During the Summer, gels are typically in heavy rotation and if you are working on a tight budget and want some healthy gel choices here are some all-natural gels to consider for your hair.

Through my own personal research and speaking with other curlistas/naturalistas, I discovered that the aloe vera plant and flax seeds have major benefits for the hair!

For instance, aloe vera when turned into a gel (there are benefits using it in its juice form with your favorite conditioner) helps to get rid of frizz, prevents dandruff, helps with detangling and promotes hair growth.

You can purchase aloe vera gel at your local drugstore. I purchased a bottle by Fruit of the Earth for $1.99 at my local Walgreens.

Another brand is Lily of the Desert which can be found at any drug or health food store. Aloe Vera Gel* does NOT leave my hair dry or flaky; it actually replenishes and refreshes my curls without weighing my hair down. I highly recommend this product if you’re looking for a natural inexpensive gel.

Flax Seed has many benefits when converted into a gel. This gel helps keep curls moisturized, soft and shiny, promotes hair growth and gives your curls great definition and texture.  A bag of flax seeds can cost you $2-$10 depending on the size, purchase a bag at any grocery store.

To extract the gel from the flax seeds, boil ½ a cup of flax seeds on low/medium heat in a saucepan.

Once you start to see a white frothy liquid form, turn off your stove and pour the liquid and remaining flax seeds into a strainer.

Pour the flaxseed gel from a strainer into a mixing bowl and add your favorite oils* and kinds of butter (you could also add aloe vera gel*). Mix the flax seed gel and oils* together, place in a container and store in the refrigerator.
