My Simple Hair Care Regimen For Beginners

regimenYou have searched all over and you just cannot find a good hair regimen to fit all of your styling needs. Well have no fear, this article can let you in on some tips on how I have maintained my hair for years! This is not a fool proof recipe so you may not get the same results, but these are suggestions that you can try to have a simple girl’s routine, but still retain length, sheen, and moisture.

Please note that you may notice that some of these products I suggest are not all not all natural because organic, virgin, and natural products are more expensive and some products just work better for my hair.

My staple products:

  1. Shampoo: I put my shampoo in a coloring bottle with water in order to clean the scalp as much as possible before I wash the rest of my hair. You can purchase a sulfate free shampoo* that suits you. I am still on the hunt for that perfect one so in the meantime I dilute the ones on the shelves.
  2. Conditioner: Suave Professionals Almond + Shea Butter Shampoo
  3. Leave-in: Water + apple cider vinegar*, African Royale sheen spray
  4. Oil : Mixture of Coconut oil + Jamaican Black castor oil*+ tea tree oil*+ peppermint oil*.
  5. Pomade: Mango Butter Daily Hair Dress
  6. Gel: Eco Styler Gel with Argan Oil
  7. Must haves: Wide tooth comb,

What does a normal wash day look like for me

My general hair care regimen and routines are very simple. I start my process by separating the hair in four sections to begin all processes.

With de-tangling in mind, I try not to use any products that will cause build up. Diluting apple cider vinegar* with water will have the effect of clarifying the scalp because of its antifungal and antibacterial properties.

You can use Rose water, some drops of tea tree oil*, and glycerin. I use a wide-tooth comb to de-tangle my curls from the ends to the root. Tip: Be patient and careful.

Daily Regimen

Every day, I try to have protein and eat my vegetables if I have access to them. I try to stay away from soda at all cost. Tip: Eating healthier will not only save your life, but also your hair benefits greatly from it.

I also try to moisturize my hair daily with water then seal it with an oil spritz I made. After that, I apply a creme or pomade. Tip: Save money on shea butter by buying in bulk rather than buying other cremes.

Weekly Regimen

Every week I take inventory of the items I have for styling so that I can get them by either online shopping or going to the store. I clarify my hair with ACV. I perform oil massages to help with my itchy scalp and I recommend them for anyone.

Biweekly Regimen

After the hair is combed out and while it is still wet, I take some shampoo and pour it into the bottle with water and wash my scalp. Many use scalp brushes which can fight against an itchy scalp caused by dandruff, psoriasis, anti-flaking, and reduce any further damage to the scalp.

While my hair is still wet I use a small amount of my conditioner and smooth it into my hair very slowly and carefully. After the conditioner is in, I put a processing cap on and leave it for 30 minutes.

I wash out my hair and style every two weeks; I tend to leave my hair in two-strand twists. Every so often I can experiment with my hair and I would encourage you to as well.

Tip: Please watch a tutorial. At the very least, make sure you become informed about the basics of hair care, hair styling, and trends you want to try.

black hairMonthly Regimen

Every month, I use a hot oil treatment to freshen and add shine to my hair. I also deep condition monthly. Tip: Use a non-plastic bowl or plate for the process; stainless steel works best for holding the hot oil.

Curl Definition Regimen

My regimen for getting my hair defined is a little different than my general care regimen. It is pretty easy to get my hair to be curly since it is naturally that way right out of the shower (when I shampoo my curl pattern is looser).

So, I am actually talking about defining my curls and I am a pretty simple person. All I need to define my curls is a gel, a rat-tail comb, and water. I section off my hair into small pieces (1 inch is fine).

I spritz water while holding the section vertically, I put a pea-sized amount of Eco styler gel* on my finger and smooth the gel into the section. Then I comb the section with the rat-tail comb and repeat that for the whole head of hair. I scrunch my hair sections and shake out the hair. I sometimes comb my hair with a wide-tooth comb.

Pineappling my hair at night with a scarf works well to maintain my curls.

What is my hair type

My hair type has changed in the past few years; when I was younger my hair was a lot thicker and had less loose curls. I have 4A, 4B and maybe some 4C hair.

I have low porosity hair: My hair is difficult to get and retain moisture, and it dries rather quickly when it gets the moisture, which is why I moisturize and seal daily.

Products that work for my hair type: My hair loves water so I make sure it gets a lot of water, clarifying shampoo*, coconut* milk, penetrating oils* like coconut oil*, jojoba oil*, and glycerin. Low porosity hair can benefit from hair masks, but do not get one if the first product is a heavy oil or creme.
