Would You Rock It? The ‘Floral Fro’ Is A Trend That’s Here To Stay

Last Spring, a trend called the “floral fro” and sometimes referred to as, “afro bloomin'”, emerged onto both the fashion and natural hair scene and was a hit. It’s exactly what it sounds like: placing flowers in your afro. Slightly different than a flower halo or the traditional one-flower by the ear look, a floral fro is basically positioning flowers or plants all throughout your afro.

At first, it started off ass a spring and summer trend, but stayed strong throughout fall and winter as women started to use darker flowers and plants to match the existing trends of the fall and winter seasons. Now, the trend is being used to show off daring natural hairstyles, spice up a plain selfie, and some photographers are even beginning to utilize it for breathtaking natural hair portraits.

Do you ladies remember when artist Pierre Jean-Louis took portraits of natural women and turned their afros into galaxies and beautiful scenic views? It’s a lot like that, except it is not a painting–but something you can wear in everyday life.

Admittedly, I loved the look but I wasn’t so sure that it was a practical trend for day to day wear. There were too many “what ifs” attached to it!

“What if the flowers falls out?”

“If we’re using real flowers, will insects be attracted to me?”

“What If I want to put my hair up? What do I do with all of the flowers?”

Personally, I wouldn’t wear it out as an “everyday” look because, let’ be real, I’m a bit of a lazy natural and I’m also not that bold with my look in the first place. But because I love the aesthetic of the flowers in my fro, I’m definitely going to be using a ton of the bright flowers and orange leaves in my hair for my ‘end of summer, beginning of fall selfies in the near future!

Ladies, what do you think about the ‘Floral Fro’ trend? Would it be something you’re willing to try? Comment below!
