Doing DIY Hair Masks Is My Secret Weapon To Growing Out My Own Healthy Hair

I am so excited to share with you that my secret to growing your hair is right there in your kitchen. Do not get me wrong, DIY is not for everyone. To this day people still look at me like I am crazy when I tell them I put eggs in my hair.

“You put eggs in your hair?”

“Yes, I do, but you put sodium lauryl sulfate in your’s so…” – #judgefreezone

Even though the store-bought hair masks are usually higher in quality and usually last longer, there are a few reasons I use DIY hair masks.

Reasons I prefer to make my own hair masks

Price:

Price is very important to college students, so we have to make sure that what we are doing to our hair fits into our budget.

Buying eggs, olive oil, apple cider vinegar*, and different oils can be costly, but since you may make breakfast with eggs and the oil it is better. Instead of buying eggs, coconut milk, and avocado and making just breakfast or lunch, you can now make a hair conditioner, as well.

Control:

Many of us, like me, do not read the ingredients of every single product because we don’t have the time or we are going off of a recommendation from social media, friends, and/or family.

We don’t read them all the time because sometimes there are so many, but when you use a diy hair mask, then there are probably about six ingredients, maybe more if you are using some oils.

Hair needs:

When I buy hair products from the store, I cannot address all of my hair needs. The one tub of the hair mask or the deep conditioner* may not contain shea butter*, boost volume, provide nourishment, and contain protein. But different fruits, vegetables, oils, and liquids do contain these qualities.

Convenience:

If my groceries are at my house then that means I do not have to transport myself to the nearest hair store to get hair products. That’s wonderful for me because I can look in my fridge and get some eggs, some fruit, yogurt, and some milk and make parfait, and I can also make a mean deep conditioner*.

Below I want to share with you one of my favorite masks that I use all the time for stronger hair. Here are the ingredients:

  1. Two Eggs
  2. Apple Cider Vinegar* (1/4 cup)
  3. Yogurt (1/16 cup)
  4. Coconut oil* (1/3 cup)
  5. Mixture of essential oils* (1 tsp)
  6. Whisk
  7. Microwave
  8. Processing cap

Eggs have protein and biotin which can aid in hair strength. The stronger your hair is, the better able it is to defend against breakage.

Apple cider vinegar* has antifungal and antibacterial properties. It can be used for clarifying and maintaining pH all while being a detangler for your hair. It is a wonderful asset to leave in and deep conditioner* because it reduces frizz, adds shine, and reduces the porosity of the hair. Also, apple cider vinegar* has been known to help in aid with hair growth because it stimulates hair follicles.

Yogurt has lactic acid which is good for providing a moisture and strength. Yogurt especially Greek yogurt also strengthens the hair strand without making it feel hard.

List of oils

  1. Tea Tree
  2. Black Castor Oil*
  3. Argan Oil
  4. Peppermint oil*
  5. Coconut oil*

What did I do:

I poured all of these things into a microwavable bowl and whisked the ingredients, but my coconut oil* was not liquid so I put it in the microwave for 2 minutes or until it is liquid.

*Warning: It will be really hot so do not put it on your scalp until it cools down for a bit.

When the mixture cooled down, I smoothed it into my hair from the ends to the roots and put on a processing cap. After thirty minutes, wash the mixture out with shampoo because your hair will smell like eggs and that is not cute.

Results:

After rinsing out my hair, my hair felt soft but strong. My curls were very defined and I loved the volume, although the hair is thinner when wet. I don’t really need any more volume since my hair is really thick, but I was happy to know that my hair did have a lot of it. My hair also was full of sheen and shiny, but not oily.

Ofcourse you can get as creative as you want with your own DIY mask the point is the more healthy natural ingredients we use to care for our hair the better our hair will respond.

If you are the girl who likes to keep things simple you can use one or two ingredients and mix them with some cheap conditioner and call it a day as well. Grow your hair out long and shiny with a diy hair mask, I promise you won’t regret it!
