7 Real Benefits Of Having Fine Natural Hair

Beautiful Mixed Race African American Girl With Perfect SmileI am the last person you should ask about the benefits of fine hair, I am usually the one complaining with the ‘woes me’ tales of all the tangles and frustration of my hair.

But in truth my hair is pretty cool and really the only thing that needs fixing is my attitude about it. My new thing is, when I find something to complain about I must follow up with something positive about my hair and in practicing that I have discovered that fine hair isn’t so bad after all.

There are some real benefits to having thinner strands and you soon discover that the grass is actually green on this side of the fence so in the spirit of all things positive here are 7 benefits to having fine natural hair.

1. You Get Decent ‘Hang-Time’ Even When Your Hair Is Shorter

Everyone likes a little hang time every now and then and when your hair is short you may find that your hair defies gravity and wants to grow upwards instead of downwards. If your hair is fine adding products can act not only as moisturizers and styling agents but like weights that will allow for some serious hang time if done right.

For example if you have natural hair and you primarily do wash and goes on your short tresses, try flipping your hair forward as you rinse and apply product. Once your hair dries you will have the cutest hanging bangs the world is yet to see. All that just by following a simple technique and having responsive fine hair!

2. You Use Way Less Product

The thing about fine hair is that because of the lightness of the strands, they tend to get drenched faster and as a result you wind up using way less product than our coarser haired naturalistas.

Truthfully, using too much product weighs the hair down anyway leaving it greasy and icky looking so most fine haired women tend to go easy on product to get the desired effect.

Less product means that you are not running to the store every second week to re-up, saving serious dollars. When the label says ‘A dime size amount’, fine haired ladies can usually take that very literally and be just fine (forgive the pun)!

3. You have no trouble feeling your scalp even when your hair is shrunken

Oh the joys of an accessible scalp! Even though your hair may not appear ‘scalpy’ sometimes it might feel that way because it is so easy for you to get your fingers into your scalp.

Thicker haired naturals might have felt a little overwhelmed when they first began transitioning but not you, you took to natural hair like a duck to water!

And you have to admit it does feel good to not have to have to get a 2 by 4 piece of plywood to scratch that itch that won’t quit.

fine hair4. Your Hair Stretches Easily

Fine hair really does not need that much manipulation to be elongated because the density of the strands allows for ease when stretching. You may find that sometimes fine haired ladies end up overstretching their hair when employing typical elongation techniques like pinning up twists which may leave us with limp looking twist outs.

This may not be such a bad thing though because as it goes hand in hand with ‘hang time’ and you are able to enjoy your length a whole lot easier without having to use heat.

5. Responds Well To Slip

Even though fine hair can tangle easily, and it does, it detangles relatively easily too under the right conditions. If you have fine hair, the best way to handle it would be with your ten fingers, under a shower stream with loads of slippy conditioner. For some reason there is no match for the shower stream when detangling fine hair with the knots and snarls literally melting away!

6. Your Hair Tends To Have That “Wind Blown” Effect

This is one of the best benefits of fine hair. Fine hair has a wind blown effect because it is so light and airy. When it is longer the benefits are even more pronounced with the hair falling perfectly back in place once the wind calms down (I can’t promise the same for shorter hair!).

It’s always best to avoid adding too much product, just to let the hair ‘do what it do’ and you will get that ‘gone with the wind fabulous’ feeling, literally!

7. Your Edges Lay Down Easily

If you are black then you have some edges that probably need some laying. Fine hair responds very quickly to edge control products or just a little shea butter*.

There is no need for harsh gels or anything that has a hard hold to lay the edges down, nor as stated before do you need much in order to get your edges looking right.

If you have fine hair what other benefits can you think of?
