Choosing The Right Hairstyle And Glasses For Your Face Shape

Are you in the market for a new hairstyle or glasses? Before you even consider changing anything you should figure out the shape of your face and what styles or glasses shapes will compliment you.

THE ROUND FACE

Round face shapeThis face is  full with a rounded hairline and chin area. The area around the cheeks will be the widest point. If your face is round, your purpose should be to try to lengthen it. You can achieve this by adding height and fullness at the crown and layering will also help massively with this. An off centre part is best with the rest of the hair staying close to the side of the head to avoid adding even more fullness.

Hair Length: If you wear a shorter cut hair should be swept back but a longer cut worn the same way will also work. Avoid hair that’s chin length with rounded lines, like bobs. This just makes your head appear rounder! Also avoid straight blunt bangs and short crops. A centre part will tend to accentuate the roundness of your face so steer clear!

Glasses: Choose rectangular frames as they will contrast the round face, making it appear thinner and longer. If your eyes are close-set, choose clear bridges as they make eyes appear further apart. Colored temples are ok too.

THE SQUARE FACE

Square face shapeThis face shape has a strong, square jaw line and a square hairline too. If you have a square face your goal is to soften it. Hair with a multitude of waves and curls will go a long way to achieving this. Dead straight hair is not a good idea but layers and wispy bangs will be fine. Off centre parts and height at the crown will help to elongate the face adding to the softness.

Hair Length: Short to medium length hair works best for this shape face. Make sure that your cut ends just above or a slightly below your chin, a style that ends directly at chin length will emphasize your square jaw. Avoid centre parts like the plague!

Glasses: Look for frames where the lower part is curved with some weight on top as well. Centred temples are desirable. Look for a frame wider than the widest part of the face. This will soften the angular appearance of your square face. Stay away from rectangular frames.

THE OVAL FACE

Oval face shapeAn oval shape is the most balanced shape with a gently rounded hairline and is only slightly narrower at the jaw than at the temples. Most hairstyles will in fact look great on an oval face so don’t hide your features! Slicked back and even severe styles will look fabulous on you.

Hair Length: Most styles will suit you so go crazy!

Glasses: Get frames that maintain the natural balance of your face. You are open to whichever shape you like but avoid frames with low temples as they will detract from your face’s natural features and balance.

THE DIAMOND FACE

Diamond face shapeWith this face shape you will find that the widest point is at the cheekbones while being equally narrow at the jaw line & forehead. The features are also very balanced so you will have many options of styles. Short styles should have weight towards the nape area to balance high cheekbones and a small chin.

Hair Length: Most lengths will suit you so don’t hide your facial features with your hair!

Glasses: Select frames that accentuate the forehead and jaw while drawing attention away from the temple. Rimless or frames with decorated tops are fine. Geometric and oval shapes will minimize the distance between your temples.

THE OBLONG FACE

Oblong face shapeThis is a long slender face with the distance at various areas of the face being quite similar. You may also have a narrow chin or high forehead. What you want is to give your face the appearance of fullness. Layers will help give you the fullness you need at the sides while softening the lines of your face. Wispy bangs and off centre bangs reduce length and will look great on you.

Hair Length: Short to medium lengths will look the best. Longer lengths should be pulled back to avoid accentuating the length of your face. Avoid long lengths worn in a centre part!

Glasses: Frames with equal top to bottom width with contrasting temples are best. You certainly don’t want frames with lots of weight  either at the top or bottom. Round or square frames will look good on you.

THE TRIANGULAR FACE

Triangle face shapeInverted triangle face shapeThis could either be a triangular shape with a dominant jaw line that narrows at the cheekbones and temples or a inverted triangle with the fullness at the forehead with narrower chin. For the triangular face choose styles that are fuller at the temples and taper at the jaw area. Lots of layers or a choppy cut will help. This style will help to balance your prominent jaw. With the inverted triangular shape the reverse is true. Keep longer layers with the weight near your chin and neck to balance your narrow chin.

Hair Length: Shorter hair works best with the triangular face to help balance the prominent jaw line. If wearing long hair, make sure it’s pulled back at the nape. For the inverted triangle face, keep the lengths mid to long but maintain layers and volume just below the chin.

Glasses: Use top heavy frames for the triangular face and bottom heavy ones for the inverted triangle. You want to draw attention away from your prominent feature.

THE HEART-SHAPED FACE

Heart shape faceThis face will be widest at the hairline and temples and narrows to a small chin and you will often have a widow’s peak.Chin length styles will look great on you as they create fullness where you need it creating balance. Stick with wispy bangs and off center parts while keeping layers forward towards your face. If you are lucky enough to have dramatic high cheekbones, keep nape length layers to add weight and balance your features.

Hair Length: Chin length hair will look great on you but if  you want longer hair, then cut in chin length layers. Avoid short styles, height at the crown or severe looks because they accentuate the upper face!

Glasses: Choose frames with low temples and light colored rims. You could also try frames that are bottom heavy to balance your face.

With these tips it should be easy to pick your new hairstyle or sunglasses for the summer. Don’t feel closed in by your face shape, remember, as long as you do not draw attention to your prominent features we are all open to different lengths and styles so have fun with your choices!
