I Tried The Baking Soda Shampoo For My Itchy Scalp And Here Is What Happened

I started to hear talk about this new method for washing hair a little while ago and at first, I was very hesitant to try the technique but decided to take the plunge. Since starting it I have seen what it has done for my hair as far as length retention, itchiness, shine and cleanliness and I can without a doubt say that it works.

Women have been used in baking for years for all sorts of things including cleaning the home and keeping teeth healthy. But if you frequent hair blogs you will notice that women find it useful as a hair cleanser. After watching a video on Youtube, I decided to try the method for myself.

Why I started washing with baking soda

The reason was very simple, my scalp was itching badly and I needed a solution. I knew it was time to wash my hair and believe me, I was skeptical but the itching was so bad I figured I had nothing to lose.

What you will need?

  1. An Applicator bottle*
  2. Water
  3. Baking soda

What you need to do:

In an applicator bottle*, mix baking soda and water in a ratio 1:3. Adjust the quantity according to the length of your hair, so if you have a long hair, mix 3 tablespoons of baking soda with 9 tablespoons of water. Apply the mix on dry or wet hair directly to the scalp and leave it on your hair for 1-3 minutes. Rinse thoroughly then deep condition as normal.

What were my results:

The first noticeable change was that the itchiness on my scalp completely stopped which was what I really hoped would happen after trying it. When I rinsed out my hair, I also noticed that there was no hair that I needed to clean up in the shower.

That was a huge plus for me because it means that in the long-term it would reduce my hair fall which is probably why people say it helps your hair to grow.

I don’t think that it helps your hair grow I just think it is great for scalp health and reducing hair loss. My hair was easier to manipulate and de-tangle because my fingers were able to de-tangle my hair fully with just my leave in conditioner* in my hair.

With that said I plan to add the baking soda shampooing technique to my regimen because clarifying my hair is very important for maintaining my scalp and keeping the itchiness at bay.

Final thoughts

Overall I think that this process of washing hair is great, I loved the way my hair felt and I love how shiny it was after trying it the first time.

If you are having scalp issues, I would definitely recommend giving it a try and if you do that, watch this video first:
