Want More Volume? Ditch The Gel!

Yes, you read the title correctly. I recently discovered that skipping the gel during styling prep for my twist outs leads to more volume.

I know what you’re thinking, there’s no way I can get rid of my holy grail, my Eco styler*–or whatever gelatin gold you use and consider a staple. However, those with fine hair know the struggle of chasing that voluminous fro and having a love hate relationship with day one hair that has tons of flat definition.

The past couple of months I’ve been getting serious about finding tips and tricks that work for me so that I don’t have to wait until day 3 to get the fro I want and need in my life.

I’ve been using gel with my twist outs ever since the beginning of my natural journey. Why? Well because that’s what they say to use. The YouTubers, the OG naturals, and your cousin’s best friend’s auntie who all swear by it.

Yes, you’ll get awesome curl definition and redefine the lovely curl pattern you already have, but why should you accept the give and take of it all? Why settle for definition when you can have that plus a good full fro on day one?

Recently, out of mere laziness, I skipped the gel when trying a new product, Curls Blueberry Biss Twist n’ Shout cream. With the product promising definition and hold, I wanted to see how it worked for my hair alone.

To my surprise, both my dry and wet twist outs using solely just the product resulted in a defined fro full of life and lift.

I’ve tried a few additional cream-based styling products without the use of gel and obtained similar results.

With that being said it is clear that I have found something that works great for me. Omitting gel for my twist outs was definitely a game changer.

Are you struggling with getting a voluminous fro? If so, have you tried not using gel when styling?
