True Life: I Used To Religiously Follow Hair Idols And My Hair Styling Results Were Always A Disaste

Some people when they are newly natural find a hair idol which can mean that they spend their time, effort and money trying to get their hair to be like somebody else’s.

I was one of these people, I tried so many times to copy my hair idols using the same products they used following their step by step tutorials and techniques with disastrous results.

I remember at one time copying one YouTuber who put her hair in about 6-8 twists in the shower then applied and oil and then let it to air dry. Her twists were beautiful but when I did the same thing my twists were so dry and when I tried to separate them to create volume I literally destroyed them.

After another fail I decided to embrace the fact that there were so many things I did not know about my hair idol which could have affected my results

Curl Pattern

By this I mean whether they have tight, medium or loose curls. For me I have tight curls or coils so, my results will never be the same to a hair idol with a looser or a wavy curl pattern.

Volume of Hair

Some people have naturally very thick hair. For instance, my eldest daughter does have thick voluminous hair whereas I have fine hair. I can create 6-9 twists on her wet hair and then once dry separate them to reveal and awesome voluminous twist out.

However, this does not work for me. I must twist my hair while dry to create that illusion of volume instead of when it is wet which will cause serious shrinkage.

Length of Hair

I had a hair idol with longer hair while I had medium length hair which means that her hair or twists seem to automatically cascade downwards and mine would stick up every time I tried her styles. At that time I had no idea why but now I know better.

Longer hair has more weight which forces the strands to lie down and since my hair was much shorter there was no way I would have the same results. Now that my hair is longer when I twist my hair I am just now achieving the same weighted results.

Moral of the story, use hair inspiration for just that, “inspiration”! Do not expect ‘her’ results but expect ‘your’ results with similar techniques.
