Black Hair Holiday Survival Guide

Christmas is almost upon us now. If you were lucky enough to get in on the 75% off clearance on hair products at CVS you should be sitting pretty right now and gearing up to slay the heck out of your holiday hair. Oh, I envy you cause some of us don’t have CVS here and international shipping is an arm and a leg, but slay for us :-).

Most of you probably feel unprepared doing the last minute dashes to the shops for gifts or contemplating what to wear for that party in 2 weeks. Either way, this is by far the busiest time of the year so how do you factor your hair care into it? You wouldn’t want to neglect your hair at this most crucial time when the weather is cold and dry and your locks can suffer and set you back months. No doubt, your hair will be in need of some TLC this season!

If time is an issue which is very likely with the school break looming and the tons of shopping you still have remaining to do, it’s time for an action plan. Do you want to look drop dead gorgeous for the office Christmas party and get through the holidays with a beautiful mane all the while making it look effortless?

Here’s are the top 8 tips to guide you through the holidays.

Tip #1

First, you will need the all-important invisible forcefield that comes with fierce confidence, positive attitude and a healthy dose of clap back game to go with it. This will be needed to ward off the negativity that is known to be in full swing at this time of year.

You would think that by now most people would come to the realization that natural hair is fabulous but not everyone, agrees. And with families bein flung together again for the holiday period, you will have some family members who get off on spewing some mess about someone else’s hair.

Sadly, there is always that one whose ready with the put-down and if you are not prepared, particularly if you are a newbie or hate criticism, you may be blindsided with the comments when they come for you. It could also make you second guess yourself and do something that harms your mane. Don’t let that happen.

Tip #2

If you haven’t done so yet, you need to up your deep conditioning* game. The foundation of a bomb style lies in the moisture of your hair particularly in this dry time with temperatures that can take a toll on your hair. Don’t use the holidays as an excuse to skimp on this the most important aspect of hair care.

Tip #3

‘Tis the season to be jolly but ‘tis also the season for weaves* and braids! Protective style installs are a lifesaver at this time of year. Not only are you protecting your precious strands from the elements, you can continue to look fabulous. Your wash and conditioning routine should not change but you will find that your styling time will be cut drastically.

Tip #4

Conditioner on dry hair – Ditch the shampoo and up your co-washes. Slather your dry hair in a creamy conditioner when you get back from a hard day’s work. Cover with a plastic cap while running yourself a hot bath. Soak yourself for a well deserved ½ hour then rinse the conditioner off. A double treat for your locks and body!

Tip #5

Try an ultra quick morning co-wash – If you have braids or hair that agrees with wash and gos then this is ideal for you. Loosen some conditioner with double the amount of water and stream through your hair while working it into the scalp. Leave it in your hair while you have your shower rinse it off once you are done. Allow your hair to air dry as you go about your day or use a diffuser* to dry your hair while you dress. It will save you tons of time and you will have that smug sense of satisfaction that your hair is super moisturized!

Tip #6

Not only do hats and scarves look great with your outfit, they protect your tresses from the elements too! Get accessorizing!

Tip #7

Texture is suddenly all the rage. It’s no wonder that a quick and easy braid out or twist out is the styling weapon of choice this season. Whether your mane is relaxed or natural a braid out or twist out is easy and looks great.

Tip #8

In the event that you are not so much into weaves* and wigs* but have no problem with stretching your mane with a bit of heat, get a silk press. With the wide variety of anti-reversion products on the market, you should be covered. It would give you time to do more of the things you love ( more quality time spent with loved ones comes to mind) since you wouldn’t be trying to re-twist your hair at night or to refresh your curls every morning.

Whatever you are doing this December whether you are staying home with family and friends or jetting off somewhere exotic, use this survival guide to make your holiday hair care a breeze. Have a great Christmas and look forward to another year and another 6 inches of hair!
