It is summer and the schools have been out for the students and they are playing outside. Of course, as a college student, I have to get regular exercise and that causes me to sweat. I still want to keep my braids but the build up from the sweat can cause my scalp to itch.

See my problem? I faced a dilemma of either choosing to quit exercising, which is never going to happen or adapt to the lifestyle. I chose to adapt to the lifestyle by using two products. One is the African Royale spray and the other is a combination I made by myself.

  1. Jamaican Black Castor Oil
  2. Peppermint Oil (essential oil)
  3. Tea Tree Oil (essential oil)
  4. Coconut Oil (base oil)

Castor Oil helps with hair by providing an improvement of scalp circulation, it can regrow and moisturizes hair, it is a very good at sealing moisture in the hair, and it helps restore hair when hair is thinning. Castor oil* is good for conditioning the hair and making the hair fuller.

Peppermint Oil* helps with hair by stimulating the scalp, wake up and energize the mind, the oil can remove the lice and dandruff, which contribute to itching, fights hair loss, thicken hair and restores hair.

Tea Tree Oil helps with hair by soothing dry itchy scalps, reduces dandruff and hair loss, stimulates blood circulation which can speed up the growth in one’s hair, can cure fungus and bacterial hair infections, can prevent lice, it can treat skin conditions that may affect you scalp.

Coconut Oil* helps with hair by moisturizing the hair shaft, penetrating it so that it may be strengthened, it prevents split ends, helps prevent hair loss, it reduces protein loss, it has antifungal and antibacterial properties which can be beneficial to hair growth and against itching.

So first you would need a spray bottle, which you can get at your local beauty store or online. You would want to start with your base or carrier oil. I used coconut oil* as my carrier oil then the castor oil, peppermint oil, and tea tree oil*.

The ratio of the mixture: coconut oil is 1/2, 1/4 castor oil*, 1/8 peppermint oil*, 1/8 tea tree oil*. You can add other oils for the scent and that’s really it. My hair does not itch as much and my hair did grow more. I have been using this mixture for a few weeks while wearing crochet braids.
