal is essentially one thing: healthily grow out your natural hair without too much fuss from your relaxed ends. Well, now that there are no relaxed ends, you need to set a new goal!

Maybe you’ll start a journey to waist-length kinks and curls, or perhaps you just want to be able to keep your hair healthy so you can eventually treat yourself to a new cut and color next year. Whatever your goals may be, write them down and get started!

If you need help forming your goals, think about what you truly want, research what it takes to get there, and then write them down in small, achievable goals.

productsTreat Yourself To Some New Products

When I was transitioning, the only thing I could use was water, leave in conditioner*, and my oil of choice; my hair was too many textures and far too fragile to do anything else. However, now that I am natural, I am trying any and everything for my hair.

You are no longer transitioning, so guess what? Your regimen may not be what you need anymore. Before you had to worry about strengthening your line of demarcation, making sure products that worked for your natural hair also worked for your relaxed hair, and a ton of other things.

No more of that! Use this as an excuse to revamp your hair-care collection and ball out! Find new products that work for you and enjoy your new natural mane.

 Let Your Hair Down

Sometimes when you’re transitioning, wearing your hair down is not an option. It can be a real issue trying to blend your natural and relaxed hair together. To celebrate not being confined to updos any longer, try wearing your hair down for a little while!

Try a cute twist/braid out, or even better, do a wash and go! This isn’t a huge step to take, but it’ll help you get used to working with just your natural hair. Personally, my favorite style after transitioning was a super defined, half up/half down hairstyle with a top knot.

If you’re looking for cute hairstyle similar to that, or want completely new looks to try, BHI’s Pinterest and Instagram pages are full of great natural hair inspiration.

Congratulate yourself

Congratulations, sis! You did it. After months of having half curly/half straight hair, getting fed up and wanting to cut your hair off completely, crying into an empty jar because you just ran out of coconut oil* in the middle of detangling, you finally did it.

All jokes aside, transitioning is definitely not for the faint of heart (especially if you did it over the course of a few years), and you’re a real trooper if you can pull it off. A lot of people don’t know that often times, going natural aligns with other major changes in your life.

For me, it was a spiritual journey just as much as it was about my hair. I was becoming someone new on the inside, and my “outside” had to match. Whatever your journey consisted of, congratulate yourself; you finally did it.
