3 Things To Consider When A Natural Hair Tutorial Does Not Work For You

youtube videosHow many times have you searched YouTube for a new “quick and easy” hair-do to try, and when you see the results it’s totally different from what you expected? I have had this happen quite a few times, ultimately blaming it on the fact that I missed a step or hadn’t done one of the steps properly.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m so grateful for the video platform of YouTube! Without this connection, we wouldn’t be able to perform DIY how-tos and share information across energy waves.

With that said if you find that a natural hair tutorial does not work for you, consider these three things:

Curl Pattern

One of the things to remember when your style doesn’t end up coming out exactly the same as your favorite curly enthusiast/blogger is that everyone’s curl pattern and hair, in general, is different.

Needless to say, if a girl who has type 4c hair and tries to emulate a style from a girl with looser curls say type 3a or 3b hair, the style may not come out identical as the tutorial indicates.

Also, don’t get completely discouraged. There are techniques that you could still learn from the 3a/3b curly/natural girl. You may come across more styles from her page that talk about DIY treatments or some of the hair vitamins* that promote hair growth!

Products

I also think the right hair products shape and play a significant role in our day to day maintenance of our hair. There is no manual saying that you have to use the exact products that are used in the tutorial video.

However, I’ve found that it’s helpful to use something similar. If a tutorial lists a butter or curl crème with a leave-in and oil of some sort (Argan, coconut*, grapeseed* etc.) then I try to use the product types that are listed or at least something close to it.

For instance, if you don’t have grapeseed oil* but you have Argan, then, by all means, use what you have.

If the tutorial didn’t work for you still show your support

Remember to support your fellow curly girl. I am following so many curly enthusiasts on Instagram and YouTube.

Like or subscribe and even comment to start a conversation about some of your favorite styles or techniques.

If you have an easier way of doing a style, suggest that easy way or suggest how you would do it for your individual circumstance. The natural hair journey may not the same for everyone which is what makes it interesting.
