3 Tips On How To Find Your Product Staples

When I first started my natural hair journey I thought that I just had to try every natural hair care product I could get my hands on. I mean, it got so bad that I literally could not go into Target without coming out with a hair product, even if my sole purpose to go in was to get toilet tissue.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with buying new hair products. However, half of those products that I bought during those product junkie stages, I don’t even use.

I’ve tried them once or twice then realized that I didn’t even like them. That’s money down the drain! It wasn’t until last year I finally narrowed down the top products that work for me, and I only buy those products. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes I try new products, but I don’t buy them blindly. Here is how I finally found my product staples:

1. Product Swap

9 times out of 10, someone in your natural circle of curl friends has a product that she tried and hated! Just like when I had all those products that I bought and ended up not liking.

One thing I did was do a product swap with my friends. One night we had a girls night and all brought products we’ve tried and didn’t like, and then we just did a ‘gift exchange.’ That’s how I found one of my current staples.

2. Free Samples

Many times, if you go to your favorite hair site, they will usually have a link where you can sign up for their mailings, and also get free product samples. I know I’ve done it with Shea Moisture* before. I was able to get a sample size of products, and see what I liked and didn’t like before buying the full size.

3. Multiple Usage

I’ve been victim to trying a product once and then swearing off of it. I recently learned, that just because a product didn’t work once, doesn’t mean that it doesn’t work for me.

Now, I give a product at least 3 tries, before I make a verdict. What are some of the ways you’ve gone about finding your product staples?! Comment below!
