London News Paper Rips Solange’s Image To Sell A Story And Social Media Isn’t Ha

solange-leadBefore I get into the usual crying about appropriation I am reminded of that song Solange did on her amazing album A Seat At The Table called F.U.B.U For obvious reasons I cannot play the song here but click this link if you have never heard the song before.

Solange says a lot in that song but the one line I will reiterate here is “Some Sh&t Is For Us” because it is in that line where the emotion we feel comes from when we first see that image.

When I saw the image first posted on The Shade Room that was apparently posted in a London News Paper that’s exactly what I thought. Solange said spoke about this very scenario in so many ways on her Album using her own image which has been copied dozens of times specifically amongst black women on social media who identified with it.

With that said there is another perspective we can take and that is to consider that the picture really isn’t that big of a deal. In other words do not have a cow (maybe just have a small chicken instead) because at the end of the day for that paper and that audience it’s just a girl with pins in her hair.

They say imitation is the best form of flattery! Am I flattered? Not really, and neither were any of these commenters who shared their opinion on social media after viewing the picture:

MADD wack!

draciaj_ – This is clearly a copy cat effort but imitation is the highest form of flattery so id take it as a complimemt

We can never have anything. They just take take take. Bruh let us live!!!! Let us live!

There were many others who said that we get mad over every little thing and to be frank I do not think ‘we’ get mad over every little thing, I don’t even think anybody is really mad.

After all, this too shall pass, that image just certifies that what we do, what Solange did was pretty darn epic and to recreate it based on the power that that image now carries in it only adds further credibility to the art. My response, take it as a compliment, look at the image, smile and move on!
