5 Unique Pre-Poo Recipes To Spice Up Your Hair Regimen

5 Unique Pre-Poo Recipes To Spice Up Your Hair Regimen

I don’t know about you but I think the best thing about wash day for me, has to be the pre-poo, I take pride in my pre poo mixtures partly because I am a self titled ‘ultimate kitchenista’ and I love the fact that I can get some sort of deep conditioning* in prior to my shampoo and not have to worry about dry straw like hair once I finally get out of the shower.

In case you don’t know what a pre-poo is, it’s simply an treatment that you apply on your hair just before you shampoo to prevent your hair from drying out too much. This is especially important if you use sulfate containing shampoos regularly. Pre-poo recipes vary from the simple to the exotic and even the downright weird!

If you are relaxed or natural and already love pre-pooing or you are just getting introduced to the process here are a few fun recipes you ought to give a whirl.

1. Olive Oil*, Honey*, Conditioner and Eggs Pre-poo

I would not do justice to this post without including this simple, no nonsense recipe. This one can be considered your go to recipe if you need a dash of protein with a side of moisture.

In a bowl mix one or two eggs, a table spoon of honey*, two table spoons of olive oil* and enough conditioner to keep the mixture easy to spread. If you have fine hair or hair prone to breakage, a little protein weekly will do nothing but good for your strands.

The honey, oil and conditioner are your moisture agents which balances out the recipe and makes this a very good all round pre-poo. A note on the conditioner, you dont have to get fancy, cheap ones like V05 or even Suave are perfect, you just need something moisture based.

2. Avocado, Coconut Oil*, Vodka, Mayo And Honey* Pre-poo

Before you say anything, a perfect substitute for Vodka is apple cider vinegar*, because we all know there are a thousand other uses for Smirnoff and most of them do not involve hair.

Vodka along with avocado and mayo is the perfect mix for shiny hair so if you decide to go for the alcohol, add 1 shot to a blender*, half an avocado, one table spoon of mayo, two table spoons of honey* and two tablespoons of coconut oil. Mix well and apply it to your hair.

After about thirty minutes, shampoo and condition as normal. Now as mentioned before ACV can be used in place of Vodka as both remove buildup and brighten the hair (its just not as fun).

3. Shea butter*, Mango Butter, Honey* And Olive Oil* Pre-poo

Prepoo shea butter mango butter honey & olive oil

For this recipe you can melt all your hard butters* shea and mango butter in a double boiler or if you do not have one just melt everything in a microwave oven. For each ingredient you will need two tablespoons or a touch more for longer thicker hair.

Apply the mixture to your hair and cover with a plastic bag and a towel to hold in the heat. If you want to get real fancy add some tingle with a few drops of peppermint oil, everything is better with peppermint*.

This is a great hot oil treatment, it smells great and the oils* coat the hair protecting it from any stripping agents found in your shampoo.

4. Greek Yogurt Pre-poo

Prepoo plain greek yogurt

There is no avoiding this one, the benefits of Greek yogurt are undeniable. Because this is only one ingredient it might not sound as fun as the others, but when you are done that’s when the fun begins.

Get some plain Greek yogurt, section your hair and apply the yogurt to your dry or damp hair, this pre poo will save your strands for days after application. Shine and strength from the protein, ease in detangling, soft hair, shiny hair, the list could go on.

So yes, the recipe is a bit plain but put some Chobani or Fage on chill and give it a try. If you must add something, olive oil* or honey* are great additives.

5. Banana, Yogurt, Honey*, Wheat germ oil* And Condensed Milk Pre-poo

If you know anything about bananas, its that they never miss a great party so we would be remisce if we did not include a pre-poo recipe with them.

You will need one medium to large banana or banana baby food is a great substitute if you have some, four table spoons honey*, 3 tablespoons yogurt preferably full fat, 3 tablespoons condensed milk and 2 tablespoons wheat germ oil*.

Do not under any circumstances use a spoon to mix, blend everything in a blender* until the mix is completely smooth or you will have annoying chunks of banana in your hair that will ruin a perfect spa day.

A note on some of the ingredients, you may look at condensed milk as something to turn your nose up at because who would really want condensed milk in there hair? But condensed milk is a great conditioner and any milk really adds moisture and shine to the hair.

Wheat germ oil is also interesting, it is known for its vitamins* especially in the B family which increases circulation to the scalp and can thicken hair, not to mention it’s abundance of ceramides which will pave over cracks in your cuticles making your hair smoother.
